A big thank you to everyone who has already contacted us and signed up for the Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt and/or Scarecrow Decorating Contest. If you didn’t get a chance to check out Tuesday’s e-blast, below is the information about the Fall Festival and how you can participate: In an effort to increase traffic to Custer on the Saturday after the Buffalo Roundup, the Custer Chamber is planning a Fall Festival for that day. We would like to invite Custer businesses, organizations, groups, committees, individuals, etc to join us in planning fall-themed events/activities. The Chamber is working with the Farmer’s Market and has invited various arts and crafts vendors to come to Way Park that day for a small Arts & Crafts Festival. We’ll also have a booth there and have some fall games set up for the kiddos…like pumpkin bowling, pumpkin tic-tac-toe, etc. The first few years of Custer Restaurant Week we had a Sip ‘n’ Paint class, and we’ve invited her to come to Custer the day of the Fall Festival this year. We haven’t chosen the specific picture yet, but we know it will be fall- themed. We’re also in the early stages of organizing a Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt and a Scarecrow Decorating Contest.

Badlands National Park – North Unit Environmental Assessment U.S. Department of the Interior National Park Service Badlands National Park, North Unit Pennington and Jackson Counties, South Dakota Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Management Plan Environmental Assessment August 2007 Badlands National Park – North Unit Environmental Assessment National Park Service Prairie Dog Management Plan U.S. Department of the Interior National Park Service Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Management Plan Environmental Assessment Badlands National Park, North Unit Pennington and Jackson Counties, South Dakota Executive Summary The U.S. Department of Interior, National Park Service (NPS) proposes to implement a comprehensive black-tailed prairie dog management plan for the North Unit of Badlands National Park where prairie dog populations have increased from approximately 2,070 acres in 1979 to 6,363 acres in 2006, or 11% of the approximately 60,000 acres of available suitable habitat. The principal objectives of the management plan are to ensure that the black-tailed prairie dog is maintained in its role as a keystone species in the mixed-grass prairie ecosystem on the North Unit, while providing strategies to effectively manage instances of prairie dog encroachment onto adjacent private lands. The plan also seeks to manage the North Unit’s prairie dog populations to sustain numbers sufficient to survive unpredictable events that may cause high mortality, such as sylvatic plague, while at the same time allowing park managers to meet management goals for other North Unit resources. Primary considerations in developing the plan include conservation of the park’s natural processes and conditions, identification of effective tools for prairie dog management, implementing strategies to deal with prairie dog encroachment onto adjacent private lands, and protection of human health and safety.

O’Harra Collection: Glass Lantern Slides and Glass Plate Negatives Extent 1509 items: 1227 glass lantern slides, 282 glass plate negatives; 1358 unique images Scope and Content The C.C. O’Harra Collection consists of papers, publications, photographs, maps, and files of South Dakota School of Mines president and professor Cleophus Cisney O’Harra. The Devereaux Library’s glass lantern, sometimes referred to as magic lantern, collection consists of over 1200—3 ¼“ x 4” numbered slides and vary in subject matter from geology to meteorology to campus history and include photographs, drawings and maps of international, regional and historical interest. The glass plate negatives consist of 282 plates. The plates are of two size formats—4” x 5” and 5” x 7”, and have an unprotected photo emulsion on the back side. The purpose of the items was primarily instructional. They were produced either from a stationary camera, as shown in the photo or “on site” from a more portable unit. Glass plates were the first step in the reproduction process and, as is evidenced by the notations in the margins of many of the originals, were later submitted to a commercial photo processor to be made into glass slides Provenance The glass lantern slides and glass plate negatives have been a part of the university‘s holdings for several decades.

Here are some of the summer activities that the Chamber staff did these last few months. Dolsee Davenport Executive Director Dawn - I participated in the Custer State Park Trail Challenge again this year by taking a different [email protected] trail each weekend. I love getting out in the beautiful Black Hills and enjoying the peace and Dawn Murray tranquility after a busy week at the office.
