Taylor, Chair A stark mobility divide separates American households with and without cars. While households with cars move easily across space, households without cars face limited access to opportunities. But no longer. Ridehail companies such as Uber and Lyft divorce car access from ownership, revolutionizing auto-mobility as we know it. Despite its high-tech luster, we do not yet know how ridehailing serves different neighborhoods and travelers, and who, if anyone, is left behind. The closest historical analog to new ridehail services is the taxi industry, which has a history of discrimination, particularly against black riders and neighborhoods. Ridehail services may discriminate less than taxis and extend reliable car access to neighborhoods underserved by taxis. Or they may not. In this study, I pose and answer three questions about ridehail access and equity in Los Angeles. First, what explains the geographical distribution of ridehail trips across neighborhoods? Second, what explains ridehail use by individuals? Finally, is there evidence of racial or gender discrimination on ridehail and taxi services? To answer these questions, I relied on two novel data sets. First, I used trip-level data to evaluate ridehail travel in neighborhoods and by individuals. Second, I conducted an audit study of ridehail and taxi services to evaluate if and how wait times and ride request cancellation rates vary by rider race, ethnicity, or gender. ii I find that ridehailing extends reliable car access to travelers and neighborhoods previously marginalized by the taxi industry. Ridehailing served neighborhoods home to 99.8 percent of the Los Angeles County population. Strong associations between ridehail use and neighborhood household vehicle ownership suggests that ridehailing provides auto-mobility in neighborhoods where many lack reliable access to cars. For most users, ridehailing filled an occasional rather than regular travel need, and a small share of avid users made the majority of ridehail trips. While hailing shared rides was common in low-income neighborhoods, I also find that people shared less if they lived in racial or ethnically diverse neighborhoods. Finally, audit data reveal high levels of discrimination against black riders by taxi drivers. Black riders were 73 percent more likely than white riders to have a taxi trip cancelled and waited between six and 15 minutes longer than white riders, all else equal. By contrast, ridehail services nearly eliminate the racial-ethnic differences in service quality. Policy and platform- level strategies can erase the remaining mobility gap and ensure equitable access to ridehailing and future technology-enabled mobility services. iii The dissertation of Anne Elizabeth Brown is approved. Jasbo Brown is playing the blues on the piano as people dance. Clara sings a lullaby (“Summertime”) to her baby while streetwise Sportin’ Life, Clara’s husband Jake, Mingo, Robbins, and some of the other men are gambling. Porgy, who is dis- abled, enters. The game gets heated as tensions rise a shopkeeper between losers and winners. Maria- (contralto) The big bully, Crown, kills Robbins, leaving his girl- friend, Bess, behind. Sportin’ Porgy- a disabled beggar (bass-baritone) Life then asks Bess to go to New York with him, but she refuses. Helpless, Bess looks for a safe place to hide, but the religious women of Catfish Row close their doors to her. Only Porgy will give her shelter when the police arrive. The community raises money for Robbins’ funeral. Local resident Peter is arrested for killing Robbins. The undertaker con- soles Robbins’ wife, Serena, by promising to give Robbins a decent burial. And Bess’ by Todd O'Dowd The Gershwin’s Porgy And Bess: The Broadway Musical might be a mouthful to say, but can easily summed up in three words; it’s a hit! Before I get into all of the details about my somewhat conflicted feelings about this production, (which is playing now till Sunday, March 30 at The Ordway in St. Paul). I’m going to cut to the chase: Get to The Ordway now and see this show! If this is your first time seeing this piece, you will be in great hands thanks to a lovely cast and a great staging. More to the point it’s a great introduction to one of the most canonical works in American Musical Theatre and American Opera. In fact I will go one step further; I hope young people see this production and are inspired by it to go into theater and/or opera. It’s that vital of a production. Okay, now that I’ve gotten the important part out of the way, I’ll highlight the big issue that a lot of people (including to a small degree, myself) have had with it. If you can accept the fact that this is an opera that has been adapted for the conventions of musical theater and for voices more at ease on a Broadway stage than an opera house, then you’re going to be just fine.

The Peabody Conservatory, however, remained segregated for nearly a century after its founding in 1857, despite Baltimore’s large and growing African-American population. It boasted of an international student body from countries all over the world, but would not admit African-American students who lived just miles away. This raises important questions about the effect of The Peabody Institute’s past racist policies on the music community in Baltimore, the environment at Peabody for the first generation of African-American students who enrolled, and what all of this means for Peabody going forward.

PORGY AND BESS: A RACIAL PARADOX Carolyn Deemer Bachelor of the Arts Senior Project Dr. Taylor Ferranti Dr. Sandra Yang Cedarville University, April 26, 2010 1 ABSTRACT This project examines the racial implications of George Gershwin‟s folk opera Porgy and Bess. This study specifically addresses the question: Did Porgy and Bess have a positive or negative impact on race relations between the African-American and white communities? To answer that question, this I have examined the perceptions that various groups expressed upon viewing the opera. In my research, I have studied the responses from black and white society in the United States, as well as the intentions of Gershwin himself. I discuss these responses in terms of the opera‟s immediate reception, through primary source documents, newspaper articles, and letters.     “Porgy and Bess”—“Original” Cast Recording (1940; 1942) Added to the National Registry: 2003 Essay by Daniel Langan (guest post)* George Gerswhin Original label Original album cover The Registry selection of the Decca original cast recording of “Porgy and Bess” honors an album that was made five years after the American Folk Opera had its New York premiere on October 10, 1935, a time lapse that was a breeze compared with the nine years it took from George Gershwin’s first reading of DuBose Heyward’s novel, “Porgy,” until their “Porgy and Bess” opened at Manhattan’s Alvin Theater (now the Neil Simon Theater) where it was reviewed by both theatre and music critics, the latter group’s judgments ranging from generally negative to downright hostile. Four days after its Broadway premiere, the first “Porgy” recording session began at RCA Studio #1 in Manhattan. It was “recorded under the supervision of the composer” and featured the production’s conductor, Alexander Smallens, the pit orchestra musicians and the Eva Jessye Choir, all of whom were performing in “Porgy” every night at the Alvin. What prevented the RCA recordings from constituting the first-ever original Broadway cast album was the casting of white Metropolitan Opera singers Lawrence Tibbett as Porgy and Helen Jepson as Bess instead of the black Todd Duncan and Anne Brown who performed the title roles on stage. The presence of Tibbett on the records is somewhat ironic: when George Gershwin finally convinced the reluctant Duncan to take on the role of Porgy he made a note that Duncan was “the closest to a colored Tibbett I have ever heard.” “Porgy” had a Broadway run of just 124 performances, followed by a tour of select major cities that ended at the National Theater in Washington D.C.
