The depot was heavily used for railroad passengers, but the demand for rail service around the nation and in Greeley declined, especially after World War II, due to an increase in air travel and automobile use. After closing its doors in 1983, the depot stood vacant for eight years. It was then purchased by the City of Greeley, placed on the National Register of Historic Places and leased to the Chamber of Commerce. Renovation began in 1996 with Howard Johnson as the architect heading up the project. Lockhart and Growling Bear Constructors remodeled the building, staying true to its design and preserving much of the depot’s original interior beauty. The depot still boasts the original oak drawers and cabinets as well as the Chamber offices, 902 7th Avenue wrought-iron ticket counter.
