P ARSHA I N SI G H T Yitzchok expired and died… his sons, Esav and Yakov, buried him. (35:29)

Chazal (Bava Basra 16b) note that there is difference between the words the Torah uses in describing Yitzchok and Yishmoel’s burial of Avrohom, and the words used to depict Yakov and Esav’s burial of Yitzchok. Yitzchok is listed first when the Torah writes that he and Yishmoel buried Avrohom, implying that Yishmoel recognized Yitzchok preeminence. However, when Yakov and Esav buried Yitzchok, Esav is listed first, because he still believed in his being superior to Yakov. Chazal (ibid) s ay that this teaches us that Esav did not do teshuva and therefore remained with the title of ‘rosho.’ Why does Esav’s belief in his supremacy over Yakov prove he was a rosho -- Maybe he followed all the mitzvos but believed he was supreme over Yakov? And Dina went out. (34:1)

Without asking her father’s advice. (Ibn Ezra) The Ibn Ezra is explaining that the cause for ’s encounter with was she did not seek the advice of Torah. When a person has to make a decision, advice from a Torah personali ty must be sought. Had Dinah asked her father, he would have advised her on the proper course she should take, and she would have been spared much aggravation and humiliation.

This concept answers why Esav’s egotistical attitude retained for him the title of rosho. Due to his cavalier view of himself, Esav did not seek Torah counsel. Without Torah advice, one will always fall into wicked activity, with the result being an eternal title of ‘rosho.’

A GLIMPSE OF GREATNESS Yakov became very frightened… so he divided the people with him… into two camps. (32:8)

As World War I progressed, the front lines were closing in on Radin. As refugees escaped from their destroyed cities, they entered Radin and described the chaos and havoc they were experiencing.

One day, the b ochurim heard explosions from cannons and saw smoke emanating from the battle field. Knowing time was running out, they went to the Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Hirsh Levinson. He told them, “I do not know what to do, so let us do the gorol haGra.” With a tefilla to Hashem, the gorol was done, and the Tanach opened to the posuk “Yakov became very frightened… so he divided the people with him… into two camps”. The answer was obvious - they should divide the Yeshiva into two groups which would make it easier for them to escape. With these results, the Rosh Yeshiva and the bochurim came to receive approval from the Chofetz Chaim. As soon as the Chofetz Chaim saw them approaching, he said, “I know why you are coming - I also hear the cannons and see the smoke. I was tor n as what to do, so I was contemplating doing a gorol haGra. I then remembered the following words of Rav Chaim Voloziner (Ruach Chaim 6, 9) - whenever a person finds himself in a difficult situation, he should follow the advice of the Torah because every answer is in the Torah. A person who does this, will never fail.” “So why do I need to do the gorol? The answer is clear in the Torah, as the posuk says, Yakov became very frightened… so he divided the people with him… into two camps . It is obvious - we should divide into two camps.”
