7 SCHOOL It has been a very busy end to the summer term here at school with many different activities. We have been focusing on health and well-being, which culminated in our sports week where the children had the opportunity to try a variety of activities including caving (mobile cave), orienteering, forest schools, martial arts and yoga. We continue to be passionate about providing children with opportunities to try out alternative sports and to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The activities were thoroughly enjoyed by all the children. We also had a fabulous sports day where the KS1 children competed in station activities, followed by a whole school family picnic with races for KS1/2 in the afternoon.

Our Year 6 football team has had great success, winning the small schools competition 4-0 in a final at Kings Meadow School against Chesterton.

Once again our summer fete, organised by our FoFS committee, was a huge success with traditional stalls, music, BBQ and an inflatable obstacle course proving to be a very popular activity. A staggering

£2000 was raised.

Our school year drew to a close with a great production by the upper school of ‘Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits’. Their performance was met with a rousing standing ovation for the cast who have put in a lot of effort with their acting, singing and dancing. A huge thank you must go to our staff.

We wish all our Year 6 children who are moving on all the best in their next chapter. If you know anyone who would like to visit or find out more about what we offer, please pass on details of the school office (01869 345283) where our staff will make an appointment for me to meet and discuss their children’s very special educational journey. 12 CHURCH NEWS

Farewell to Cherwell Valley

For both Hope and I, we would like to thank the Parishes of the Benefice for a very memorable and worthwhile time with you all. It will be five years since we arrived at , on a dark September evening, to begin our House-for-Duty ministry. It will be on a light September morning when we will now be leaving! Our Farewell service will be on 29th September at 11am, followed by a Bring and Share lunch, to which all are welcome at St. Mary’s Lower Heyford. There are many good memories to take with us to Gloucestershire, where we have bought a lovely small home in Fairford. The reason for Fairford is not only because the Parish Church and town centre are close at hand, but also as we will be living only four miles from Harnhill Centre of Christian Healing. Hope and I have been visiting this delightful Retreat Centre, and we have already been accepted as volunteers to help pray for the guests who come. It was a real joy to work with Stephen & Cally, building together a Christian ministry, and working as a team with Barbara and David. Barbara is a wonderful Church Administrator, kind, capable and caring. David has been a real asset, especially at Heyford Park. I must add what marvellous Church Wardens I have been privileged to share the Gos- pel with. Good Church Wardens are the salt of the earth! The more I experience life, the more I come to acknowledge God’s love and forgiveness, and also His stupendous creation. It is Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the Christian writer and poet, who was given real insight into living a full life. In one of her works she writes: “Crowded with heaven and every common bush alive with God, but only he who sees, takes off his shoes; the rest sit around and pick blackberries.” It would be easy to sit back and enjoy our country’s Christian heritage and be passive observers of all that Christianity means to us. Nevertheless, there is work to do and there is nothing more worthwhile than to be engaged in the Kingdom of God, taking off our shoes of pride and acknowledging that this life is vital. Sitting around (and however de- lightful it is to pick blackberries!) will not bring us fulfilment in life. Pleasure, leisure and treasure are the primary goals of many today, but thank God we can go much deeper into life by having a relationship with our Creator through Je- sus Christ. Hope and I have so much valued our morning time with God. What has kept us going is that each morning we have given ourselves to our Lord in prayer, so to give us peace, vision and strength. There is no better way to begin the day than with Jesus, knowing that we are never alone, in all the challenges of life. A promise which has always helped us is Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you” declares the Lord “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” We pray this promise for you all in the Benefice and your future. Yours thankfully, Geoff and Hope
