Structure-function relationships in the water-use strategies and ecological diversity of the Bromeliaceae Jamie Oliver Males Clare College, University of Cambridge Date of submission: 5th May 2017 This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Structure-function relationships in the water-use strategies and ecological diversity of the Bromeliaceae Jamie Oliver Males Summary The Bromeliaceae is one of the largest and most ecologically diverse angiosperm families in the Neotropics. In recent years, this family has begun to emerge as a model system for the study of plant evolutionary ecology and physiology, and major advances have been made in understanding the factors involved in episodes of rapid diversification and adaptive radiation in specific bromeliad lineages. However, despite a long tradition of ecophysiological research on the Bromeliaceae, an integrative, evolutionarily-contextualised synthesis of the links between anatomical) physiological, and ecological aspects of bromeliad biology has hitherto been lacking. The overarching aim of this research project was therefore to use new quantitative data representing a wide range of bromeliad taxonomic and functional groups to elucidate how variation in leaf traits connected by structure- function relationships influences ecological differentiation among bromeliad taxa. Special emphasis was placed on hydraulic and water relations traits because of fast-paced contemporary developments in these fields. The methodologies employed included an assessment of the diversity of bromeliad hydrological habitat occupancy, quantification of key anatomical and physiological traits and their correlations, investigation of the links between vascular and extra-xylary anatomy and hydraulic efficiency and vulnerability, quantification of stomatal sensitivity to leaf-air vapour pressure deficit and stomatal kinetics, and a case study of trait-mediated niche segregation among congeneric epiphytic bromeliad species on the Caribbean island of Trinidad. -

A total of 32 members attended the meeting. Apologies were given for seven members. Ron mentioned that Rosemary Dalton had had a second operation and was on the mend. Laurie Mountford had also recovered. General Business Ross reminded the meeting that DVD’s containing Newsletters from various Groups and Societies from around Australia were available from the library. The disks are updated monthly. Also, with the author’s permission, member’s articles and photos used in our Newsletters and/or for presentations, would be retained by the library. Both Trish’s and Debbie’s originals have been filed. A copy of Derek Butcher’s (Uncle Derek) latest Tillandsia disk is now in the library. The issue of labelling sales and raffle broms was mentioned again (see p3, FNCBSG(NSW) Newsletter, March 2012). A much repeated discussion on label- ling followed. Ross pointed out that the whole idea of labelling is to make ones life easier, especially when you want to replace lost plants or plants you wish to obtain. You are not expected to remember all the names just retain the tags. In regard to library books, please ensure that the borrowing cards are filled out correctly when borrowing, and that your name is crossed out when the book is returned. -

It accounts for 187 names in six lists: I. Generic names (133), II. Invalid names (7), III. A synonymized checklist of the genera of the Bromeliaceae (56 accepted genera, and 77 synonyms), IV. Nothogenera (bigeneric hybrids) (41), V. Invalid nothogenus (1), and VI. Putative fossil genera (5). Comments on nomenclature or taxonomy are given when necessary to explain problematic issues, and notes on important researchers of the family are intercalated throughout. The etymological derivation of each name is given, including if named after a person, brief remarks on their identity. Appended is a chronological list of monographs of the Bromeliaceae and other works significant to the taxonomy of the family. 3 INTRODUCTION This paper catalogues all the known generic names of the Bromeliaceae. These names have appeared in the literature since the starting-point of binomial nomenclature in Linnaeus’ ‘Species plantarum’ (1753). The catalogue accounts for 187 names in six lists: I. Generic names (133), II. Invalid names, i.e. names without description or status, listed here merely for historical documentation (7), III. Email: [email protected] and [email protected] Abstract Vriesea baturitensis is described and illustrated as a new species. It is compared with V. friburgensis and V. rodigasiana, which we consider to be morphologically the most related species. The new taxon occurs in isolated Atlantic forest patches along the Baturité mountain range, in central-north Ceará state, Northeastern Brazil. It is characterized by the compact and regular rosette, a rounded leaf apex, stiff and erect peduncle, peduncle and primary bracts bright yellow, and the particular colors and sizes of the floral bracts and sepals. The humid habitat where the new species was found, known in Brazil as brejo de altitude, is surrounded by the Caatinga (Brazilian dry woodland) and due to its climatic conditions supports a rich flora of epiphytes. In Pico Alto we collected and photographed six different species of bromeliads, two of each being Guzmania and Vriesea, one of each being Aechmea and Racinaea. -
