The book presents annotations of books published in 1991 or 1992, along with a few titles published too late for the eighth edition and a few early 1993 releases. Titles are grouped by subject matter under four main headings: Imagining, Learning, Exploring, and Understanding. The book includes a special index which lists 150 "classics" of young adult literature from 1940 to 1990. It also includes subject, title, and author indexes and a directory of publishers. It became my goal to serve on a booklist committee at some time before hanging up my American Express card. Thus, when Aileen Nielsen was named editor of the eighth edition of Your Reading, I offered myself for her committee. Two years later, with much amazement, I read the letter from NCTE's Executive Committee asking me to chair the committee for the ninth edition. I cunsidered all the pros and cons of taking on this responsibility and accepted because this list is for junior high/middle school teachers to use as a tool to inspire, intrigue,and motivate junior high/middle school kids, a difficult age group, but one I know something about, having been in the junior high classroom for twenty-six years. I also accepted the challenge because of my twenty-plus-yearlove affair with YA literature. Through NCTE and ALAN (Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of NCTE) I have accumulated a storehouse of opinions about the body of literature published for young adults. Therefore, I not only acknowledge the efforts of my committee, which were loyal and tremendous; the bullying which my associate editor, Paul Hirth, took from me; but I also acknowledge every teacher, author, publisher, librarian, editor, and NCTE staff member who has supported me all these years. Anne Webb St. Louis, MO January 1993 vii Foreword The National Council of Teachers of Englishis proud to publish four different booklists, renewed on a regularrotation, in its bibliography series. The four are Adventuring with Books(pre-K through grade 6), Your Reading (middle school/junior high),Books for You (senior high), and High InterestEasy Reading (junior/seniorhigh reluctant read- ers). Conceived as resources for teachersand students alike, these volumes reference thousands of the most recentchildren's and young adults' trade books. The works listed cover awide range of topics, from preschool ABC books to science fiction novelsfor high school seniors; from wordless picture books to nonfictionworks on family stresses, computers, and mass media. Each edition of an NCTE booklist is compiledby a group of teachers and librarians, under leadership appointedby the NCTE Executive Committee. Working for most of three orfour years with new books submitted regularly by publishers, thecommittee members review, select, and annotate the hundreds ofworks to be listed in their new edition. The members of the committee thatcompiled this volume are listed on one of the first pages. Of course, no single book is right for everyone or everypurpose, so inclusion of a work in this booklist is notnecessarily
