The paper uses the models developed by Sarasvathy (2001) and Hurley Hanson et al. (2013) and Shute’s own writings on his career to analyse the nature of his career. The paper found that Shute’s experience indicates that entrepreneurial behaviour and the success of entrepreneurs not only depends on the context of the industry in which they operate, but also the level of dynamism within that industry. Models such as the H-H model, whilst useful in profiling entrepreneurial careers, need to take into account broader environmental influences. In hindsight, it would have been better to dip in and out of it rather than to read it all in one go, as the poems did start to feel a bit similar after a while. Such beautiful writing but I found it felt very similar after a bit. I wouldn't call E. Nesbit a Great Poet I guess I would call her an uneven poet.

Nevil Shute: Engineer, Aviator, Author & Model Engineer NEVIL SHUTE: ENGINEER, AVIATOR, AUTHOR AND MODEL ENGINEER by Allan J Bester Few people may be aware of the multifaceted life of Nevil S Norway, better known as Nevil Shute, a popular novelist of the latter half of the last century. Nevil Shute Norway Born on 17 January 1899 in Ealing, a suburb to the west of London, Nevil Shute Norway was the younger son of Arthur Norway and his wife Mary (nee Gadsden). Arthur Norway was a senior civil servant in the General Post Office in London. At the age of 11, Nevil, tormented by the unsympathetic responses of both pupils and teachers to his unfortunate bad stammer, played truant from his first preparatory school in Hammersmith, preferring the mechanical challenges posed by the steam engine and model aircraft displays at the Science Museum in South Kensington. He was especially captivated by the engineering and mechanics evident in the Blériot and Antoinette aircraft of the period. As a result of his truancy, he was moved to the Dragon School in Oxford, where he developed extramural interests in sailing, motorcycle engines and aeroplanes, and thence to Shrewsbury School in 1913. In 1912, his father was transferred to Dublin, Ireland as Secretary to the Post Office (the highest position in the Post Office), and Nevil remained with friends in Oxford to finish his schooling. Nevil and his older brother Fred shared a Rudge Multi motorcycle bought new in 1914, a month after the Great War commenced. Less than a year later, 19-year old Fred was seriously wounded in action in Flanders, dying of his wounds three weeks later.

From fantasy, to war, to salvation, to heroism, to romance, to adventure, airplanes have been and continue to be a powerful symbol in American film. Two intertwined themes based on flight are menace and hope, and the tension between them has successfully driven many flying films. This may explain why film has featured the airplane as the archetypal machine of the twentieth century, just as, according to Leo Marx in The Machine in the Garden, the locomotive served as the archetypal machine in American literature of the nineteenth century. Specifically, this dissertation will focus on how cargo planes, bomber aircraft, commercial airliners, and all those aboard have been portrayed in film from 1950-2004. iv Table of Contents Abstract .......................................................... .. iv Chapter 1: Introduction................................................. 1 Chapter 2: Myth and Symbol in Flying Films 25 Chapter 3: The Menace of Flight 47 Chapter 4: Heroic Men and Flying Machines 75 Chapter 5: "Passin' Gas": Aerial Refueling Scenes. ...................... .. 110 Chapter 6: Atomic and Chemical Threats in the Sky 141 Chapter 7: Disturbed and Disturbing Passengers 169 Chapter 8: Cast Away: The Machine in the Sky 198 Chapter 9: Race and Gender in Flying Films 218 Chapter 10: Conclusion 248 Appendix: Filmography ..........................

  • Photograph Album
Photograph Album The fourth biennial Nevil Shute gathering was held from 2nd to 6th October 2005 at the Cape Codder Resort hotel in Hyannis Massachusetts. These Gatherings all began when an event was originally planned to mark the author Nevil Shute's centenary in January 1999. For that event DanTelfair envisaged a small gathering but in fact over 100 people turned up for that special occasion and they decided to continue the party in 2001 in Australia. The trend being set, the next gathering was in June 2003 in Portsmouth, England and by logical continuity the latest gathering on Cape Cod followed in October 2005. Sixty-five dedicated Shutists assembled in sunny early fall weather to talk about, and share views on, the life and work of our favourite author. Registration. On the Sunday afternoon all those who registered received a tote bag containing a wonderfully produced programme of events, guides to the area, notepads and a mysterious envelope marked "Do not open but bring to the evening reception". The envelopes contained a sticker with the name of a character in a Shute novel. Without looking at the name the stickers were placed on our backs and the object was to find out who the characters were by asking different people one question at a time. If the purpose was to get people circulating it certainly did so but there were some puzzled looks and one person I asked said they had only read about four of the novels and hadn't heard of my character. To the accompaniment of music from Shute's novels played by Lillian Ruiz and Gail Shoemaker on violins, people chatted, ate, renewed old acquaintances and made new ones.

Liberty, Art, & Culture Vol. 28, No. 4 Summer 2010 Novelist of achievement By Phillip Salin I’ve often been surprised at how easy it is for admirable absence of villains in most of his stories. The tension generally artists and works of art to go unnoticed by most of the people comes from attempting to accomplish a difficult task, rather who would really enjoy them. What a waste on both sides: than from any artificial need to overcome malevolent human authors, directors, composers are deprived of their proper adversaries. Shute’s plots emerge naturally from the attempts audience and appropriate recognition; the audience is deprived of his main characters to try to get a job done right. of potential enlightenment and enjoyment. On the Beach (1957) is Shute’s most readily available book, This problem is particularly acute for worthy “old” works but is quite atypical of him. If this is the only Shute story of art. One might expect critics to help maintain awareness of with which you are familiar, you cannot avoid getting a very admirable works and artists, but the majority of critical analysis mistaken impression of his work, and possibly of his purposes is only Monday morning quarterbacking, scoring points on in writing the story itself. Shute was not a passive man, but On an artist for what he didn’t but might have done in his most the Beach portrays a world that has allowed itself to fall into a recent performance. Such criticism overlooks the simpler, more fatal situation from which there is no escape; life on Earth is basic functions of publicizing and market-making, of helping doomed by the unintended consequences of a nuclear war.

Gremlins and Demons: The Decline of Britain as Seen in Nevil Shute’s Novels ©2004, Arden Jensen Nevil Shute, perhaps best known for A Town Like Alice, which was made into a popular PBS miniseries, and1 the apocalyptic On the Beach, a nuclear holocaust story made into a film starring Gregory Peck and Eva Gardner, was an aeronautical engineer who wrote novels that are a reflection of his engineering mind. He points out problems, investigates their causes, and proposes solutions. Shute saw large abstract forces in the world that were unsound, which may be seen as demons. These demons gave birth to concrete problems that one can call gremlins, a term that Shute as an engineer, aviator, and military officer knew well. In fact, in one of his novels, No Highway, he actually used the word: Some unknown gremlin in it [the aircraft] had leaped out upon Bill Ward suddenly, so suddenly that he had been unable to send word upon the radio, and it [the gremlin] had killed him, and thirty other people with him. [Samuelson's] instinct, bred of nearly twenty thousand hours in the air, told him that one day that thing would happen again. (75) Thus, a gremlin has caused a disaster, the crash of an airliner. However, in Shute’s economy, there is a demon that gave birth to the gremlin. In this particular case, the demon was an engineering error that the bureaucratic mindset of the British government agency in charge of civil aviation was unwilling or unable to address. Shute believed that if a demon is not dealt with, it will spawn more and more gremlins.
