One of Britain’s most versatile performers, she was at home in revues, comedies and musicals and equally comfortable in dramatic roles. John, along with his wife of 62 years – the delightful Googie Withers and their charming eldest daughter Joanna McCallum, helped to thoroughly enthral and entertain many MVM members at the annual gathering back in September 2007, giving us all an afternoon to remember for a very long time. On that occasion, John kindly signed my copy of his excellent book ‘Life With Googie’ which naturally I will treasure even more now, along with his thoughtful and most gracious letters regarding MVM – and the enjoyment each magazine gave both Googie and himself. Not only a talented actor of the stage and screen, John went into the production side of the business in Australia – especially with the popular TV series ‘Skippy’ in the 1960s, which I remember with affection. John and Googie (pictured here in the 1950s) appeared together many times on the screen – and more so on the stage in a wide variety of successful productions spanning some fifty years.

NAMED AFTER A CHELSEA STREET SIGN IN 1958. LED A REVOLUTION IN BRITISH CINEMA WOODFALL FILMS the original indie film house was hellbent on revolutionising the conservative and comfortable arts scene and establishing a brave new face for British Film. As the 1950s closed and the new dawn of the 1960s broke, London’s heartbeat became the pulse of a global creative revolution. Three monumental filmmakers – Tony Richardson, Karel Reisz and Lindsay Anderson set the pace. At the forefront Richardson, John Osborne and producer Harry Saltzman’s prolific company Woodfall. Its founders and collaborators including Albert Finney, Rita Tushingham and Richard Lester created one breakthrough commercial and critical success after another. The Woodfall Films legacy began with Look Back in Anger, but went on to produce some of the most well-regarded films of its time: Tom Jones, The Knack ...And How to Get It, A Taste of Honey, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, Kes and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. 2 “NO OTHER INDIVIDUAL INDEPENDENT PRODUCTION COMPANY COMES CLOSE TO BEING AT FOREFRONT OF THE NEW WAVE, THE TRANSITION FROM SWINGING LONDON AND BEYOND TO A NEW POLITICAL RADICALISM, WHILE ALSO EMBODYING THE IMPACT OF HOLLYWOOD FUNDING AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANGLO-CONTINENTAL CO-PRODUCTION. • Trailblazers: Queens of TV Comedy at BFI Southbank & Hackney Empire
12/41 Trailblazers: Queens of TV Comedy at BFI Southbank & Hackney Empire as part of the London 2012 Festival As an official part of the London 2012 Festival - the spectacular 12-week nationwide celebration running from 21 June until 9 September 2012 - BFI Southbank in association with The Hackney Empire is presenting a season celebrating those pioneering ‘golden girls’ of British TV comedy between 14 to 28 August. As BFI season curator Dick Fiddy explains, “Nowadays funny women are a fixed part of the TV landscape but there was a time when very few toughed it out in a male dominated genre. The pinnacle of success was to be given your own show and 2012 is the perfect time to acknowledge those ‘golden girls’ that achieved that Olympian feat”. From Joyce Grenfell, Beryl Reid, Diana Dors, Marti Caine, Victoria Wood to French & Saunders, these funny women achieved the rare accolade of hosting their own shows in a male dominated era. The season is split between two venues: BFI Southbank will present three events focusing on the careers of a variety of trailblazing female TV comedy stars with archive clips, while Hackney Empire will host two nights of live stand-up from contemporary funny women supplemented by vintage footage from the archive. Our final event of the season will look specifically at the groundbreaking all-female sketch show Smack the Pony, which finished some ten years’ ago but still has resonance within TV comedy today. The season kicks off with Storytellers and Cabaret Stars on Tuesday 14 August at BFI Southbank with a compilation of some of the finest TV appearances by arch comic storyteller and mimic, Joyce Grenfell.

  • The Pirates and Pop Music Radio
SELLING THE SIXTIES Was pirate radio in the sixties a non-stop psychedelic party – an offshore discothèque that never closed? Or was there more to it than hip radicalism and floating jukeboxes? From the mavericks in the Kings Road and the clubs ofSohotothemultinationaladvertisers andbigbusiness boardrooms Selling the Sixties examines the boom of pirate broadcasting in Britain. Using two contrasting models of unauthorized broadcasting, Radios Caroline and London, Robert Chapman situates offshore radio in its social and political context. In doing so, he challenges many of the myths which have grown up around the phenomenon. The pirates’ own story is framed within an examination of commercial precedents in Europe and America, the BBC’s initial reluctance to embrace pop culture, and the Corporation’s eventual assimilation of pirate programming into its own pop service, Radio One. Selling the Sixties utilizes previously unseen evidence from the pirates’ own archives, revealing interviews with those directly involved, and rare audio material from the period. This fascinating look at the relationship between unauthorized broadcasting and the growth of pop culture will appeal not only to students of communications, mass media, and cultural studies but to all those with an enthusiasm for radio history, pop, and the sixties. Robert Chapman’s broadcasting experience includes BBC local radio in Bristol and Northampton. He has also contributed archive material to Radios One and Four. He is currently Lecturer and Researcher in the Department of Performing Arts and Media Studies at Salford College of Technology.
