Much of the information you as students need is on the university’s web site or other electronically accessible sites. Complete information about the Chowan’s Academic Program is contained in the university catalog. This handbook contains policies administered by the department of Student Affairs as well as information that the university is required to communicate to students in this publication. As a member of the university community you are expected to familiarize yourself with the information contained in this handbook and to follow the policies contained within the handbook. Lets go CU Hawks!www.gocuhawks.com 4 | WELCOME TO CHOWAN Dear Chowan University Student, It is with great enthusiasm that I extend a welcome to you on behalf of the entire Chowan University community. If you are new to the Chowan family, I want to assure you that you are joining a group of individuals who are serious about academic pursuits, but equally serious about being faithful to the call God has placed upon them. For more than 171 years, the people of Chowan University have distinguished themselves by their care for each other. We are so pleased that you have decided to be a part of the next chapter in this great university’s story. Chowan is first, and foremost, a Christian University and will continue to remain true to this bedrock principle. The Christian character is interwoven throughout the history of Chowan, from the inception in 1848 as Chowan Baptist Female Institute to today as we proudly proclaim that we have Faith in the Future in our students and our University. All students bring a diverse background of faith and experiences. All individuals who attend, support, or instruct are given a multitude of opportunities to celebrate their faith walk, which we pray ends in embracing Jesus Christ. In the midst of unprecedented times and as we all stay “Chowan Strong and Safer Together,” I urge each of you to practice social distancing, use proper hygiene, and wear face coverings. We have employed new methods and protocols to keep our students, faculty, staff, and university community safe. It will take each of us to make this a reality! We are asking that each of you submit daily health checks and attend classes in the traditional, hybrid, and online formats. We are requiring each Chowan University student, faculty, and staff member to demonstrate self-discipline because our diligence and proactive actions can help all of us remain healthy. I expect you to get involved; it is your responsibility to be a good student, a committed student-athlete, a good neighbor, an understanding roommate, and a contributing citizen. It is also your job to find happiness and become champions in body, mind, and soul. As students, you are responsible for balancing the classroom, athletics, arts and club participation, for the classroom nourishes your mind, competition nourishes your body, and the arts nourish your soul. I pray you are transformed by your time at Chowan. As faculty, staff, and administrators, we commit ourselves to your advancement through our teaching, learning, engaging, and serving. As President of Chowan University, I want to invite you to come to my office in the Columns Building and let me know how you are doing. I want to get to know each of you. Please know how deeply honored I am to serve as president of this wonderful university. Sincerely Yours, Kirk E. Peterson, Ph.D. President, Chowan University www.chowan.edu | 5 Welcome to Chowan! It is my pleasure to welcome you to Chowan University. The 2020-2021 year will be different in many ways. COVID 19 has required us to rethink how we deliver our services to students. Your patience is requested as we navigate unchartered events together. I have chosen to work in higher education because I enjoy assisting students and their families as they pursue a college education. The excitement and disappointments of life are both part of the collegiate experience. Chowan University gives students the privilege of being supported through the process. There are community principles which all members are expected to embrace. Chowan University is a community that nurtures
