Bankhead will spend one season with the Reds, collecting a 10-4 record, with a 2.93 ERA in 70.2 innings pitched, allowing just four home runs MLB.COM Senzel named No. 2 third base prospect Highly-touted player set to experiment with SS/2B, outfield in Spring Training By Mark Sheldon MLB.com @m_sheldon 12:48 AM ET CINCINNATI -- Nick Senzel was an elite and highly anticipated prospect the moment the Reds selected him with the second overall pick in 2016. That latest accolade was revealed on Tuesday when Senzel was ranked as the No. 2 third baseman in the Minor Leagues by MLB Pipeline. Senzel, 22, placed one spot behind the No. 1 third baseman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Blue Jays. Ranked No. 1 in the organization by MLB Pipeline, and No. 9 in all of MLB, Senzel batted .321/.391/.514 with 14 home runs and 65 RBIs in 119 games combined last season at Class A Advanced Daytona and Double-A Pensacola. He missed a few games in the final week while being treated for vertigo, but has overcome the issue through therapy. One of the bigger questions facing Senzel and the Reds this season is whether he will actually get to play third base. Cincinnati is happy with Eugenio Suarez there and plans to have Senzel show off some versatility in Spring Training. At his first big league camp, Senzel will get opportunities to play shortstop and second base -- positions he previously played as an amateur -- and will get his first exposure to the outfield. The club believes his time in the big leagues can begin similarly to former Reds star Todd Frazier, who played multiple infield and outfield positions before finding a home at third base. "I want him to help our ballclub, but I also want him to do it at a position where he's comfortable doing what he does," Reds manager Bryan Price said in December. "I think I need to build up a stronger familiarity with him to create my own opinions of where he's best suited or if he is a multi-positional asset to our club." Senzel has only played third base since turning professional following his college career at the Univ. of Tennessee. "When opportunities and challenges present themselves, especially on the baseball field, they're exciting," Senzel said in December. "It's some different positions I've never played before, especially left and right field. It could create some opportunity for me. I'm just going to go out there and try to get some guidance from people who know what they're talking about and play [the position] to the best of my ability." Senzel is expected to begin the 2018 season at Triple-A Louisville -- likely in part with an eye towards service time for free agency. But his bat -- and versatility -- could always force the issue to promote him and leave the Reds with no choice but to find a spot for him in their lineup. MLB Pipeline compiles its lists with input from industry sources, including scouts and scouting directors. Lists are based on analysis of players' skill sets, upsides, proximity to the Majors and potential immediate impact to their teams. Senzel is the third Reds prospect to land in the Top 10 lists by position. Hunter Greene was named last week as the eighth-best right-handed pitcher. Shed Long was ranked No. 6 for second basemen on Monday. Senzel moved up two spots from No. 9 a year ago to No. 7. Greene, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 draft, made his debut on the list, as did Trammell and Mahle, while Winker returned to the Top 100 after being ranked No. 47 in 2015 and No. 51 in 2016 but falling out of the Top 100 last year. Former Madeira High School standout Andrew Benintendi, who finished second this past season in American League Rookie of the Year voting, topped the Top 100 a year ago.     The Boston Red Sox Saturday, September 23, 2017 * The Boston Globe Red Sox put new formula to work in win over Reds Peter Abraham CINCINNATI — The Red Sox were up by a run after four innings against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night and Rick Porcello had thrown only 57 pitches. His performance had been erratic, the righthander putting eight men in base. But Porcello expected he would stay in the game because that is what managers traditionally do, they let starting pitchers try to hold a lead. But most managers do not have a pitcher of David Price’s caliber in the bullpen and John Farrell does. Farrell turned to Price in the fifth inning and he handed that lead over to Addison Reed with two outs in the seventh. Craig Kimbrel took over in the ninth and the Sox beat the Reds, 5-4. It was a dress rehearsal for the playoffs, the Sox using Price for multiple innings to get to Reed and Kimbrel. That combination can be as good if not better than what any other playoff team has. “You saw it last year in the playoffs, so many starters went five innings or even less. You need that guy to bridge the gap,” Reed said. “When that guy is David Price, it doesn’t get much better. We’re pretty damn excited to have him down there.” With the Yankees losing in Toronto, the Sox now lead the American League East by four games with nine games to play. “The ball’s in our court.

WESTERN STANDINGS Division by two games over the Baysox. The title marked the franchise's third regular-season division championship in Team W-L PCT GB franchise history, winning the South Division in 2004 and the Western Division in 2010. This year, the Curve led the Altoona 74-66 .529 -- West for 96 of 140 games and took over sole possession of the top spot for good on August 22. The Curve won 10 of Bowie 72-68 .514 2.0 their final 16 games, including a regular-season-best five-game winning streak from August 20-24. Altoona clinched the Western Division regular-season title with a walk-off win over Harrisburg on September 4 and a loss by Bowie at Akron 69-71 .493 5.0 Richmond that afternoon. The Curve advanced to the ELCS with a three-game sweep over the Bowie Baysox in the Erie 65-75 .464 9.0 Western Division Series. In the Championship Series, the Curve took the first two games in Trenton before beating Richmond 63-77 .450 11.0 the Thunder, 4-2, at PNG Field on September 14 to lock up their second league title in franchise history. Including the Harrisburg 60-80 .429 14.0 regular season and the playoffs, the Curve won their final eight games, their best winning streak of the year.

In total, the new player development system includes 179 teams across 17 leagues in 43 states and four provinces. Including the AZL and GCL, there are 209 teams across 19 leagues in 44 states and four provinces. That includes the 150 teams in the PDL and AZL/GCL along with the four partner leagues: the American Association, Atlantic League, Frontier League and Pioneer League. The long-time Triple-A structure of the International and Pacific Coast Leagues have been replaced by Triple-A East and Triple-A West. Triple-A East consists on 20 teams; all 14 from the International League, plus teams moving from the Pacific Coast League, the Southern League and the independent Atlantic League. Triple-A West is comprised of nine Pacific Coast League teams and one addition from the Atlantic League. WESTERN STANDINGS behind Akron in the Western Division, clinching a wild card berth with a 2-0, ten-inning win over Richmond in the Team W-L PCT GB regular-season finale on September 5. 2016 marked the first time the Curve have made back-to-back postseasons Akron 77-64 .546 -- since going to four straight from 2003-2006, the first four playoff appearances in team history. Altoona took over first Altoona 76-64 .543 0.5 place in the Western Division for the first time on June 26, and held that spot for 55 of 63 games until Akron took it Harrisburg 76-66 .535 1.5 on the next-to-last day of the season. Richmond 62-79 .440 15.0 Erie 62-79 .440 15.0 IN THE PLAYOFFS: 2016 marked the seventh postseason appearance in Altoona franchise history and the fifth as a Bowie 56-86 .394 21.5 wild card qualifier. The Curve faced Akron in the Division Series for the fourth time, and have dropped all four series. In Game 1, the Curve held a 5-1 lead through two innings and led by a 7-3 score through six innings before Akron E.L. WESTERN DIVISION SERIES scored six runs in the seventh and won, 12-8.
