Karnataka is consistently striving to improve human development parameters in education, nutrition and health through many initiatives and well-conceived programmes. However, it is still a matter of concern that certain pockets of the state have not shown as much improvement as desired in the human development parameters. Human resource is the real wealth of any state. Sustainable growth and advancement is not feasible without human development. It is expected that these reports will throw light on the unique development challenges within each district, and would provide necessary pointers for planners and policy makers to address these challenges. The District Human Development Reports are expected to become guiding documents for planning and implementation of programmers within the districts. I urge the members of parliament, Legislators, Zilla Panchayath, Taluk Panchayath and Gram Panchayath Members, vis-a-vis representatives of Urban Local Bodies to make conscious attempt to understand the analysis that has been provided in the district human development reports and strive hard to ensure that the identified gaps are bridged through effective planning and implementation. A number of people from many walks of life including administrators, academicians and people representatives have contributed in making of these reports. I commend each and every one associated with the preparation of the District Human Development Reports. I acknowledge the efforts put in by district committees headed by Chief Executive Officers and Officers of the planning Department in completing this challenges task. It gives me great pride to share with you that Karnataka is the first State in the country to prepare district Human Development Reports for all the districts. For this, each individual of a region has to have the opportunity to lead a long and healthy life, be educated and have adequate employment opportunities to earn sufficient income required to lead a decent life. Further, the vulnerable sections of the society –women, marginalized groups and minorities need special attention through appropriate policy interventions. Kolar District Human Development Report provides an in-depth analysis of the vari- ous dimensions of development of Kolar. It allows us to critically evaluate the present status of development and gives different options available for progressing further in the path of development. The report is hence, a critical input for planning and implementation of various welfare schemes in the district. I am sure that the findings of the study and the recommendations made will help the district administration considerably in planning the implementation of various state and central government programmes and providing sufficient priority to issues of immediate con- cern. I congratulate the ZP of Kolar for successfully completing this difficult endeavour. This Human Development Report is a commendable effortin documenting all aspects of human development including education, health, income, poverty, employment, gender issues and governance. This report is going to strengthen the process of grassroots level planning and implementing the effective programs in future. The DHDR-Kolar has been successful in bringing the basic issues of development in Kolar District and its five taluks to the forefront. The report is of considerable importance to the local-level planners, policy makers, development administrators and governmental and non-governmental institutions involved in the formulation of grassroots-level development programs. This report is particularly useful to the members of GraamPanchayaths, Taluk Panchayaths and Zilla Panchayaths since the concepts and issues discussed in this report and the wealth of information provided in the report is usually found in one book or report. Thus the report would enable them collectively formulate more meaningful and effective programme for all-round human development in the district. KUMAR: Will the Minister of CULTURE be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government has finalized its proposal for sending its entry for world heritage status long with the criteria to select entry for world heritage site status; (b) if so, the details thereof along with the names of temples, churches, mosques and monuments 2Iected and declared as national heritage in various States of the country, State-wise; (c) whether the Government has ignored Delhi as its official entry to UNESCO and if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor; (d) whether, some sites selected for UNESCO entry are under repair and renovation; (e) if so, the details thereof and the funds sanctioned by the Government in this regard so far, ate-wise; and (f) the action plan of the Government to attract more tourists to these sites. Government has finalized and submitted the proposal for “Historic City of Ahmedabad” as the entry in the cultural category of the World Heritage List for calendar year 2016-17. The proposal was submitted under cultural category under criteria II, V and VI (list of criteria in Annexure I) (b) For the proposal submitted related to Historic City of Ahmedabad submitted this year, list of nationally important monuments and those listed by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation are given in Annexure II.

    Bangalore This bustling and delightful city, situated at an altitude of about 1000 metres, was founded by Vijayanagar chieftain Kempe Gowda (1513-1569). He established four towers around the outer limits. These are still seen on Bellary Road, at Lalbagh, Ulsoor and Gavi Gangadhareswara temple at Gavipuram. The people of modern Bangalore still retain their traditions and values. Temples continue to be major centres of religious, social and cultural activities. Gavi Gangadhareswara temple: Sage Gautama had worshipped Lord Siva in this cave temple. The sanctum facing south, which is a rare feature, is flanked by the shrines of Devi Parvati and Durga. The images of Shanmukha and Ayyappa and those of Chandra, Surya and Bhairava are exquisitely carved. In the front yard; there are stone monoliths of sun and moon discs. On Makara Sankranti evening, the sun's rays pass through the horns of the Nandi briefly to fall on the Lingam. Veeranjaneya temple is situated at a gradient about a km from this shrine. Atop, there is a huge statue of Rama embracing Hanuman.     Kolar District

    KOLAR DISTRICT CHAPTER I GENERAL OLAR, which is the headquarters town of the district and by Origin o'f K which name the district is also called, was known as D,ame ' Kolahala ', ' Kuvalala ' and 'Kolala' in the former times. There are varying accounts as to how the t:.wn got its name and three _of them are narrated below. According to a legend, Arjuna, son of Kritavirya, also called Kartaviryarjuna to distinguish him from Arjuna of Mahabharata fame, was ruling over a kingdom which included the Kolar a:.rea. This king had a boon conferred on him by sage Dl'.hltatraya, which gave him a thous~md arms and other mighty powers with which he oppressed both human beings and Devatas. Kartaviryarjuna is said to have humbled even Ravana, the mighty king of Lanka, by seizing and tying him up. About this time lived sage Jamadagni (nephew of Vishwamitra), who had married Renuka, daughter of the king Prasenajit. The couple had five sons, the last of whom was Parashurama or Rama with the axe. Sage Jamadagni had in his care Surabhi, the celestial cow of plenty given to him by Indra, which had the miraculous power to ,give all tltat was asked for. Karttwiryarjuna in one of his hunting expeditions chanced to visit the ashrama of Jamadagni and the sage regaled him in such a magnificent manner that his curiosity was roused and he was not satisfied till he learnt the secret about the heavenly animal and its powers. Avarice took l10ld of king Kartavir~ yarjuna and he demanded the cow for himsel:t.

A two-fold plan has been adopted in the treatment of this subject. In view of the progress of archffiological research in the State during the past forty years, occasion has been taken to deal in an adequate fashion with the sources from which the materials for the recon­ struction of its ancient history are derived. The information scattered in the Journals of the learned Societies and Reports on Archreology has been carefully sifted and collected under appropriate heads. Among these are Epigraphy, Numismatics, Sculpture and Painting, Architecture, etc. The evidence available from these different sources has been brought together to show not merely their utility in elucidating the history of Mysore during its earliest times, for which written records are not available, but also to trace, as far as may be, with their aid, periods of history which would otherwi8e be wholly a blank. In dealing with that part of the history of Mysore for wbich written records are to any extent available, a more familiar plan has been adopted. It has been divided into periods and each period has been treated under convenient sub-heads. No person who writes on the history of Mysore can do so without being indebted to :Mr.
