The children embark on imaginave adventures that involve a ball. With plenty of posive reinforcement, the goal is for children to experience the joy of moving and being acve. The takeaway for this group is “moving around is fun”. The kindergarteners and 1st graders will have fun learning basic soccer skills like dribbling and shoong through creave games such as sharks and minnows, space invaders, frogger and many more. The children will also learn the fundamental rules of the game itself. The children will then have the opportunity to apply the skills they’ve learned in a 3v3 or 4v4 game scenario on their designated game day. This is the age where games oen look like bees swarming around the ball because they haven’t fully developed the team concept of sharing the ball and spreading out. The takeaway for this age group is “Playing with my ball is fun.” The sessions for 2nd and 3rd graders will focus on ball control skills as well as spaal awareness, change of direcon, sharing the ball with teammates, and sportsmanship. The goal is to encourage children to work together toward a common goal. 4v4 small-sided games on free play days will allow them to develop a love for the game and pracce their skills. The takeaway for this group is “playing soccer with my friends is fun”. The sessions for 4th and 5th graders connue to work on ball mastery as they start to learn various techniques for beang an opponent with a 1v1 move or a 2v1 give and go. Taccal ideas such as posional roles and responsibilies on a team as well as group defending and aacking are also introduced. They will have the opportunity to play small sided games in 6v6 format to get plenty of touches on the ball and become comfortable in a variety of game situaons. The takeaway for this age group is “learning the game is fun”. The curriculum for middle school through high school is vast, progressive and detailed. In general, it centers around developing the physical, technical, taccal and psychological components of the game. Honing basic foot skills will always be involved but now players begin to learn the principles of aack (mobility, support, penetraon, width, creavity) and defending (pressure, cover, balance, compactness). Aenon to dealing with the taccal issue of transion is key as is inslling the psychological values of being resilient and griy when dealing with adversity. Understanding and ulizing different styles of play such as possession and counteraack will also be taught. Free play game sessions is chance for them to try everything they are learning. The beauty of supervised free play is that the game itself is the best teacher. Small-sided games played on smaller fields in a 3v3, 4v4, or 6v6 format allow players 100’s of more touches on the ball and demands exponenally more decision making with and without the ball than in the 11v11 format of the game. Caribbean Teams in North American Professional Soccer: Time for a New Direction? Glen ME Duerr Department of History and Government Cedarville University 104 HRS, 251 N. Main Street Cedarville, Ohio, USA 45314 [email protected] RASAALA, Vol. 5, No. 1 (2014) 1 Caribbean Teams in North American Professional Soccer: Time for a New Direction? Abstract This paper examines the interrelated issues of time and money in club and international football. Specifically, the focus is on small Caribbean countries and territories that are rich in talent, but poor in opportunities. In the past decade, several professional teams in the Caribbean have played in the minor league system in North America, but have been stifled by several factors. This paper argues that the creation of a ‘Caribbean division’ that plays in either the North American Soccer League (NASL) or United Soccer League (USL)-Pro league would enrich and develop teams and players from all parties involved, and they would be more competitive in FIFA World Cup qualifying. The key ingredient is correctly timing such a venture. Keywords: Caribbean, soccer, North America, USL-Pro, NASL RASAALA, Vol. 5, No. 1 (2014) 2 Introduction Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), the regional governing body of soccer in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, sends three and a half teams to the quadrennial FIFA World Cup. The fourth-placed CONCACAF team plays a home and away playoff series against a team in another region, either in Asia, South America or Oceania, depending on the rotation. On every occasion since the number of berths was expanded to three in 1998, the United States and Mexico have taken two of the berths.

City Stars End Winless Streak By Defeating Minnesota 1-0 Page 1 of 2 CLEVELANDCITYSTARS.COM HOME CONTACT US News City Stars End Winless Streak By Defeating Minnesota 1-0 City Stars End Winless Streak By Defeating Minnesota 10 Saturday August 20, 2009 The Cleveland City Stars outshot the Minnesota Thunder on Saturday to win 1-0. Teteh Bangura scored the only goal of the match to beat the Thunder for the second time this season. The first half began slowly, with neither team gaining ground. The Thunder made their first impression in the 17th minute, when forward Marco Terminesi shot the ball across the face of the City Stars goal. The ball went harmlessly out of bounds, with little danger for the Stars. In the 23rd minute, City Stars forward Teteh Bangura changed the pace of the first half after receiving a brilliant cross from forward Jason Hotchkin. Without hesitation Bangura ripped the ball over the Minnesota defender, finding the top far corner to bring the City Stars ahead 1-0. It was the first goal for the Sierra Leone national, who has made 2 starts for the Stars this season. The City Stars continued the pressure, and 5 minutes later midfielder Ryan Stewart came close to widening the gap between the teams. Stewart played the ball in from the corner, forcing Minnesota keeper Nic Platter to make a diving punch to clear the ball. Stars forward Kolby LaCrone also made a contribution, taking a high shot in the 29th minute that flew over the Thunder crossbar. The best chance for a second goal came in the 41st minute from defender Warren Kanu.
