The alarm was sounded at approximately 10:40 and the response was base- wide. A call went out to all off-duty firefighters to assist the fire station crew, which had four engines available to fight the blaze. In addition, all ships present in Gitmo provided teams. They came from the USS Lawrence, USS Saginaw and USCG Ingham. Two sections of base policemen were also dispatched. Many of the volunteers were Seabees, Marines and personnel from Gold Hill Barracks. A tugboat and off-duty ferry stood by, in case they were needed. The ferry would have transported a fire engine from Leeward Point. There were no reported injuries and a reflash watch was set at 1:42 this morning. An investigation has begun to determine the cause of the fire. Full details and filmed coverage will be on the 5:30 edition of TV-8 Newswatch today. MWA World News Digest I at L"I (Photos by M.C. Borden, B.K. Shumate and R.J. FOUR DECADES OF SEATTLE MARINERS BASEBALL Each month during the 2017 season, Mariners Magazine will highlight a different era to celebrate the club’s 40th Anniversary. In this issue, we’ll take a look at the 1977 through 1983 seasons. (Part 1 of 6) By Mike Gastineau The first game in Seattle Mariners history was played on April 6, 1977, in front of a sellout crowd of 57,762. In an historic twist Diego Segui was the Opening Day starting pitcher for the Mariners. Eight years earlier, on October 1, 1969, Segui pitched the 9th inning of what would be the final game in the Seattle Pilots history. He gave up a run that tied the game but got the win when the Pilots scored in their half of the inning. His luck was not as good in 1977 as the Angels chased him in the 4th inning of a 7-0 loss. The opening night defeat aside, when the Seattle Mariners arrived on the baseball scene in April of 1977 AL West titles in 1976. • List of New York's Baseball Sites
LIST OF NEW YORK’S BASEBALL SITES Major League Stadiums and related sites The New York metropolitan area is the scene of some of the most legendary events and home of the greatest figures in baseball history. From the first recorded baseball game at Elysian Fields in 1846, New York has been the “Capitol of Baseball” for 171 years. New York’s baseball history is written in many places – legendary stadiums, distinctive hotels, ordinary homes. Some of these sites are well-marked and internationally- known – others are marked with small plaques, tiny reminders, or even nothing at all. But every one of these sites listed played a major role in the history of baseball, is worth a visit, and deserves to be known and remembered. Enjoy! 1. Yankee Stadium (161st Street and River Avenue, The Bronx) Accessible by the No. 4, D, and B trains from Manhattan. The new Yankee Stadium, opened in April 2009. Costing $2.3 billion, it stands one block north of the original, on the 24-acre former site of Macombs Dam Park, and incorporates reproductions of many features from the original Yankee Stadium across the street, including the frieze, the Indiana limestone exterior, hand-operated scoreboards, the section numbering, and the unusually-shaped outfield dimensions. New features include a museum of Yankee history that displays Thurman Munson’s locker, a Great Hall on 161st Street, and an accessible Monument Park. Home plate was brought from the original Stadium, and Yankee relief pitcher and future Hall of Famer requested that the team reposition the home bullpen and provide it with a door to link it with Monument Park.

TEXAS RANGERS CLIPS – Wednesday, June 06, 2012 TEXASRANGERS.COM Ogando staves off A's to set up Rangers' win By T.R. Sullivan 6/6/2012 2:44 AM ET OAKLAND -- This is why the Rangers want Alexi Ogando in their bullpen. This is why they have resisted the idea of putting him back into the rotation while Neftali Feliz is on the disabled list. He can be a dominating bridge in the Rangers' bullpen, the link between the starter and the last line of defense that consists of Mike Adams in the eighth and Joe Nathan in the ninth. That's how the Rangers worked it on Tuesday night with Ogando getting the big outs in the sixth and seventh inning to help preserve a 6-3 victory over the A's. The A's had two on against Ogando in both innings and both times he left the runners stranded. The A's were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position on the night, including 0-for-3 against Ogando. "Ogando was huge tonight," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "That's what he does," Nathan said after earning his 12th save. "He's the guy who holds our bullpen together. He's the glue and tonight was a prime example about how much this guy means to us." Ogando was the perfect tonic for the stomach virus that has been bothering Rangers starter Derek Holland, who started to fade in the fifth inning. Holland revealed that he has been bothered by the stomach virus for the past couple of weeks and has dropped about 15 pounds.
