A fire late last night destroyed the Gitmo Swingers' clubhouse at Corinaso Point. The alarm was sounded at approximately 10:40 and the response was base- wide. A call went out to all off-duty firefighters to assist the fire station crew, which had four engines available to fight the blaze. In addition, all ships present in Gitmo provided teams. They came from the USS Lawrence, USS Saginaw and USCG Ingham. Two sections of base policemen were also dispatched. Many of the volunteers were Seabees, Marines and personnel from Gold Hill Barracks. A tugboat and off-duty ferry stood by, in case they were needed. The ferry would have transported a fire engine from Leeward Point. There were no reported injuries and a reflash watch was set at 1:42 this morning. An investigation has begun to determine the cause of the fire. Full details and filmed coverage will be on the 5:30 edition of TV-8 Newswatch today.
