Highly recommended Introduction 06:26 Overview of the breast: • The breast (consists of mammary glands + associated skin & Extra connective tissue) is a gland made up of lobes arranged radially .around the nipple (شعاعيا) • Each lobe is further divided into lobules. Between the lobes and lobules we have fat & ligaments called ligaments of cooper • These ligaments attach the skin to the muscle (beneath the breast) to give support to the breast. in shape (مخروطي) *o Shape: it is conical o Position: It lies in superficial fascia of the front of chest. * o Parts: It has a: 1. Base lies on muscles, (حلمة الثدي) Apex nipple .2 3. Tail extend into axilla Extra Position of Female Breast (حلقة ملونة) Base Nipple Areola o Extends from 2nd to 6th ribs. o It extends from the lateral margin of sternum medially to the midaxillary line laterally. o It has no capsule. o It lies on 3 muscles: • 2/3 of its base on (1) pectoralis major* Extra muscle, • inferolateral 1/3 on (2) Serratus anterior & (3) External oblique muscles (muscle of anterior abdominal wall). o Its superolateral part sends a process into the axilla called the axillary tail or axillary process. -

Parts, Shape & position of the Gland • It is conical in shape. • It lies in superficial fascia of the front of chest. • It has a base, apex and tail. • Its base : • extends from 2nd to 6th ribs. • It extends from the sternum to the midaxillary line laterally. • It has no capsule. POSITION OF FEMALE BREAST • Base : • 2/3 of its base lies on the pectoralis major muscle, while its inferolateral 1/3 lies on: • Serratus anterior & • External oblique muscles. • Its superolateral part sends a process into the axilla called the axillary tail or axillary process. POSITION OF FEMALE BREAST • Nipple : • It is a conical eminence that projects forwards from the anterior surface of the breast. • The nipple lies opposite 4th intercostal space. • It carries 15-20 narrow pores of the lactiferous ducts. • Areola : • It is a dark pink brownish circular area of skin that surrounds the nipple. • The subcutaneous tissues of nipple & areola are devoid of fat. STRUCTURE OF MAMMARY GLAND • It is non capsulated gland. • It consists of lobes and lobules which are embedded in the subcutaneous fatty tissue of superficial fascia. • It has fibrous strands (ligaments of cooper) which connect the skin with deep fascia of pectoralis major. -

Title: Creating Anthropomorphic Models with Mesh Phantoms in MCNP to Simulate Mammography Abstract approved: ______________________________________________________________ Steven R. Reese Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women as it accounts for about 25% of all female cancer cases. Studies have shown that early detection of breast cancer increases the chances of a positive prognosis amongst patients therefore it is crucial to provide accurate diagnosis tools in routine exams. Experimenting with new techniques and tools that can provide increased accuracy requires time-consuming and costly studies, therefore, simulating outcomes that have high potential can provide guidance for increased accuracy without requiring expensive tests. This project outlines the possibility of developing an advanced anthropomorphic mesh phantom of the breast to experiment different contrast agents with. The phantom would contain all the components of a real breast and it would be able to simulate the physiological and metabolic components that play a role in the outcome of a real tomosynthesis-mammography scan. This project focuses on creating a basic model of a breast and a tomosynthesis system that provides an indication on whether a simulation system can be produced. The materials used for this project include Abaqus/CAE software, Python, MCNP6.2, and scripting tools as well as resources on tomosynthesis equipment. The results demonstrated a positive outcome thus indicating that the model can be further developed to incorporate the multiple components of a real breast scan to increase the simulation’s realism. -

Diseases of the breast, both benign and malignant, are dangerously common in our population. But for generations, women have suffered in silence because talking about them was something they considered shameful. Small lumps grew unchecked into massive tumours that caused debilitating illnesses and untimely deaths. Two things have changed in recent years: One- Our diagnostic abilities. We have better technology, from mammograms to genetic testing and everything in between, that help our practitioners pick up early stages of diseases and treat them effectively. We have advanced surgical techniques, and personalized chemotherapies that give us a targeted and individualized approach. Second: Our awareness. Our patients today are a lot less afraid to talk about diseases of the breast. They are aware of the early signs and symptoms, they know basic self-care measures like self- examination, and the importance of things like breastfeeding. Both these approaches together give us a much better chance of effectively treating our patients with breast diseases. I congratulate Dr. Sneha Bhuyar, Chairperson, Breast committee, FOGSI and the team for publishing this newsletter on a topic that needs to come out of the shadows even more.
