Conference USA onference USA (C-USA) is the nation's newest Headquarters intercollegiate athletic conference which consists C of 12 universities and spans 12 states across the Chicago, Ill. United States, more than any other Division I-A conference. Conference USA is comprised of UAB, Cincinnati, DePaul, Houston, Louisville, Member Institutions Marquette, Memphis, UNC Charlotte, Saint Louis, South Florida, Southern Mississippi and Tulane. Eleven of the University of Alabama at Birmingham institutions began athletic participation in 1995. Houston University of Cincinnati will join competition in 1996-97. The conference officially unveiled its name, logo and DePaul University commissioner on April 24, 1995, at Harry Caray's Restaurant University of Houston in Chicago. Michael L. Slive was named the first commis• sioner of Conference USA. University of Louisville Conference USA sponsors 18 sports, including Division I• A football, which begins in 1996. Tulane University • • In men's and women's basket- • • • • ball, as well as volleyball, Conference USA teams compete in a three division Commissioner format (Red, White and Blue). UAB, South Florida, Southern Miss and Tulane make up the Red division; Houston, Michael L. Slive Louisville, Memphis and UNC Charlotte the White and Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette and Saint Louis the Blue. Soccer and baseball will compete as one unit. In its first season, Conference USA has quickly established postseason tradition with automatic bids to the confer• ence champion in baseball, women's basketball, men's soccer and volleyball. The C-USA men's basketball champion will earn an automatic bid in 1997. In 1996, six member institutions (Cincinnati, Houston, Louisville, Memphis, Southern Mississippi, and Tulane) will compete for the first Conference USA football championship. Each school will play five conference games. Conference USA will send its football champion to the Liberty Bowl to compete against the Big East Conference begin• ning in 1996. Conference USA also enjoys significant national television exposure. C-USA has developed a six-year basketball television agreement with Creative Sports and ESPN and a five-year football commitment with Liberty Sports. The conference also receives television exposure for women's basketball, volleyball and additional Olympic sports. The presidents of the 12 member institutions serve as Conference USA's Board of Directors.
