[1] This study uses the Argos satellite-tracked surface drifter trajectory data and ENVISAT (European satellite) ASAR (advanced synthetic aperture radar) images to illustrate the ocean vortex trains (OVT) in the Luzon Strait. Two cases that occurred in the northwest of Babuyan Island are observed. The first train of three cyclonic vortices showed up on drifter trajectories from 20° to 20.5°N and from 120° to 121°E, and the second, consisting of five pairs of cyclonic-anticyclonic vortices, occurred on the upstream side of the first one from 19.5° to 20.0°N and from 121.0° to 122.0°E and showed up on the ASAR images acquired on 19 November 2006. The total length of the vortex train axis reaches about 250 km. All vortices propagate northwestward (315° TN). The mean angular velocity is (2.07 ± 0.18) Â 10À5 sÀ1. Theoretical models of ocean vortex radar image derived from radar imaging theories are used to extract dynamical parameters from ASAR imagery signatures, which include the distance between two consecutive vortices and that between two rows of vortices of (22.6 ± 1.9) km and (8.2 ± 1.2) km, respectively, the maximum rotational velocity radius as 4.70 km, and the vortex rotational angular velocity 3 Â 10À5sÀ1. Dynamical analyses give the mean velocity of the current of 0.65 msÀ1, and the propagation velocity of the vortex 0.58 msÀ1. The vortex shedding rate is estimated as 2.57 Â 10À5 sÀ1. The Reynolds number is estimated as 50 to 500. For the individual vortex and the vortex train, the Rossby numbers are O(0.4), and O(0.5), respectively, implying that both vortex and vortex train observed in the Luzon Strait have a sub-mesoscale nature. This study also reveals a strong current with an average surface current velocity of around 0.7 msÀ1 and the direction of around 315° TN flowing directly from the Pacific to SCS passing through the southern Luzon Strait. The mean flow velocity can be calculated using methods developed in this study and OVT dynamical models. The Kuroshio flows along the east side of the Strait. Without topographic blockage, part of the Kuroshio water branches into the Strait forming the Kuroshio intrusion and the loop current [Centurioni et al., 2004; Ho et al., 2004]. Recent investiga- tions reveal that the Luzon Strait is a source region for large amplitude ocean internal waves propagating westward into SCS [Liu et al., 2004; Yuan et al., 2006; Zheng et al., 2007]. [7] The vortex trains to be studied in this paper were observed on the northwest side of Babuyan Island, the northernmost island of the Babuyan Islands. The Babuyan Claro Volcano is a major geological feature on the islands. The vent of volcano is 1180 m high above the sea level. Located in the northernmost tip of the country, the Batanes group of islands lies on the country’s typhoon belt. Because of vulnerability and isolation from the rest of the archipelago, the Ivatans have developed self-sufficient, organic and climate-resilient crop production systems. This paper presents the indigenous crop production systems that have made the Ivatans food self-sufficient despite vulnerability of their agroecosystem. A typical Ivatan farmer owns 3-7 parcels of land. Each parcel has an average size of 300-500 m2.Farmers practice a rootcrop-based multiple cropping system with specific spatial arrangements of corn (Zea mays), gabi (Colocasia esculenta), yam (Dioscorea alata) and tugui (Dioscorea esculenta), using corn stover, hardwood trees or a local reed called viyawu (Miscanthus sp.) as trellis.

Evidence that initial Neolithic settlement of the Batanes came from the south, via Luzon, is not indicated in the assemblages so far excavated. This paper reports a total of 19 species representing one frog (Family Rhacophoridae) and 18 species of reptiles for Batanes Group of Islands. Species richness is highest in both Batan and Sabtang (58%), followed by Itbayat (47%), and Ivuhos (32%). Endemicity is higher in Batan (26%) and Sabtang (21%) compared to Itbayat (11%) and Ivuhos (11%). In addition to the five Batanes reptilian endemics reported by previous workers, namely Draco jareckii, Gekko porosus, Lepidodactylus balioburius, Trimeresurus mcgregori, and Lycodon alcalai, we documented additional four new distributional records for the province. As a whole, isolation and relatively small cumulative area in Batanes group of islands are attributed to the limited representation of herpetofauna. However, its landscapes and habitat types serve as microhabitats to unique and geographically restricted species, making this group of islands an important area for herpetological endemism.     TOURIST INFORMATION KENTING PREFECTURE & CITY 1 Kenting National Park Kenting National Park commonly known as Kenting is a national park located on the Hengchun Peninsula of Pingtung County, Taiwan, covering Hengchun, Checheng, and Manzhou Townships. Established on January 1, 1984, it is Taiwan's first and southernmost national park, covering the southernmost area of the Taiwan island along Bashi Channel. Administered by the Executive Yuan's Ministry of the Interior, this national park is well known for its tropical climate and sunshine, scenic mountain and beach, the Spring Scream rock-band festival held in every March, and has long been one of the most popular tourist destinations in Taiwan with 5.84 million visitors in 2016. The landscape boasted by Kenting National Park is divided into two parts by the long and narrow Hengchun Longitudinal Valley Plain that extends from north to south. With coral sea cliffs teemed with fringing reefs along the west coast, the park features a large number of mountains in the north, and coral tablelands and foothills in the south. The plain, which is formed by fault valleys, has a vast lake called Longlyuantan, together with rising coral tablelands and limestone caves to the east. The earthenware materials involved were collected from three surface sites on Batan Island, Philippines, during the summer of 1969. The interpretation of these potteries was based upon the direct-historical approach to archaeological research. The use of this method was proposed after a cursory examination of the earthen- wares revealed certain general similarities between the archaeological 2 potteries and the ethnographically-known wares produced in the area at the present time.

Holmes he South China Sea is a semienclosed sea at the intersection between East Asia and the Indian Ocean region. It exhibits characteristics similar to the TMediterranean Sea and the Caribbean Sea, as well as some revealing differences. Both the similarities and the differences commend sea-power theorist Alfred Thayer Mahan’s analysis of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea to present- day students and practitioners of maritime strategy. Mahan classified strategic features—especially prospective sites for naval stations—by their positions, strengths, and resources. This article adds a metric to his analytical template, namely, the state of relations with countries that host naval bases.

Surprisingly, Paiwanese villages are willing to accept storing nuclear waste on their homeland for the hope of local development with TPC's monetary compensation. Compared to Paiwanese villagers’ positive attitude, Tao islanders have been demonstrating a contrasting manner towards nuclear waste since they found the state-owned “fish can factory” is actually a nuclear waste repository. The overarch question I would like to ask is why there are different attitudes from different people on the issue of nuclear waste. Drawn from previous literature on nuclear relevant issues, three theoretical perspectives including environmental justice, sense of place and tourism are used to interpret why the two indigenous communities hold different attitudes toward nuclear waste. Based on my fieldwork at Nantian Village and Lanyu Island, I confirm that the fluid relationship between people and land is affected by the contextual factors such as the economic system, colonial history, religions, and etc.
