BRANCH 2 II THOMAS Born 1807. Residence Thakidy. The place where the present S.B. College, Kavala, and the surrounding areas including the police quarters was then known as Thakidy. He got registered in his name a number of revenue plots. In addition to farming, he was engaged in trading. He was very much interested in the affairs of the church. Married Achamma, daughter of Ouseph, Vayalattil house, Pulincunnu. Children: Four sons and a daughter. Died in 1888. II A1 KURUVILLA Born 1825. Earned his livelihood from farming and trading. Married Aley, daugh- ter of Abraham, Poovathumoottil House, Koothrappally. Children: One son and three daughters. Died in 1901. II A2 f MARIAMMA Married to Appachan, Thottayikalathil House, Pulincunnu. II A3 CHERIAN Born 1836. Resided on the western side of Changanacherry Kavala. The house he constructed with ARA & NIRA, existed until recently. He was one of the leading grocery merchants of Changanacherry market and also a reputed social activist. Married Thressia, daughter of Chackochan, Puthenpurayil House, Thottacadu. Children: One son. Cherian expired in 1910. II A4 THOMAS (Parish Priest) Born 1840. Thomas was brought up in a religious atmosphere and the ardent devotion of his father inspired sustained growth of faith in him. Moreover since the family residence was very near the parish church, from early childhood, Tho- mas had the opportunity for attending the Holy Mass and other religious func- tions regularly. It also gave him an opportunity to get acquainted with priests and to know more about faith. The first priest of Marattukalam family was taking shape in him. Thomachan, was proficient in his studies, passed ESLC with distinction and then continued his studies for the priesthood at Varappuzha Semi- nary. In 1874 he was ordained priest and his first assignment as Assistant Vicar was in his own parish church. After that he rendered meritorious service as Vicar at Kurumbanadam, Thottacadu, Champakulam, Pulincunnu and Paippad churches. Fr. Thomas was a Biblical scholar and an unparalleled orator. He earnestly looked after the affairs of the church, brought unity among the parish community, giving no opportunity for difference of opinion and segregational tendencies. The par- ish community very much loved and respected him. His life as an ideal priest brought him respect even from his superiors. He was also a faithful advisor to Bishop Kurialassery. -77- He had a good physique and was quite healthy. During his last term of service as Vicar at Kavalikkara church he succumbed to a sudden illness and entered eternal rest at the age of 94. II A5 CHACKOCHAN Born 1843. From Changanacherry Kavala he shifted his residence to Moorkulangara, adjacent to the former Ruby Rubber Factory. Being a hard worker, by farming and trade in hill produces he became financially sound and acquired extensive areas of fertile land. Married Annamma, daughter of Korahchan, Poovattil House, Changanacherry. Children: Four sons and three daughters. Died in 1886. -:oOo:- II A1 B1 VALLIYA THOMACHAN Born 1850. Residence west of Changanacherry Kavala. He was engaged in the trade of hill produces. Married Rosamma, daughter of Ouseph, Thoompunkal House, Changanacherry. Children: Three sons and four daughters. Died in 1921. II A1 B2 f MARIAMMA Sent in marriage to Puthenpurackal family, Kurumbanadam. II A1 B3 f ANNAMMA Sent in marriage to Karuvelil family, Nedumkunnam. II A1 B4 f THRESIAMMA Sent in marriage to Chalipparambil family, Thottacadu. -:oOo:- II A3 B1 KOCHU THOMACHAN Born 12.6.1876. Residence west of Changanacherry Kavala. Kochu Thomachan inherited the ancestral house with ara and pura. He was engaged in the trade of hill produces. He constructed many shop rooms and rented them out. From younger days he was a God fearing man and was a member of the Francican Third Order in the parish church. He first married Mariamma of Puthenpurackal family at Purackat, Alappuzaha and after her death married Thresiama of Kuttikandam family, Kurumbanadam. He was quite healthy and lived up to the age of 103, thereby becoming a connecting link between the previous generation and the next generation. This helped our family history writers in obtaining cor- rect information about the previous generation. Thomachan had two sons in the first marriage and one son and one daughter in the second marriage. Died on 9.7.1978. -78- II A5 B1 THOMACHAN Born 25.1.1880. The family residence was at Morekulangara. Even when young he showed his unusual ability in farming and trade. He acquired extensive areas of paddy fields and cultivated paddy on a large scale. He was engaged in the production and wholesale trade of boiled rice at Changanacherry market in addi- tion to grocery business. He gave much attention to the higher education of his children. As the father of the managing partners of the Ruby Rubber Works Ltd., he was fortunate enough to live a happy and contented later life. Thomachan was a mature, sensible and humble man. He married Thresiamma, daughter of Kuncheria, Purackal family, Pulincunnu. Thresiamma was the sister of Fr. Mathew Purackal, a well reputed founder Principal of S.B. College. Children: Four sons only. Expired on 27.9.1966. II A5 B2 DOMINIC (Kuttichan) Born April 1885. Resided at Morekulangara. Completed intermediate course at St. Joseph's College, Trichinappally, at a time when few people went for higher education. Until 1933 he was engaged in the extensive plantation of coffee and rubber. He showed his proficiency in business also by actively conducting a variety of business. In 1933 he started rubber trading at Kottayam. It was a reputed firm under the name “Dominic Marattukalam & Sons”. In the next year he shifted his residence to Kottayam for the convenience of business. During World War II the business was dull and so he wound it up and returned to Changanacherry and turned his attention to large scale paddy cultivation. Next he set up a rice mill and tapioca starch factory. The tapioca starch factory was a novel venture, well renowned. It was his hard working and daring nature with firm determination that prompted him to be involved in each of these enterprises. He was friendly, matured, and a true believer. Married Annamma, daughter of Ousephachan, Cheetukavunkal-Palakunnel family, Mammoodu. They have six sons and three daughters. Expired on 3.5.1967. II A5 B3 OUSEPHACHAN Born 1893. Resided on the eastern side of the present Ruby Nagar. Following the footsteps of his ancestors, Ousephachan was engaged in farming. He was gentle, pious, and led a simple life. Married Annamma, from Pongampuzha fam- ily, Ittithanam. Children: Four sons only. Expired in 1962. II A5 B4 CHERIAN Born 1885. Resided on the western side of the Assumption College. Passed ESLC from St. Ephrem's High School, Mannanam. During this period Joseph Podipara (later Rev. Dr. Placid) was his class mate. Next, he joined seminary along with Fr. Placid and studied for priesthood, but unfortunately due to illness he had to discontinue as a Decan. However, he continued his friendship with Fr. Placid and frequently met him at Chettipuzha Monastry. This relation continued even when Fr. Placid was in Rome for long periods or in the native place. After discontinuing from seminary, Cheriachan, like his brother, joined St. Joseph's -79- College, Trichinoppally for the Intermediate course. On return, he entered family life and was engaged in farming. He also ran a large shop in front of S.B. College dealing in textiles, sports goods, and books. It continued for a long period. Mean- while he set up two hostels “Assissi” and “Fieldvilla” for S.B. College students. Cheriachan was also interested in public affairs. He was twice elected Munici- pal Councillor and served two full terms. Being a good badminton player, he won trophies from many tournaments. Cheriachan was humble, gentle, and a philan- thropist. He married Claramma, daughter of Paylo, Chiracadavu family, Thuruthy. Claramma died at the age of 45. Children: Four sons and three daughters. Ex- pired on 14.11.1978. II A5 B5 f MARIAMMA Married to eye-specialist, Thomachen, Vadakkummurry. She also learned oph- thalmic treatment from Thomachen. II A5 B6 f THRESIAMMA (Tharuthi) Married to Kuriachen, Kallukulam (Vazhappally Marattukalam), Vazhappally. II A5 B7 f ANNAMMA Married to Ittirachen, Kavalam Puthuparambil family, Vadakkekkara. -:oOo:- II A1 B1 C1 KURUVILLA (Kuttiappan) Born 1904. Originally resided at Changanacherry Kavala, where he ran egg and ayurvedic herbal business. Later he disposed off the properties at Kavala and lived with his brother residing at Thengana. He married Annamma, daughter of Outhachen, Kuzhimannil, Naludkodi. Children: three sons and four daughters. Died on 28.1.1992. II A1 B1 C2 THOMAS (Kunjommachan) Born 1911. Being a bachelor he lived with his brothers and was a partner to their enterprises. He was very popular among the people of Changanacherry espe- cially those at Kavala. He lived in harmony with his brothers and was an inti- mate friend to all those who got acquainted with him. Died on 19.3. 1985. II A1 B1 C3 CHERIAN Born 1914. He also lived with his brothers. He was a bus employee and a bus agent. Like his elder brother he was also popular and a good friend to people at Kavala in particular. Married from Peedika family, Athirampuzha. Died on 22.10.1985. II A1 B1 C4 f MARIAMMA -80- Married to Thomachy of Mukkada family, Kurumbanadom. II A1 B1 C5 f ANNAMMA Married to Varghese, Kathala family, Edathua. II A1 B1 C6 f ALIKUTTY Married to Varghese, Kondody family, Thottacadu. II A1 B1 C7 f KUNJAMMA Married to Papachen, Chelathuparambil House, Thathampally, Alapuzha. -:oOo:- II A3 B1 C1 CHERIAN (Kunjappan) Born 1910. Residence west of Changanacherry Kavala. He was mainly a dealer in automobiles and perhaps the first person in Changanacherry who owned a taxi car.
