SShheeeeddyy’’ss MMeenn MMuunnsstteerr’’ss KKiinnggss Part one Issue 11 July 13th 2009 photo; SPORTSFILE EDITORIAL COMMENT Issue 11 July 13th 2009 p 2 Hello Hurling Fans, With the Munster Final, the 2 qualifiers, the Christy Ring, Nicky Rackard and Lory Meagher Cup Finals along with a special interview with one of the greatest living legends of the game Micky ‘The Rattler’ Byrne we are diving this week’s issue into 2 PDF’s. In that way we can keep the resolution of the photos high and the size of both sections will be less than one megabyte. Part one is the magazine section and part two is the weekend roundup. The three Cup Finals in Croke Park provided some fine hurling but the crowd was just under 4,000 so it is probably back to the drawing board for those finals. Each needs to be played as a curtain raiser to a game from the Liam McCarthy Championship to create the right atmosphere. The Munster Final had patches of fine hurling and some fine individual displays but lacked the intensity of former classics. Both teams Tipperary and Waterford are continu - ing to make progress. Tipperary still look the best challenger to the champions but Wa - terford battled with heart and could yet make a final four berth. Best wishes ‘til next week from Hurling World. FEATURE Mickey ‘The Rattler’Byrne Issue 11 July 13th 2009 p 3 Rattle ‘em Mickey! Mickey ‘The Rattler’ Byrne from Thurles Sarsfields, held down the right fullback position for Tipperary for 12 championship seasons between 1949 and 1960 and was a substitute on the All-Ireland winning team of 1945.

  • Annagh 2005, the Twenty-Eighth Issue of the Ballyhaunis Tparish Magazine
Christmas Greetings t seems such a short year since last Christmas and yet we are moving fast towards the IChristmas season again. The year gone by has been a year of high drama, beginning with the awful tsunami tragedy on St. Stephen’s Day. This has been followed by all the other tragedies of the year, the hurricanes in the US, the terrors in Baghdad, the earthquake in Pakistan and many more. I suppose one event that will always stand out in the minds of Catholics was the death of our late Holy Father, Pope John Paul II. His final illness and death brought home to us how he dignified pain and suffering by his endurance and acceptance. His funeral captured the attention of the world because he was respected by world leaders everywhere for standing up for what he believed. Then we had the election of Pope Benedict XVI and a new era in the church began. It is our prayer that the coming year will be a better year, that peace will take the place of war and violence around the world, and that people everywhere will escape natural disasters and flu pandemics. As always, I avail of the pages of Annagh Magazine to wish you all, on my own behalf and on behalf of Fr. Burke, a very happy and holy Christmas and every blessing and every happiness in the New Year. Wherever you are, at home or abroad, you will be remembered in our Masses on Christmas Day. Joseph Cooney Canon Joseph Cooney, P.P. and Fr.

This year our Senior Championship was played on a new (or was it the old) system and it proved to be a great success, bringing great freshness and a renewed interest in hurling to the Division. We were treated to a number of very close enjoyable games, culminating in taday's unique final pairing of Burgess and Kildangan. Both of these team have come from Intermediate ranks as recently as 2004 and 2005 so a new Club name will be inscribed on to the Frank McGrath Cup in 2008. Kildangan's two previous successes were before the present Trophy came into being in 1962. With little form to go on, 1 look forward to a cracking, sporting game and I wish both learns the best 01 luck.

Carrigtwohill Community News Issue 17 Summer 2011 Summer 2011 Carrigtwohill Community News 1 Cork County Council Staff Changes Recently Cork County Council made a number of personel changes that affect the Carrigtwohill area. Jerome O’Brien was manager of the Civic Amenity site in Rossmore. While no one welcomes the idea of a “dump” in their backyard Jerome did his best to make the facility as unobtrusive as possible to the residents of the area. Over the years he has endeavoured to assist the community in many ways. An example of this would be his attempts to keep the approach roads to Rossmore litter free. Another example would be, in 2009, when 240 people took part in the community Spring Clean he allowed the Community Council to take the massive amount of rubbish collected to the site at Rossmore. His help and advice will be sorely missed and we wish him the very best in his new position. We welcome Dave Clarke as the new Area Engineer with responsibility for the Carrigtwohill area. From a community development point of view a supportive Area Engineer is vital to Carrigtwohill. We look forward to a successful and fruitful relationship with him. In a changed environment we all realise that public money is not as readily available as before. However, with the encouragement and moral support of the Area Engineer allied to our own hard work, we can achieve much. The new engineer replaces Mr. Michael Savage. I was born at Gurraneredmond, Donoughmore, on 10th October, 1893. I was educated at Stuake National School until I was about 15 years of age, when I went to work as a farm labourer in my home district. Donoughmore Company of the Irish Volunteers was organised by Patrick Looney, Meenachonee, in the first week of October, 1915. Eighteen men joined at the start. Training instructions were given by Pat. Higgins of Cork after Stuake Mass. The company held regular weekly parades after that, and additional members joined its ranks. Instruction in drill was given by me, taken from a British Infantry Training Manual. The first public parade of the company outside its own area took place in November, 1915. It was to the Manchester Martyrs Commemoration parade in Cork City. Thirty men from the company took part in it. Later we held parades to Peake, Rylane, Nadd and Ahabullogue, with the result that other companies were formed in these places. The weekly parades were continued. The men paid a regular weekly subscription, and out of this fund we purchased a miniature rifle which was used for target practice.
