Meath Mosney is a town in County Meath, 48km from Dublin, although most of the closest services are found in neighbouring County Louth. County Meath is in the province of Leinster and is part of the Mid-East Region of Ireland. It has a population of around 195,000 people. The county town of Meath is Navan, where the county hall and government are located, although Trim, the former county town, has historical significance and remains a sitting place of the court. The county is also known by the nickname “The Royal County”, because of its history as the seat of the High King of Ireland in ancient times. Meath’s GAA teams are also nicknamed “The Royals”.     1.1 EMPLOYMENT SECTORS To realise the economic potential of the Gateway and identified strategic employment centres, the RPGs indicates that sectoral strengths need be developed and promoted. In this regard, a number of thematic development areas have been identified, the core of which are pivoted around the main growth settlements. Food, Tourism, Services, Manufacturing and Agriculture appear as the primary sectors being proffered for Meath noting that Life Sciences, ICT and Services are proffered along the M4 corridor to the south and Aviation and Logistics to the M1 Corridor to the east. However, Ireland’s top 2 exports in 2010, medical and pharmaceutical products and organic chemicals, accounted for 59% of merchandise exports by commodity group. It is considered, for example, that Navan should be promoted for medical products noting the success of Welch Allyn in particular. An analysis has been carried out by the Planning Department which examined the individual employment sectors which are presently in the county and identified certain sectoral convergences (Appendix A). This basis of this analysis was the 2011 commercial rates levied against individual premises (top 120 rated commercial premises). The analysis excluded hotels, retail, public utilities public administration (Meath County Council, OPW Trim and other decentralized Government Departments) along with the HSE NE, which includes Navan Hospital. The findings of this analysis were as follows: • Financial Services – Navan & Drogheda (essentially IDA Business Parks & Southgate Centre). • Industrial Offices / Call Centres / Headquarters – Navan, Bracetown (Clonee) & Duleek. • Food and Meath Processing – Navan, Clonee and various rural locations throughout county. • Manufacturing – Oldcastle and Kells would have a particular concentrations noting that a number of those with addresses in Oldcastle are in the surrounding rural area.

    50 Mary Battersby, A Regency Artist from County Meath Although little is known of Mary Battersby’s life, recent scholarship has begun to acknowledge her talent and to re-evaluate her position within the canon of Irish artists. Anne Crookshank and the Knight of Glin, who were the first to research her oeuvre, drew attention to the brilliance of her use of colour, a quality which the fine state of preservation of the drawings included for sale here, only serves to emphasise. While scholars, notably Eimear O’Connor, have recognised her significance, as a marginalised Irish woman artist, the art market has not had the chance to appreciate Battersby’s art, as, apart from the collection offered here, all of her extant work is contained in six albums split between the National Library of Ireland and the Ulster Museum. Her extreme rarity was forcibly asserted by Dr O’Connor - ‘it seems that there is no other work in existence by this woman’; in this context the discovery of an additional thirty-five works by the artist is an important milestone. Battersby was active in Dublin, Belfast and her native County Meath in the first four decades of the nine- teenth century. Although containing work dated as early as 1801, the albums now in the National Library were donated to the Royal Dublin Society in 1820 and 1836 while an album of paintings and flowers in the Ulster Museum is also dated 1836. In an inscription in this album she gives her address as Mountjoy Square, Dublin while in a letter of the same year she describes the three albums given to the RDS as ‘Drawings from a collec- tion of birds shot in Pennsylvania, North America, by Robert Battersby Esq.
