Natasha King designed and executed the mural, which received some funding from the Franklin Local Board for materials. Members of Kawakawa Bay’s Weka Watch group helped with some of the ini- tial large scale painting, but left the finer details up to Natasha. Natasha says it is the first mural she has worked on. “The majority of my work is generally on canvas or perspex, so this was an eye opening experience for me. “The inspiration for the weka mural came from wanting to give weka a voice to warn the public about watching out for them on the roads and to take care when travelling through the Bay. I wanted the floral segment, which is the centrepiece of the mural to appear like a visual sound of the weka calling out to the public to convey this message.”
Our Lady Star of the Sea Artist Natasha King hopes her mural will inspire the public to get on board with helping support Weka Watch in their efforts to monitor, preserve and increase weka numbers in the Kawakawa Bay area.
