A Window to the Soul How Reflection Deepens Service
Saint Joseph’s University, Spring 2009 A Window to the Soul How Reflection Deepens Service Sr. Mary Scullion, R.S.M. ’76 Take Our Pop Quiz! Arrupe Center Execs Expose Brings Them H.O.M.E. Ethical Implications of Economic Crisis FROM THE PRESIDENT There is no question that the current global economic situation has affected all of us, as well as our loved ones, in real and palpable ways. Optimistic headlines seem infrequent, and many of us face significant financial challenges. At Saint Joseph’s, these are trying times as well, and it is important that we remain true to our core mission as a Catholic and Jesuit university. Our highest priority remains providing an excellent educational experience for our students as we work to manage our expenses without jeopardizing any of our programs. Recently released statistics related to the state of higher education in our country are alarming. A report from the College Board’s Commission on Access, Admissions and Success in Higher Education discloses the startling decline of educational attainment in the United States. According to this study, our nation’s college completion rates have plummeted. Though we were once ranked second in the world for workers aged 25 – 34 with advanced degrees, we now rank 11th. America is in danger of losing its place as a world leader in education. Now, more than ever, given the extreme economic environment, it is essential that our country make a lasting commitment to educating those who are qualified. I am truly grateful to our alumni and benefactors who have taken a leadership role in support of Saint Joseph’s and especially thankful to those who continue to do so during these difficult economic times. -

July 2016 Message from Anne Blackburn
JULY 2016 MESSAGE FROM ANNE BLACKBURN - MOYER FOUNDATION BOARD MEMBER Summer is a wonderful time to get together with family and friends for so many reasons: holidays, graduations, showers and just for some old fashioned backyard barbecues. The summer is also the height of camp season at The Moyer Foundation - a humbling reminder of the thousands of children and families in our country affected by grief and addiction. When my husband turned 50, we wanted to combine celebrating with our family and friends with our passion for Anne and her nephew pictured helping children and so the first-ever Camp at a family camp out many years ago - experiences in his Out for Kids was launched. It was easy, it was life are her inspiration for fun and it made a difference. supporting The Moyer Foundation. In June, the Philadelphia Office of Goldman Sachs held its 4th annual Camp Out for Kids fundraiser in support of The Moyer Foundation. Teams competed in Olympic style games and took time to get creative while crafting backpacks for Camp Erin and Camp Mariposa campers attending in the Philadelphia area. Almost every family has a connection to the mission either through their experience with grief or facing the epidemic of addiction. In our family, we've been touched by both. Hosting a Camp Out each year is important to me because I've seen first-hand the impact on a child's life when they don't get the right support early enough; it truly turns into a life-long mission of healing. If you're interested in hosting a Camp Out for Kids or other fundraising event with your co- workers, friends or family in support of The Moyer Foundation, contact Rachel Amato at [email protected] or (267) 687- 7724. -

Charlie Manuel has become part of their group. When the Phillies beat the Colorado Rockies at the end of July, Manuel became the fourth manager in Phillies history to lead the club to 500 wins. In so doing, Manuel joined Gene Mauch (646 wins), Harry Wright (636), and Danny Ozark (594) as Phillies skippers who have won 500 or more games. Manuel achieved his lofty status faster than the other three. He did it midway through his sixth season, just 16 days before Ozark won his 500th. Mauch, the Phillies' skipper from 1960-68, reached the milestone in his seventh season, while Wright (1884-93), managing in seasons when the schedules were considerably shorter, took nine years to get there. Now 66 and the oldest manager in team history, Manuel has led the Phillies to levels none of the other three ever did. His Phillies have gone to the World Series twice, and he is the only manager whose teams have posted 85 or more wins five straight years.
