The Early Evolutionary History of Belemnites: New Data from Japan Yasuhiro Iba1*, Shin-ichi Sano2,Jo¨ rg Mutterlose3 1 Department of Natural History Sciences, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, 2 Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, Katsuyama, Japan, 3 Institute of Geology, Mineralogy and Geophysics, Ruhr-University Bochum, Bochum, Germany Abstract Belemnites (Order Belemnitida), a very successful group of Mesozoic coleoid cephalopods, dominated the world’s oceans throughout the Jurassic and Cretaceous. According to the current view, the phylogenetically earliest belemnites are known from the lowermost Jurassic (Hettangian, 201–199 Ma) of northern Europe. They are of low diversity and have small sized rostra without clear grooves. Their distribution is restricted to this area until the Pliensbachian (191–183 Ma). Here we describe two new belemnite taxa of the Suborder Belemnitina from the Sinemurian (199–191 Ma) of Japan: Nipponoteuthis katana gen et sp. nov., which represents the new family Nipponoteuthidae, and Eocylindroteuthis (?) yokoyamai sp. nov. This is the first reliable report of Sinemurian belemnites outside of Europe and the earliest record of typical forms of Belemnitina in the world. The Sinemurian belemnites from Japan have small to large rostra with one deep and long apical groove. Morphologically these forms are completely different from coeval European genera of Hettangian–Sinemurian age. These new findings suggest that three groups of Belemnitina existed in the Hettangian–Sinemurian: 1) European small forms, 2) Japanese very large forms, and 3) the typical forms with a distinctive apical groove, reported here. The Suborder Belemnitina therefore did not necessarily originate in the Hettangian of northern Europe. The new material from Japan documents that the suborder Belemnitina had a much higher diversity in the early Jurassic than previously thought, and it also shows strong endemisms from the Sinemurian onwards. -

Signed ____________________________________ Date ____________________________________ 2 Abstract This PhD project contains two related parts, both linked by a study of belemnites. The first part is to test the validity and quality of belemnite palaeo-environmental proxies, and the second to investigate the feasibility of U-Pb dating of Mesozoic carbonates. In the first part, a wide range of well-preserved Mesozoic belemnites was analyzed for bulk stable isotope and trace element compositions, so as to access species- specific effects on compositions and to evaluate belemnite palaeo-proxies (notably δ18O, δ13C, Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca) as palaeo-temperature indicators. Then, high- resolution profiles of trace elements (Mg, Ca, Sr, Na, etc.) were obtained from those best-preserved specimens by electron microprobe and laser ablation-ICP-MS, and compared with the bulk analysis for a better understanding of intro-rostral variations. Results of four different belemnite polulations with differing ages and from differing stratigraphic levels show that Mg/Ca ratios in bulk analysis neither correlate with δ18O within one single species nor within one belemnite population. Mg/Ca is therefore not considered as a palaeo-temperature indicator for belemnites. -

The Belemnite Family Holcobelidae (Coleoidea) in the European Jurassic: Systematics, Biostratigraphy, Palaeobiogeography and Evolutionary Trends
Palaeodiversity 5: 13–49; Stuttgart, 30 December 2012. 13 The belemnite family Holcobelidae (Coleoidea) in the European Jurassic: systematics, biostratigraphy, palaeobiogeography and evolutionary trends ROBERT WEIS, NINO MARIOTTI & WOLFGANG RIEGRAF Abstract The belemnite family Holcobelidae GUSTOMESOV, 1977 is revised, based on ca. 200 rostra from recent fieldwork as well as historical museum collections. The studied specimens originate from various European localities and are dated from the Early Aalenian to the Early Bajocian (Middle Jurassic). Eight species of the genera Holcobelus STOLLEY, 1927 (including H. elmii n. sp.) and Calabribelus n. gen. (with type species C. pallinii) are described. The evolution of the morphological characters at the family level is outlined and compared with acrocoelitids (Belemnitina) and pachybelemnopseids (Pachybelemnopseina); the possible phylogenetic links between the Holcobelidae and the latter are discussed. The stratigraphic and palaeobiogeographic distribution of holcobelids is analysed in respect to morpho- logical changes, leading to a hypothesis on different lifestyles among the investigated taxa. The peculiar distribution pattern of Holcobelidae represents a colonization event by belemnites in the northern Tethys and a distinctive belem- nitid Tethyan fauna developed during the Bajocian, dominated by Pachybelemnopsis and Hibolithes.
