Jewish Perspectives on Reproductive Realities By Rabbi Lori Koffman, NCJW Board Director and Chair of NCJW’s Reproductive Health, Rights and Justice Initiative A note on the content below: We acknowledge that this document invokes heavily gendered language due to the prevailing historic male voices in Jewish rabbinic and biblical perspectives, and the fact that Hebrew (the language in which these laws originated) is a gendered language. We also recognize some of these perspectives might be in contradiction with one another and with some of NCJW’s approaches to the issues of reproductive health, rights, and justice. Background Family planning has been discussed in Judaism for several thousand years. From the earliest of the ‘sages’ until today, a range of opinions has existed — opinions which can be in tension with one another and are constantly evolving. Historically these discussions have assumed that sexual intimacy happens within the framework of heterosexual marriage. A few fundamental Jewish tenets underlie any discussion of Jewish views on reproductive realities. • Protecting an existing life is paramount, even when it means a Jew must violate the most sacred laws.1 • Judaism is decidedly ‘pro-natalist,’ and strongly encourages having children. The duty of procreation is based on one of the earliest and often repeated obligations of the Torah, ‘pru u’rvu’, 2 to be ‘fruitful and multiply.’ This fundamental obligation in the Jewish tradition is technically considered only to apply to males. Of course, Jewish attitudes toward procreation have not been shaped by Jewish law alone, but have been influenced by the historic communal trauma (such as the Holocaust) and the subsequent yearning of some Jews to rebuild community through Jewish population growth. -

ROBERTSON The development of assisted reproductive and genetic screening technologies has produced intense ethical, legal, and policy conflicts in many countries. This Article surveys the German and U.S. experience with abortion, assisted reproduction, embryonic stem cell research, therapeutic cloning, and preimplantation genetic diagnosis. This exercise in comparative bioethics shows that although there is a wide degree of overlap in many areas, important policy differences, especially over embryo and fetal status, directly affect infertile and at-risk couples. This Article analyzes those differences and their likely impact on future reception of biotechnological innovation in each country. EARLY MODERN WORKSHOP: Jewish History Resources Volume 13: History of Emotions/Emotions in History, Fordham University, New York, August 23- 24, 2016 “When Miriam heard Rabbi Shimon ben Shetah’s words she became very scared”: Emotions in the Conception Narrative of a Judaeo-Arabic Version of Toledot Yeshu Sarit Kattan Gribetz, Fordham University Introduction In 826 C.E., Agobard, bishop of Lyon, published a treatise entitled De Judaicis superstitionibus, detailing and ridiculing the ‘superstitions’ of the Jews. Within his missive, Agobard describes the tales that the Jews tell about Jesus. The details Agobard recounts make clear that the bishop is referring to a medieval Jewish parody of the story of Jesus’ life, known as Toledot Yeshu (Life of Jesus), composed in Aramaic sometime before the second half of the eighth century and later translated into Hebrew. Agobard’s successor, Amulo, also quotes Toledot Yeshu in his theological treatise of 846, Contra Iudaeos, and the Catalan Dominican Ramón Martí cites long passages of Toledot Yeshu in Latin and Hebrew in his anti-Jewish polemic Pugio fidei in 1278. The inquisitorial dossier of a Jewish convert named Pere in the fourteenth-century Crown of Aragon recounts another version of the text along with vivid descriptions of how this story of Jesus’ life was told in the kitchen of a Jewish home in the Aragonese village of La Almunia de Doña Godina to try to re-Judaize the recent apostate. The text of Toledot Yeshu is found in a seventeenth-century prayer book from Yemen, and, in addition to Aramaic and Hebrew, manuscripts of the text are preserved in Judaeo-Arabic, Judaeo-Persian, Ladino, Yiddish, and other languages. -

Oral Tradition, 14/1 (1999): 140-274 Jewish Folk Literature Dan Ben-Amos For Batsheva Four interrelated qualities distinguish Jewish folk literature: (a) historical depth, (b) continuous interdependence between orality and literacy, (c) national dispersion, and (d) linguistic diversity. In spite of these diverging factors, the folklore of most Jewish communities clearly shares a number of features. The Jews, as a people, maintain a collective memory that extends well into the second millennium BCE. Although literacy undoubtedly figured in the preservation of the Jewish cultural heritage to a great extent, at each period it was complemented by orality. The reciprocal relations between the two thus enlarged the thematic, formal, and social bases of Jewish folklore. The dispersion of the Jews among the nations through forced exiles and natural migrations further expanded the themes and forms of their folklore. In most countries Jews developed new languages in which they spoke, performed, and later wrote down their folklore. As a people living in diaspora, Jews incorporated the folklore of other nations while simultaneously spreading their own internationally known themes among the same nations. Although this reciprocal process is basic to the transmission of folklore among all nations, it occurred more intensely among the Jews, even when they lived in antiquity in the Land of Israel. Consequently there is no single period, no single country, nor any single language that can claim to represent the authentic composite Jewish folklore. The earliest known periods of Jewish folklore are no more genuine, in fact, than the later periods, with the result that no specific Jewish ethnic group’s traditions can be considered more ancient or more JEWISH FOLK LITERATURE 141 authentic than those of any of the others.1 The Biblical and Post-Biblical Periods Folklore in the Hebrew Bible Descriptions of Storytelling and Singing The Hebrew Bible describes both the spontaneous and the institutionalized commemoration of historical events. -

PHARMACOLOGY AND DIETETICS IN THE BIBLE AND TALMUD FRED ROSNER Introduction In his classic book on biblical and talmudic medicine, Julius Preuss devotes an entire chapter to materia medica and another chapter to dietetics, thereby accentuating the importance of these topics in Jewish antiquity and the middle ages. 1 Since numerous volumes could be written on either of these two vast subjects, this essay confines itself primarily to presentations of two examples of each topic. In regard to pharmacology in the Bible and Talmud, the famous balm of Gilead and the equally renowned biblical mandrakes will be discussed. As examples of dietetics, classic Jewish sources dealing with dairy products as well as chicken soup, the Jewish penicillin, will be cited. Pharmacology in Bible and Talmud One must be extremely careful in describing the pharmacology of antiquity. The entire system of dispensing drugs today is much simpler and more precise than even only a few decades ago. One need only compare the list of ingredients or length of prescriptions of one hundred years ago to a modern prescription. Medications described in the Bible and Talmud are mostly derived from the flora. However, numerous animal remedies were known to the talmudic Sages. For example, although honey was used to revive a person who fainted (? hypoglycemia), eating honey was thought to be harmful for wound healing. 2 A person with pain in the heart should suck goat's milk directly from the udder of the animal. 3 Someone bitten by a dog was given liver from that dog to eat4 as recommended by physicians in antiquity, perhaps an early form of immunotherapy.
