    NCPF Annuals Competition 2020 Results We are pleased to announce that the results of the 2020 NCPF Annuals Competition are now available for publication. General All Print sections of this year’s competition were sadly cancelled due to the Covid 19 Pandemic. The PDI sections went ahead & were judGed remotely. (many thanks for the co- operation of all the judges / selectors involved) For the purposes of transparency an outline of how this process was conducted is outlined below. Members from 32 NCPF clubs entered work into this year’s Myles Audas PDI competition, there were a total of 885 imaGes submitted into the open section & 103 into the Jane Black Trophy for beGinners. 27 clubs competed for the Myles Audas Memorial Trophy. Alliance Entry Whilst judGinG of the competition was underway the PAGB gave notification that all PAGB inter-federation competitions for 2020 were to be cancelled, again due to Covid 19. It was decided however that selection of the Alliance entry would still proceed to enable the production of the Alliance & Portfolio presentations the NCPF make available each year. It was also felt that authors who had produced work deemed suitable for selection as an Alliance entry should receive recoGnition for the hiGh standard achieved. Awards & Alliance / Portfolio Presentations Due to the cancellation of the print sections far fewer images are available to incorporate into the presentations this year, it was therefore decided that all imaGes from Awards / Alliance & Portfolio should be used to produce one inclusive presentation instead of the usual 2 presentations which normally consist of 1 Awards & Alliance presentation and 1 Selectors Choice Portfolio presentation.

"DEFORE we leave the Mersey estuary, a word or two about -^-* the lightships may not be out of place. The earliest reference that I have found to a lightship per se, is the resolution passed by the Liverpool Council in 1759, to fix a vessel with two lights at the N.E. spit of the Hoyle Bank, " which will tend greatly to the preservation of lives and property, and hope it may induce our captains and masters to inform themselves how to bring a vessel into the Hoyle Lake, without, as was formerly the case, trusting to the chance of meeting a pilot." Twenty years earlier (1738), there is a resolution of the Cor­ poration " that an addition be made to the present dock, or basin, for light ships to lie in, whilst refitting . ." but this I take to mean ships which had discharged their cargo, and were " light." By 1811, the Mersey was beginning to be used by ships, in preference to the Hoyle Lake, and the mariners bringing ships into the port after dark had to rely on five lighthouses, viz. Pt. Lynas, Upper and Lower Hoylake, Leasowe, and Bidston. Some of the leading shipowners of Liverpool petitioned the Dock Committee to replace the North West Buoy by a lightship, as there were as yet no lighted buoys. The Dock Committee, having an act (53 George III) which empowered them to place a lightship on the N.W.

    This book is the first of two volumes covering the Wallasey Police and Fire Brigade. It concentrates on the history of the Wallasey Police whilst the second volume is focused on the Fire Brigade. However there is much of Police interest in the second volume as many officers were also Firemen – the Fire Bobbies. The Museum of Policing in Cheshire is grateful to the author, Noel E. Smith for the extensive research he has undertaken in writing these books and for his permission to reproduce them here. Dedication These two volumes are dedicated to all the members of the Old Wallasey Borough Police and Wallasey Borough Fire Brigade.     New Brighton Lighthouse North Wirral Coastal Park

    New Brighton Lighthouse The Lighthouse at New Brighton is also known as the Perch Rock Lighthouse, and is situated where the Mersey Estuary opens out into Liverpool Bay. Before the lighthouse was built there was a wooden ’perch’ erected upon the rock, formerly known as the Black Rock, by the city of Liverpool in 1683. The rock was a serious hazard to navigation because of its close proximity to the North Channel which was once the main channel used by shipping on the approach to the Port of Liverpool. Ships that passed the perch were charged 6d for maintenance costs, which were high in this case, the perch often being washed away by gales. In 1821 one of the Liverpool Pilot Boats crashed into the perch. Building was started on the lighthouse in 1827 and it took 3 years to complete. The first stone was laid by Thomas Littledale, the Mayor of Liverpool, on the 8th June 1927. The lighthouse was built by Tomkinson and Company, to a similar design as the famous Eddystone Lighthouse of Plymouth, using granite quarried on the Island of Anglesey. Each stone was carved to interlock with its neighbor, and the whole lot was cemented together using ’Puzzellani’ a substance derived from volcanic ash from Mount Etna in Sicily. The tower rises 90 feet above the rock, the first half of which is solid. To gain access when the tide is out one needs a ladder to reach up to the first of the 15 iron rungs built in to the side of the tower, these then lead up to the door.

    9 Wirral Historic Character - Analysis 9.1 Field System Broad Type The results for Wirral relate to the MHCP Study Area (see section 8.2 maps). This excluded the rural area (essentially the central and mid-west greenbelt) that was characterised by the Cheshire Historic Landscape Characterisation Project (Cheshire County Council, 2007). The MHCP survey therefore only recorded those extant fields that fell within the urban MHCP Study Area. Further information regarding Field System can be found in the recent Wirral Landscape Character Assessment undertaken by Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council (2009). About 0.27% (approximately 23.6 ha) of the Wirral MHCP Study Area has been classified as Field System Broad Type– the majority of extant Field System can be found in the central part of the Wirral Peninsula. The survey only recorded the shape and size attributes of Field System within the Wirral MHCP Study Area. The MHCP did not further define field types or possible origins. Further and more detailed research is required to match that carried out for the ‘greenbelt’ area covered in Wirral by the the Cheshire HLC. It must be noted that periods of origin assigned to areas of fields during the course of the MHCP are based on intuition and the interpretation of enclosure patterns shown on 19th century and later mapping and do not constitute a detailed or definitive study. The current agricultural landscape is a product of an often complex evolution. In the 19th century in particular large areas of the landscape were remodelled, fields were enlarged and boundaries straightened. However, as a general rule: • The smaller and more irregular the field, the more likely that it has medieval or post-medieval origins (as piecemeal enclosure).
