The Kantian problem of articulating the “origin” of knowledge was also at the core of Foucault’s oeuvre. The dissertation derives a concept, here- elsewhere, from its analysis of The Order of Things to argue that here-elsewhere addresses the problem at hand via articulating the difference and the sameness that spans the Kantian continuum of I-Other. It denotes the continuum as a relative spatio-temporality with a vector, which reflects Foucault’s interest in the modern physics. As a realist and critical concept, here- elsewhere reaches the core of Nietzschean philosophy, addressing the limits in deconstructive practice by articulating critical practice as vectorial. Foucault, then, aims to transvalue our nihilistic reality via a confessional discourse along the I-Other continuum. Thus, the politics of contemporary literature lies in the experience of the Other directly addressing me. In this light, literature can illuminate the politics of our realities via here-elsewhere, as I demonstrate in my reading of A Gesture Life. Also, literary experience as articulated by writers such as Orhan Pamuk suggests possibilities for literary theory to enlighten, and constitute, the theory of the real. iv Acknowledgement It took a long time, a lot of trials and errors, and the support of loving people for me to settle in where I should be and to begin working on this project in earnest. Most of all, I thank my dissertation advisor, Ammiel Alcalay, for being and remaining who he is; it made it easy for him to listen to me and agree to be my advisor and stay with me throughout the process. It is as if the words are there for us, speaking out loud what has been hidden in our minds. Yet the current literary studies do not theoretically validate the possibility of anyone’s knowing what a text tells us. The most precious conviction about a protagonist, which functions as the practical ground for our scholarship about why literature matters, can only be presented as a thesis that, at the end of the day, remains an opinion. This situation, in fact, applies to the current academic practice at large; while we continue to produce scholarly results on cultures, societies and politics of our interest, we cannot claim to know them as realities. If anything, we claim that any possibility of attaining such a knowledge escapes us; the articulation of reality always gets ascribed to the ineluctable Other. Thus, however strong a sense of solidarity with Others our investigations are based on, however crucial stakes our research might have on our shared lives, the academia cannot counter anyone’s suggestion that he disagrees.

As rock journalism evolved in the 1960s and 1970s, so did two dismissive and misogynistic stereotypes about female fans: groupies and teenyboppers (Coates, 2003). While groupies were scorned in rock circles for their perceived hypersexuality, teenyboppers, who we can consider an umbrella term including boy band fanbases, were defined by a lack of sexuality and viewed as shallow, immature and prone to hysteria, and ridiculed as hall markers of bad taste, despite being driving forces in commercial markets (Ewens, 2020; Sherman, 2020). Similarly, boy bands have been disdained for their perceived femininity and viewed as inauthentic compared to “real” artists— namely, hypermasculine male rock artists. While the boy band genre has evolved and experienced different eras, depictions of both the bands and their fans have stagnated in media, relying on these old stereotypes (Duffett, 2012). This paper aimed to investigate to what extent modern boy bands are portrayed differently from non-boy bands in music journalism through a quantitative content analysis coding articles for certain tropes and themes.

    Erev Rosh HaShanah 5776 From the Place We are Right: Iran, the Jewish Community, & Healthy Dialogue Rabbi Michael Adam Latz Shir Tikvah Congregation 1 Tishrei 5776/13 September 2015 The Place Where We Are Right by Yehuda Amichai From the place where we are right Flowers will never grow In the spring. The place where we are right Is hard and trampled Like a yard. But doubts and loves Dig up the world Like a mole, a plow. And a whisper will be heard in the place Where the ruined House once stood. This week, the United States Congress is debating the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the international agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, known as ‘‘The Iran Deal.’’ It was signed in Vienna on July 14 by the United States along with China, France, Russia, Britain, Germany, and the European Union. The deal essentially incapacitates Iran’s ability to make a nuclear bomb in the next 15 years in exchange for lifting of economic sanctions that have devastated the Iranian economy. Because of the ways the Senate rules work, there are not enough votes to overturn a Presidential veto. The Iran Deal is a done deal. [http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/03/31/world/middleeast/simple-guide- nuclear-talks-iran-us.html?_r=1] I believe this is worth our consideration as we celebrate Rosh HaShanah, in part, because the discourse this summer among members of our broader Jewish community------and, sadly, many umbrella communal organizations------was rank with vitriol and animus; and there is, likely, a need for some collective t’shuvah to begin the year with as much love and compassion as we can muster.
