Malhamdale and Southern/South Western Dales Fringes + Physical Influences Malhamdale The landscape of Malhamdale is dominated by the influence of limestone, and includes some of the most spectacular examples of this type of scenery within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and within the United Kingdom as a whole. Great Scar limestone dominates the scenery around Malham, attaining a thickness of over 200m. It was formed in the Carboniferous period, some 330 million years ago, by the slow deposition of shell debris and chemical precipitates on the floor of a shallow tropical sea. The presence of faultlines creates dramatic variations in the scenery. South of Malham Tarn is the North Craven Fault, and Malham Cove and Gordale Scar, two miles to the south, were formed by the Mid Craven Fault. Easy erosion of the softer shale rocks to the south of the latter fault has created a sharp southern edge to the limestone plateau north of the fault. This step in the landscape was further developed by erosion during the various ice ages when glaciers flowing from the north deepened the basin where the tarn now stands and scoured the rock surface between the tarn and the village, leading later to the formation of limestone pavements. Glacial meltwater carved out the Watlowes dry valley above the cove. There are a number of theories as to the formation of the vertical wall of limestone that forms Malham Cove, whose origins appear to be in a combination of erosion by ice, water and underground water. It is thought that water pouring down the Watlowes valley would have cascaded over the cove and cut the waterfall back about 600 metres from the faultline, although this does not explain why the cove is wider than the valley above. -

RIVER QUALITY SURVEY NATIONAL RIVERS AUTHORITY NORTHUMBRIA & YORKSHIRE REGION GQA ASSESSMENT 1994 PART 1 REA CH CLASSIFICA TION FRESHWATER RIVERS AND CANALS VERSION 1: AUGUST 1995 GQA ASSESSMENT 1994 \ NORTHUMBRIA & YORKSHIRE REGION To allow the development of a National method of evaluating water quality, the rivers in all the NRA regions of England and Wales have been divided into reaches, which are numbered using a coding system based on the hydrological reference for each river basin. Each classified reach then has a chemistry sample point assigned to it and these sample points are regularly monitored for Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Dissolved oxygen (DO) and Total Ammonia. The summary statistics calculated from the results of this sampling are sent to a National Centre where the GQA Grades are calculated. A National report is produced and each region can then produce more detailed reports on the quality of their own rivers. For Northumbria and Yorkshire Region, this Regional Report has been divided into two parts. PARTI: REACH CLASSIFICATION This report contains a listing of the river reaches within the region, with their start and finish grid reference, approximate length, and the 1990 and 1994 GQA class for each reach. The reference code of the chemistry sample point used to classify the reach is also included. A sample point may classify several reaches if there are no major discharges or tributaries dividing those reaches. The sample point used to classify a reach may change and the classification is therefore calculated using the summary statistics for each sample point that has been used over the past three years. -

These are East areas that share similar landscape characteristics, and which follow natural lines in the landscape rather than administrative boundaries, making them a good Yorkshire decision-making framework for the natural environment. & The North Humber NCA profiles are guidance documents which can help communities to inform their West decision-making about the places that they live in and care for. The information they contain will support the planning of conservation initiatives at a landscape East scale, inform the delivery of Nature Improvement Areas and encourage broader Midlands partnership working through Local Nature Partnerships. The profiles will also help West Midlands to inform choices about how land is managed and can change. East of England Each profile includes a description of the natural and cultural features that shape our landscapes, how the landscape has changed over time, the current key London drivers for ongoing change, and a broad analysis of each area’s characteristics and ecosystem services. Statements of Environmental Opportunity (SEOs) are South East suggested, which draw on this integrated information. Project Proposal Amerdale Estate, River Skirfare & Cosh Beck September 2020 1.0 Introduction & Rationale The Amerdale Estate (Littondale) requested input from the Wild Trout Trust to assess issues and recommend solutions for habitat improvements along the uppermost reaches of the Skirfare and one of its major tributaries, Cosh Beck. This report was compiled by Prof Jonathan Grey from observations and discussions held during several site visits (including a rudimentary electric-fishing baseline survey) in late summer 2020. The waters of the Estate fall within the waterbody ‘Skirfare from source to Heselden Beck’; waterbody ID GB104027069250, Fig 1. The overall classification for the waterbody in 2019 under the EU Water Framework Directive was ‘Poor’ driven entirely by a failing in the biological quality element ‘Fish’. All other biological elements were at ‘High’ or ‘Good’. This is rather an anomaly as the Reason for Not Achieving Good status has been assigned to natural hydrology, presumably driven by the periodic retreat of short sections of the river below ground during dry spells. Quite how a natural reason can result in a failure is not entirely clear at present. Skinnerbum Road, Newcastle Business Park. Newcastle-Upon-Tyne NE4 7AR INTRODUCTION This document contains the derived General Quality Assessment (GQA) of the rivers in Dales Area for the year 1998. The grade is based on an amalgamation of three years data and thus reflects the river chemistry over the period 1996-8. The parameters used in the classification are Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Ammonia and a monitoring frequency of at least monthly is preferred. The GQA results have been calculated by the National Centre for Environmental Data and Surveillance at Twerton. There have been some discrepancies between their database of sites and ours, always a problem when such huge blocks of information are transmitted backwards and forwards. This resulted in no GQA grade being calculated for some sites. Where this has occurred I have filled in the missing grade by calculating it locally. In such circumstances this is identified by the grade being represented in lower case. You will notice that this document is slightly different to those produced in previous years in that it does not contain any maps. There are a number of reasons for this but primarily it was decided to disseminate the tabular information rapidly after it’s return from the national centre out to the areas and produce a more in depth analysis of the information later on in the year. -

National Character Area 21 Yorkshire Dales Summary The Yorkshire Dales is a large scale upland landscape of high moorland, dissected by often deep dales, which forms part of the Pennine uplands running up the centre of Northern England. It is separated from the North Pennines by the Stainmore Trough faults and from the more industrialised South Pennines by the Craven Faults. Just 0.3% of the area is urban, 4% is woodland, and 26% is upland grazing. 71% of the area falls within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and 17% within the Nidderdale AONB. 30% of the area is designated as SSSI.
