QSCCB awareness seminar discusses independence of the visually impaired QNA DOHA

QATAR Social and Cultural Center for the Blind (QSCCB), affiliated to the Ministry of Culture and Sports, has concluded its spring activities with a seminar on the independence of the blind, which is part of the centre’s quest to spread awareness among its blind and visually impaired members and to help them overcome the obstacles and difficulties faced by them. During the seminar, Professor Hussein Khalil, a member of the centre and director of the Foundation of Friends with Visual Im- pairment, introduced the white cane and its importance for the blind to the attendees and also explained the basis for selecting the ap- propriate stick for each blind. The white cane is a symbol of the inde- pendence of the unsighted and visually im- paired and a means to help the blind to know the variables around them, discover their surroundings and warn them of surprises. It also reminds us to exercise the manners in our dealings with the blind, by providing assistance to them and securing the road and giving them a chance to move around unhindered. During the seminar, the smart stick was introduced to participants. It differs from the conventional stick, being equipped with sensors that measure the distance and there is a vibration alert, which helps their user to know about and overcome obstacles before reaching them. Mohamed Bousharideh and Aythar Mo- hamed were honoured as distinguished mem- bers of 2018 during the event. BOOSTING PRIVACY FOUNDATIONS Asian LNG prices slide in well-supplied, quiet market REUTERS LONDON

ASIAN spot prices for liquefied natural gas (LNG) fell this week although few cargoes were heard to swap hands in a well- supplied market with some traders still on their New Year’s break. Spot prices for February de- livery to Asia were assessed at $8.75 per million British ther- mal units (mmBtu) compared to $9.10 last week, industry sources said, citing low liquid- ity as the reason for the fall. Trading activity started to rise towards the end of the week and was mainly focused on late January and February cargoes, with nothing yet heard for March volumes, traders said. Tumbling shipping char- ter rates, however, were expect- ed to boost liquidity next week, they said. Demand stayed low, with two buy tenders issued.
