Biogeographic relict, extinction risk, global warming, species richness, sub-alpine prairies Abstract. During the last few decades the tree line has shifted upward on Mediterranean mountains. This has resulted in a decrease in the area of the sub-alpine prairie habitat and an increase in the threat to strictly orophilous moths that occur there. This also occurred on the Pollino Massif due to the increase in temperature and decrease in rainfall in Southern Italy. We found that a number of moths present in the alpine prairie at 2000 m appear to be absent from similar habitats at 1500–1700 m. Some of these species are thought to be at the lower latitude margin of their range. Among them, Pareulype berberata and Entephria flavicinctata are esti- mated to be the most threatened because their populations are isolated and seem to be small in size. The tops of these mountains are inhabited by specialized moth communities, which are strikingly different from those at lower altitudes on the same massif further south. The majority of the species recorded in the sub-alpine prairies studied occur most frequently and abundantly in the core area of the Pollino Massif. -
Bulgaria's Pirin Mountains
The Pirin Mountains, Bulgaria ABODE OF THE THUNDER GOD 13th - 27th June Introduction The YRC meet to Bulgaria came about after a chance communication from Lizzie Alderson, who runs Pirin Adventures, a company which provides mountaineering, trekking and walking holidays in the Pirin Mountains of Bulgaria. Further conversations with Lizzie in Leeds and some research on the internet confirmed that it would be a novel and extremely interesting location for an overseas meet, with plenty of scope for a fortnight’s hut-to-hut trekking, taking in ridges and summits as we pleased. Named after Perun, the Thracian god of thunder and lightning, the Pirin Mountains are crystalline and located in southwest Bulgaria within the western part of the Rila-Rhodope massif. The Pirin massif slopes southwards and has a width of 30-35km. The main axis is oriented NW-SE with an approximate length of 70km. The northern part of the range comprises the Pirin National Park of 232 square kilometres, which has UNESCO status. The geology is complex but the mountain ridges are mostly granite. The Koncheto ridge and its continuation over Kutelo and Vihren summits are different and comprise marbleised karst with remains of the granite intrusion and some limestone. Limestone is also present around Mt Orelyak to the east. There are over 180 glacial tarns and lakes in Pirin. The Alpine zone scree and rocks are replaced by sub-alpine meadow-bush areas around 2300m and mountain forest between 1000-2000m. This ecological diversity was enhanced by the rapidly ablating snowfields present in June, providing us with an amazing display of flora and fauna. -

Due to our current studieswe may add nineteennew speciesto the bug fauna of the region and confirm the existenceof eighteenpreviously mentionedspecies. The thirty-sevenspecies found by us are representedby 1048 collectedsamples belongingto the following taxonomiccategories/orders: Hydrocorisae:539 samplesof thi-rteenspecies Amphibiocorisae:398 samplesof thirteenspecies Saldidae:111 samples of elevenspecies In this work we shall describespecies living in rivers and we shall try to give a proper explanation to the frequency or infrequency of certain species.Our most important conclusionreferring to the distribution of different speciesis that their diversity is much higher for natural reaches,the water-bugsare more numerousand representedby more speciesin stagnantwaters, and the diversity of the amphibious bugs is the highest on middle and lower reaches.The greatestvariety of ground bug speciesare to be found on upper reachesor stony river banks. Thesespecies are not threatenedby extinction,but their existenceis closelyconnected with the natural conditions of rivers. They don't appear sensitive to industrial water pollution,as demonstratedby the high numberof samplescollected in pollutedwater near the city of Petru Groza. To the north the country borders Rumania, to the east – the Black Sea, to the south – Turkey and Greece, and to the west – Yugoslavia and Macedonia. Bulgaria is a parliamentary republic with a National Assembly (One House Parliament) of 240 national representatives. The President is Head of State. Geography of Bulgaria The Republic of Bulgaria covers a territory of 110 993 square kilometres. The average altitude of the country is 470 metres above sea level. The Stara Planina Mountain occupies central position and serves as a natural dividing line from the west to the east. It is a 750 km long mountain range stretching from the Vrushka Chuka Pass to Cape Emine and is part of the Alpine-Himalayan mountain range. It reaches the Black Sea to the east and turns to the north along the Bulgarian-Yugoslavian border. A natural boundary with Romania is the Danube River, which is navigable all along for cargo and passenger vessels. The Black Sea is the natural eastern border of Bulgaria and its coastline is 378 km long. There are clearly cut bays, the biggest two being those of Varna and Bourgas. About 25% of the coastline are covered with sand and hosts our seaside resorts. The southern part of Bulgaria is mainly mountainous. The highest mountain is Rila with Mt. Moussala being the highest peak on the Balkan Peninsula (2925 m). The second highest and the mountain of most alpine character in Bulgaria is Pirin with its highest Mt. -

Bulgarian Pirin National Park, UNESCO World Heritage Site Pirin National park is an UNESCO world heritage site because the exceptional beauty of the mountain scenery, glacial geomorphology, continuing evolution of flora, and an example of a functioning Balkan uplands ecosystem. The dominant part of the park is high mountain territory over 2,000 m. The diverse limestone mountain landscapes include over 70 glacial lakes and a range of glacial landforms, with many waterfalls, rocky screes and caves. Forests are dominated by conifers. Pirin’s natural coniferous forests include Macedonian Pine and Bosnian Pine, with many old growth trees. Endemic species for the Balkan and the Apenine Peninsula, the Bosnian Pine (Pinus heldreichii) is very special in Bulgaria, its forests are only met in Pirin and Slavyanka Mountains. A special Pirin landmark is a 1,300 years old tree of Bosnian Pine, known as “Baikusheva mura” – believed to be the oldest tree on the Balkan peninsula. The high mountain peaks and crags contrast with meadows, rivers and waterfalls and provide the opportunity to experience the aesthetics of a Balkan mountain landscape. NP Pirin includes a range of endemic and relict species that are representative of the Balkan Pleistocene flora. The park includes also one of the oldest reserves in Bulgaria – Bayuvi Dupki-Dzhindzhiritsa. Pirin National Park has long been subject to tourism pressure, largely caused by the development of ski facilities and ski runs, the main threat being the construction and development of Bansko ski zone on the northern slope of the Park. In 2011 a geodesic investigation of Bansko ski zone by the government proved that the ski zone concessionaire in fact uses a 65% larger area than the concession contract provides for. -

Gredleriana Vol. 7 / 2007 pp. 233 - 306 Biodiversität von Schmetterlingen (Lepidoptera) im Gebiet des Naturparks Schlern Peter Huemer Abstract Biodiversity of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) of the Schlern nature park (South Tyrol, Italy) The species diversity of Lepidoptera within the Schlern nature park has been explored during the vegetation periods 2006 and 2007. Altogether 1030 species have been observed in 16 sites, covering about one third of the entire fauna from the province of South Tyrol. Fifteen additional species have been collected during the diversity day 2006 whereas further 113 species date back to historical explorations. The species inventory includes 20 new records for South Tyrol which are briefly reviewed. Among these speciesMicropterix osthelderi, Rhigognostis incarnatella and Cydia cognatana are the first proved records from Italy. Further two species from the surroundings of the Park include the first published records ofPhyllonorycter issikii and Gelechia sestertiella for Italy. Site specific characteristics of Lepidoptera coenosis are discussed in some detail. Historical aspects of lepidopterological exploration of the Schlern are briefly introduced. Seine Nähe zum Siedlungsraum und vor allem die damit verbundene relativ leichte Erreichbarkeit haben wohl zur Motivation mehrerer Forschergenerationen beigetragen, das Gebiet näher zu untersuchen. Zusätzlich war wohl die Arbeit von GREDLER (1863) über Bad Ratzes für manchen Entomologen ein Anlass die Fauna des Schlerns näher unter die Lupe zu nehmen. Es wird über die Ergebnisse des Treffens berichtet, in dessen Ver- lauf 290 Arten mit 781 Funddaten ermittelt werden konnten. Für die Liste des Gebietes kamen 68 Arten als neu hinzu. Insgesamt wurden rund 4.100 Individuen beobachtet und bestimmt. Abstract. The results of the meeting are reported. 290 species of moths and butterflies with 781 sampling data could be found. For the list of the area 68 species would be new. In total around 4.100 specimen have been observed and determined. Key words. Juli 2013 hatten 30 Teilnehmer und Teilnehmerinnen im Berghotel Wal- cher in Schildlehen ober der Ramsau einen wunderschönen Aufenthalt, bestens betreut von der Bergsteiger- und Kletterlegende Hans Walcher und seinem Team. Als Veranstal- ter wollten wir wieder zur ursprünglichen Idee zurückgehen und nur einen überschau- baren Teilnehmerkreis einladen. Dieses Konzept hat sich bewährt, man konnte mit allen Gespräche führen, und von jedem Schmetterlingssammler wurde eine Liste mit Fund- daten zur Verfügung gestellt. Dezember 2011 ISBN 978-3-938249-01-7 Michael FIBIGER 1945 - 2011 Our dear friend and colleague, Michael FIBIGER, died on 16 February, 2011, peacefully and in the presence of the closest members of his family. For close on 18 months he had battled heroically and with characteristic determination against a particularly unpleasant form of cancer, and continued with his writing and research until close to the end. Michael was born on 29 June, 1945, in Hellerup, a suburb of Copenhagen, and began catching moths at the age of nine, particularly in the vicinity of the summer house where they stayed on the north coast of Zealand. By the time he was 11, he wanted to join the Danish Lepidoptera Society but was told he was too young and must wait “a couple of years”. So, exactly two years later he applied again and was accepted – as the youngest-ever Member of the Society. Michael always knew he wanted to be a teacher, and between 1965 and 1970 he attended training college at Hel- lerup Seminarium. Having graduated, he taught Danish, Biology and Special Education at Gentofte School until 1973. In the meantime, he studied Clinical Psychology at the University of Copenhagen from 1970 to 1976, and from 1973 to 1981 he became School Psychologist for elementary schools and high schools in the municipality of Gentofte, work which involved investigation and testing of children with psychiatric problems, counselling, supervi- sion and therapy. He was also an instructor in drug prevention for the Ministry of Education. -
