Rich gifts of raiment or grain or gold? Lo! I have flung to the East and the West Priceless treasures torn from my breast, and yielded the sons of my stricken womb to the drum-beats of duty, the sabers of doom. Gathered like pearls in their alien graves Silent they sleep by the Persian waves, scattered like shells on Egyptian sands, they lie with pale brows and brave, broken hands, strewn like blossoms mowed down by chance on the blood-brown meadows of Flanders and France.

Who Gave Their Lives Always it woke him, even in France, In The Great War Until this morning and this snow. 1914-1919 If anything might rouse him now The kind old sun will know. Think how it wakes the seeds— Woke once the clays of a cold star. Are limbs, so dear-achieved, are sides Full-nerved, still warm, too hard to stir? Was it for this the clay grew tall? —O what made fatuous sunbeams toil To break earth’s sleep at all? Wilfred Owen Base of the War Memorial in Buckland St Mary churchyard ‘From Buckland St Mary there went into HM’s forces about seventy men from a population of about 450. Of these sixteen joined voluntarily all the remainder, except those underage at the time attested under Lord Derby’s scheme …1 … On the outbreak of war several ladies of the village took a course of sick nursing and ambulance work and being thus qualified they did most useful work at the V.A.D.2 hospital at Ilminster. The women of the parish were organised by Mesdames Lance and Pott and met weekly for the purpose of making pillowcases and moss bags for splints, several hundred of which, were sent to a collection station.’ (The Western Gazette) 1 See page 7.

  • Scammell, Walter
Cadet* Walter Scammell (Regimental Number 2958) lies buried in Cambridge City Cemetery: Grave reference, C. 3631.. *Flying Officer Cadet His occupation prior to military service recorded as that of a school-teacher earning four- hundred fifty dollars per annum, Walter Scammell was a volunteer of the Tenth Recruitment Draft. He presented himself for medical examination at the Church Lads Brigade Armoury* in St. John’s, capital city of the Dominion of Newfoundland, on July 3 of 1916. It was a procedure which was to pronounce him as…Fit for Foreign Service. *The building was to serve as the Regimental Headquarters in Newfoundland for the duration of the conflict. (continued) 1 It was to be twelve days following that medical assessment, July 13, at the same venue, before Walter Scammell would enlist. He was thus engaged…for the duration of the war*…at the daily private soldier’s rate of a single dollar to which was to be appended a ten-cent per diem Field Allowance. *At the outset of the War, perhaps because it was felt by the authorities that it would be a conflict of short duration, the recruits enlisted for only a single year. As the War progressed, however, this was obviously going to cause problems and the men were encouraged to re-enlist. Later recruits – as of or about May of 1916 - signed on for the ‘Duration’ at the time of their original enlistment. Only several hours were now to follow before there subsequently came to pass, on this further occasion still at the CLB Armoury on Harvey Road, the final formality of his enlistment: attestation.

It stands in the parish churchyard in Friern Barnet Lane. As the population grew in the 19th and 20th centuries, new parishes were created: All Saints’ from the northern portion of the parish, St Peter-le-Poer to the south. The church of St John the Evangelist in Friern Barnet Road, completed in 1910, was built as a chapel-of-ease to St James’s, to serve what had become the main centre of population of the parish, near the Colney Hatch Asylum (later Friern Hospital) and the railway station. To make full use of the two church buildings, since 2009 St James’s Church has become the place of worship for the Greek Orthodox Community of St Katherine, with Church of England services taking place in St John’s.

  • President's Report 2017
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL : 2017 1. Gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the second meeting of the present Council. The USI is a unique, autonomous Institution with unequalled expertise in the field of National Security and matters pertaining to the Defence Services. It has built an outstanding reputation over the last 147 years. It is my privilege to present the report of the Institution for the year 2017. A copy of the report has been placed on the table and will be included in the minutes of the meeting. MEMBERSHIP 2. The Institution began with a membership of 215 members and was 3500 when it moved to its present premises in 1996. Today we have 14,321 Members. It is heartening to report that during the current year 137 new Life Members, 43 Associate Members, 107 Ordinary Members and 1217 Course Members were enrolled. This continuous growth exemplifies the support and trust the Institution enjoys. FINANCES 3. The Institution does not get any grant / aid from the Ministry of Defence or the Services. It continues to carry out all its activities from the resources generated within. Since the USI Centres {Center for Strategic Studies and Simulation (CS3) and Center for Armed Forces Historical Research (CAFHR)} are not able to meet their annual expenditure, they are allocated resources from the Corpus Fund. Further, our building and equipment being more than two decades old, now require greater allocation of funds for their renovation and upkeep. 4. The Audit Report and Balance Sheet for 2016-17, Revised Estimates for 2017-18 and Budget Estimates for 2018-19 are already with you.

AUDLEY PEDIGREES CHAPTER XX AUDLEY OF LIVERPOOL Compiled for George Audley of Liverpool by Aleyn Lyell Reade Privately printed by Percy Lund, Humphries &Co London & Bradford Introduction This document contains as far as possible an exact copy of Chapter XX 'Audley of Liverpool' from the Audley Pedigrees, compiled for George Audley of Liverpool by Aleyn Lyell Reade, Hon M.A. Oxon, of Liverpool, and privately published by Percy Lund, Humphries & Co. London and Bradford in the mid to late 1930s. This document consists of four sections. The first consist of the ‘general extracts’ of information from various sources. These pages are a scanned copy of the original pages of the original publication. The following three sections contain the information regarding the four ‘separate’ branches of the Audley family that are detailed in the original document. These section have been scanned and then ‘OCRed’ to put them into a word processor format. The ultimate aim is to update as much as possible these four sections. Unfortunately the OCR software used was not perfect and although each section has been checked this process may have caused transcription errors. If anyone spots any such errors could you please advise us through the website contact page and we will revise this document accordingly. The original publication is understood that it consists of three volumes consisting of twenty chapters in total and originally published in 3 volumes. The George Audley of Liverpool (1864 – 1932) who funded the original publication is part of Family Pedigree ‘C’ of this Chapter XX. Unfortunately he died before the third volume could be published.

Patrons Sir Mark and Lady Lennox-Boyd : President Mr Robert Parker DL Lancashire Gardens Trust Conservation & Planning Group 19 December 2018 Your ref: 18F/2654 Planning Department Liverpool City Council Municipal Buildings Dale Street Liverpool L2 2DH For the attention of Cerys Robinson, Development Control Division By email only to [email protected] Dear Sir/Madam Planning Application No: 18F/2654 To erect a private mausoleum within the cemetery; Allerton Cemetery, Woolton Road, Liverpool L19. GT Reference: E18/1232 Thank you for consulting The Gardens Trust (GT) in its role as Statutory Consultee with regard to proposed development affecting a site listed by Historic England (HE) on their Register of Parks and Gardens as per the above application. The Lancashire Gardens Trust (LGT) is a member organisation of the GT and works in partnership with it in respect of the protection and conservation of registered sites, and is authorised by the GT to respond on GT’s behalf in respect of such consultations. We have reviewed the application documentation, but not visited the site. It is noted that the application site occupies a prominent location within the Grade II Registered Allerton Cemetery, laid out by the City Engineer based on influence of contemporary European examples and opened in 1909. The current application concerns development within the central section of the Cemetery which is dominated by the three mortuary Chapels, the Anglican Chapel at the central avenue, the Non Conformist and Roman Catholic symmetrically arranged to the north and south respectively. LGT objects to the current application for the following reasons: It is not clear from the application documentation whether mausoleums already exist within Allerton Cemetery, or whether this current application is setting a precedent.
