14 T H E Heartbeat FEATURE GALLERY Filipinos Speak Out The Filipinos’ Thoughts on the 2013 Election Edren T. Flores

On May 13, 2013, the Filipinos will once again exercise their inalienable right to vote for the next leaders of the country. According to the promotional teaser of ANC’s Road to 2013, an estimated 54 million voters are expected to participate in the upcoming midterm election. After restoring the Philippine democracy in the 1986 People Power Revolution, do Filipinos really understand how significant are their votes in the election? The country has had countless elections after that historic event in EDSA. However, the patterns of how these elections have happened are the same. Most, if not all, of the leaders who are installed in public office are those mockingly dubbed as trapo (traditional politician), which literally means ‘rug’ or ‘floor scrub.’ The sad thing in here is that, more often than not, Filipino voters help facilitate these trapos to secure a seat in power through cheating that come in all sorts of way. These tremendous forms of cheating, most probably, are the outgrowth of the unacceptable yet rampantly practiced cheating in school. Cheating which is the best vehicle of a foolish student toward an imprudent academic excellence is the same cheating which is the best instrument of an unwise politician toward a discreditable leadership excellence. As we look back on the controversies and violence that question the integrity of the past elections in the country (not to exclude the 2010 automated election), is it safe to say that Filipino voters are matured enough to vote for an excellent leader this coming election? Filipinos in all walks of life were asked about the matter. Here’s what they have to say:

Showcasing their God-given abilities, the students are freed from the bland, routinary activities of their academic lives. They find escape from the oh-so-boring daily actions. You know what they say, “All work without play makes Johnny a dull boy.”

These events also serve as avenue for the prowess of the students in the various fields such as academic, sports, and socio-cultural. These are manifestations of the students’ versatility and adeptness in the areas where they excel. It is a proof that the school is not just for studying many subject-areas and subject-matters; it is also the perfect place to draw out the best in each individual.

As the students actively participate and flaunt their talents, and skills, they also learn the value of comradeship.

Students no longer play for themselves, but for the pride of their teams. They do away with childish selfishness and fight for the glory of the teams they stand for.

They care not for the sweat, blood, and pain. They mind not the scorching sun or the shivering night wind. They are ever-ready to move forward and achieve the glittering grin of victory.

Intramural events are conduits in attaining unity among individuals and groups. They aid people not only in pursuing excellence and success but most especially, in strengthening the knots that unite. They are bound together for a week or two, and become a portal to abscond from the stress-causing realities of life. FEATURE GALLERY Anti-Epal Bill for the Ma-papel Ivy B. Lurica
