This dissertation investigates how history is used in historical documentary films, and ar- gues that the maker of such films constantly negotiates between cognitive, moral, and aes- thetic demands. In support of this contention a number of historical documentaries by Swedish historian-filmmakers Olle Häger and Hans Villius are discussed. Other historical documentaries supply additional examples. The analyses take into account both the produc- tion process and the representations themselves. The history culture and the social field of history production together form the conceptual framework for the study, and one of the aims is to analyse the role of professional historians in public life. The analyses show that different considerations compete and work together in the case of all documentaries, and figure at all stages of pre-production, production, and post-produc- tion. But different considerations have particular inuence at different stages in the produc- tion process and thus they are more or less important depending on where in the process the producer puts his emphasis on them.

Roller, Advisor Approved by Julia Nelson Hawkins __________________________________ Frank Coulson Advisor Greek and Latin Graduate Program Fritz Graf Copyright by Molly Ayn Jones Lewis 2009 ABSTRACT Recent scholarship of identity issues in Imperial Rome has focused on the complicated intersections of “Greek” and “Roman” identity, a perfect microcosm in which to examine the issue in the high-stakes world of medical practice where physicians from competing Greek-speaking traditions interacted with wealthy Roman patients. I argue that not only did Roman patients and politicians have a variety of methods at their disposal for neutralizing the perceived threat of foreign physicians, but that the foreign physicians also were given ways to mitigate the substantial dangers involved in treating the Roman elite. I approach the issue from three standpoints: the political rhetoric surrounding foreign medicines, the legislation in place to protect doctors and patients, and the ethical issues debated by physicians and laypeople alike. I show that Roman lawmakers, policy makers, and physicians had a variety of ways by which the physical, political, and financial dangers of foreign doctors and Roman patients posed to one another could be mitigated. The dissertation argues that despite barriers of xenophobia and ethnic identity, physicians practicing in Greek traditions were fairly well integrated into the cultural milieu of imperial Rome, and were accepted (if not always trusted) members of society.

Pete, a suburban professional with a family, is desperately trying to construct a “man cave,” a getaway in his basement where he can cool off from the pressures of modern life. Andy, a disturbed, alcoholic carpenter, is obsessed with knives and has built an underground home in the forest behind Pete’s house. When they meet, each man’s strengths covers the other’s deficiencies, but only for so long. Eventually, even the most carefully built façade crumbles. ii 1 1. The night was full, and Andy let it surround him. He sat on the ground, his back resting on a large boulder about six hundred feet from the edge of the woods. So close to the end, but the trees were thick here. Behind him, the woods stretched for a mile before the next subdivision sprouted out of nowhere. Crafted as a genuine portrayal of the human spirit, it was initially meant to be a single song written as a birthday gift for mezzo-soprano and friend, Stephanie Blythe. The composer, however, was so compelled by this topic that he set a musical backdrop that chronicled American immigration in the early 20th century, through the stories of twenty-one refugees. A fortuitous meeting between Alan Smith and Paul Sigrist, Jr. (former director of the Ellis Island Oral History Project), resulted in a collaboration that became the catalyst for this song cycle. Mr. Sigrist supplied over 100 pages of quotations, taken from interviews he conducted with the Ellis Island Oral History Project, which then were carefully abridged by the composer to create Vignettes: Ellis Island. This document chronicles the development of this cycle, discussing its origins, influences, historical relevance, and performances. It also provides a biography on the composer, and details interviews conducted from July-October 2008 with Alan Louis Smith, Paul Sigrist, Jr.

    A HISTORY OF Tooele County Compiled by Ouida Blanthorn UTAH CENTENNIAL COUNTY HISTORY SERIES A HISTORY OF Tooek County Compiled by Ouida Blanthorn Tooele County is the second-largest county in the state, extending from the ridge line of the Oquirrh Mountains to the state line in the west across a broad portion of northwestern Utah. Human habitation extends back thou­ sands of years to the period of ancient Lake Bonneville. Tooele was one of the first six counties created in Utah and began to be settled as early as 1850 by Mormon pioneers, who made extensive use of the county's rich grazing and timber resources. Tooele County has been known in recent decades for its vast desert expanses, including Bonneville Salt Flats, its mineral resources from both the Great Salt Lake and area moun­ tain ranges, and its uses by the U.S. military for test ranges and various other facilities, including the storage and disposal of chemi­ cal and other weapons. Growth of the county has been rapid in recent years, due in part to its proximity to Salt Lake City, many residents using Tooele County towns as bedroom communities for the Wasatch Front. Controversy currently exists between such residents and those who would expand use of the county for industrial growth and waste disposal, including nuclear- waste repositories.
