PRESIDENT’S REPORT Jerome Mohen

2016 was a year with many highlights for the association, including:

• The successful introduction of match day communication systems for field umpires in all grades; • The continued growth of the WANFLUA social calendar, with another spectacular Hall of Fame function at Bells Functions Centre to induct former greats Gavin Statham, Graham Daniel and David Shawcross; and • The successful completion of a second fundraising venture with Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) following the 2016 season which netted a gross $54,000.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 2016 WANFLUA Committee for their tireless and selfless contributions throughout the 2016 season. Special thanks must also go to WANFLUA Vice President Ashley Coster for his brilliant management of the day- to-day logistics around the fundraising venture with RWWA. Furthermore, I would like to thank outgoing committee members Yarraan Street and Reuben Garlett for their valued contributions to our association over several years.

SECRETARY’S REPORT Alex Martin

2016 was a challenging yet rewarding year for the WANFLUA. The horse guarding services our members provided for Racing and Wagering WA over the 2015- 16 summer produced a significant financial return for the association, which certainly made the long hours Ash Coster and Jerome Mohen in particular spent organising this venture extremely worthwhile. Over the course of the season, the group was able to see some tangible returns on this investment of members’ time, with a lot of new fitness and training equipment purchased, as well as the implementation of the Match-Comms system, in conjunction with the WAFC. From a personal viewpoint, it was fantastic to see the hard work of the Executive and General Committee, as well as a large number of the members, lead to arguably the most significant improvement to the group’s resources over at least the past decade.

With 2016 being my third season in the position of Secretary, I found that a lot of the hard work I did in my first two years really paid off. In particular, the time spent consolidating the Running Members, Life Members, Hall of Fame and Past Members databases and emailing lists made the task of maintaining regular communications with members far easier than it had been previously. In addition, having our constitution updated to enable all communications to be sent electronically where possible has saved a considerable amount of time.

On that note, any Running or Life Member who is As in previous years, I strongly encourage all running not receiving regular email correspondence from members to consider becoming involved in some way the WANFLUA is encouraged to send an email to with the association. SOCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT David Thatcher

Well another year has come to an end and just like previous years it has been packed full of great social events and functions which have been enjoyed by both our running and life members. I was lucky to keep both Jack Nyenhuis and Yarraan Streat on the social committee, which meant we had an experienced team organising and running the functions in 2016.

The year started off with our traditional Panel Night and despite their continued success, Alex Martin and Chris McCann were moved on as hosts mid-way through the evening, with Daniel Johanson and Sean Moylan taking the reins and doing a great job. WAFL UMPIRE MANAGER REPORT Darryl Sinclair

Season 2016 commenced in fine style with an outstanding pre-season program. The appointment of Strength & Conditioning Coach Luke Daniher provided the umpiring team with a clear direction of what was required on the training track and the manner in which Luke conducted the weekly sessions and managed the entire program was excellent.

I am pleased to announce that Luke will continue with us in season 2017.

The manner in which our trainers Peta Ryan, Caroline Warr, Tayla Lewis and Alyce Newman have managed the welfare of our team so that on match day we can perform at our best is really appreciated. Peta will also remain with us in 2017.

The Hal Symons Fitness Camp again was successful at Woodman Point and continues to be one of the highlights of the season. The games conducted by Jeff Dalgleish and Luke Farmer at the camp assisted in helping the team bond together. The guest speakers were also well received, the team games were fantastic and the fellowship ensured that we were prepared for season 2016. We have always said farewell to our champions appropriately and Stuart Parry’s tribute on the Saturday night was one to remember. worked tirelessly training and educating the umpires and this provided numerous opportunities for umpires To our retiring umpires Stuart, Scotty, KB, Lauren and to officiate Colts football and the future is positive. A chair in the middle of the room in November signified the theme for 2016 – Pick me. Generational change had occurred in the group following the retirements of iconic figures Stuart Parry and Scott McPhee. To lose 12 grand finals and more than 500 games of experience in one hit created both a chasm and an opportunity. Jordy Wright’s decision to take the year off further impacted upon the experience within the group. But it was clear that those who remained had an incredible opportunity to step up.

We asked for people to make us pick them and the umpires delivered. Matt Adams won the Capes Medal after showcasing his skill and experience during the pre-season. GOAL UMPIRES REPORT John Marrapodi, Head Coach

2016 was my second year as WAFL/AFL State Goal Umpire Coach. This meant I had the challenge of building on what was achieved in 2015 and to work towards improving on the high standard which had been set.

In 2016, a standard goal umpire assessment process was implemented across all three grades. As result, of the 540 appointments made throughout the season, a total of 534 appointed umpires were ‘Match Day Coached’ and received a match assessment. The aim was to ‘Match Day Coach’ as many umpires as possible and provide the necessary feedback to assist them in their development.

Seven goal umpires debuted in League during 2016, which is almost unprecedented and hasn’t happened since 1988. These goal umpires were Dillon Jane, Jason Yazdani, David Hayes, Jason Tyrrell, Brendon Rac, Jamie Lamont and Nic Stace.

We had six umpires debut in Reserves – Nick Walters, Christian Cutrona, Jayden Trivanovic, Aiden Pover, Dion Boules and Ryan Wade. In addition, nine new umpires joined the WAFL panel – Maddison Lamont, Aiden Pover, Christian Cutrona, Henry Burke, Chantelle Brody Payne – Carter Medal – Goal Umpire of the Year Hardeman, Ken Duggan, Dion Boules, Ryan Wade Jason Yazdani – WANFLUA Rising Star and Tegan Bartlett. These umpires have joined us with Steve Gaensler – Shawcross Medal – Most Improved some or no experience. My thanks go to the AFL Goal Umpiring Group – Dale Edwick. Brett Rogers, Luke Edwards and Sally Boud. Their leadership and willingness to assist our WAFL umpiring group needs to be acknowledged. Dale Edwick announced his retirement from AFL prior to the end of the 2016 season. His contribution to both AFL/ WAFL has been outstanding, both as a goal umpire and in his leadership. Congratulations to Sally Boud who made the AFL finals panel in her first season. This was clearly an outstanding achievement.

I would also like to acknowledge the contribution made by Matthew Laycock, who at the end of the 2015 season came off the AFL Goal Umpiring panel. His return to the to the WAFL Goal Umpire panel added strength, experience and support to the younger group.

The introduction of the Women’s AFL competition in 2017 will provide opportunity for females to participate in goal umpiring. We have five females who will be umpiring in the WAFL competition – Sally Boud (AFL), Tiana Fry, Maddison Lamont, Chantelle Hardeman and Tegan Bartlett.

I would also like to acknowledge my two assistance coaches, Colin Shawcross and Robert Davis. Their assistance, support and guidance throughout 2016 was outstanding. STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING REPORT Luke “The Chief” Daniher

The Strength and Conditioning team consisted of Luke Daniher, Jamison Ruscoe and the addition of Duncan Bradbury. Each team member added a variety of strengths which provided the skills and knowledge for what was a successful year from a strength and conditioning perspective.

The annual plan consisted of a tough yet effective pre-season, a fun filled team building camp, 4 testing sessions to assess the various fitness components through all phases of the year, and an annual reflection on the program’s effectiveness.

This year we introduced a new testing battery looking at more specific measures of umpire performance. This provided a greater insight into each athlete’s various fitness components enabling umpire’s to assess both their strengths and weaknesses in comparison to their specific umpire group. Each fitness component has a particular weighting when it comes to the various umpire disciplines so it was constructive to test each of these and illustrate the importance to their role on game day. I commend the group for their understanding and positive attitude to the change of testing battery. All took to the tests with a great deal of determination and utilised the post testing information to maintain strengths and fine tune areas of weakness. This enabled them to further their individual performance and ultimately increased their ability to service the game.

The results of the testing throughout the year were very encouraging from all disciplines. Improvements of 10-58% were realised in aerobic capacity, repeat sprint ability, reaction speed, muscular power, agility, and flexibility. It was great to see these results and allow umpires going into the 2017 season with a more rounded knowledge of themselves as athletes, providing benchmarks to build on for years to come.

We as strength and conditioning coaches could not have undertaken the job we undertook throughout the 2016 season without the continued support from the coaches, physiotherapists, rehabilitation staff and the umpiring group collectively. We appreciate it immensely and look forward to continuing to improve the group moving forward into the 2017 season ahead.

PAGE 26 2016 YEARBOOK TRAINERS REPORT Peta Ryan, Head Trainer

2016 was a busy a versatile year for the WAFL Umpiring Trainers team. Before the season had even begun the trainers were hard at work creating, advertising and distributing the 2016 WAFL Trainers Calendar. The proceeds of this endeavour managed to raise almost $600 for the Cure for MND Foundation.

Once the season was underway, the trainers rooms were almost always busy with a steady flow of umpires seeking advice on injury prevention, management and rehabilitation throughout the year. I would like to express my gratitude to the 2016 team for volunteering their evenings to attend trainings on Tuesday’s and Thursdays, as well as their hard work at games every weekend.

At the start of the year we farewelled our much loved Assistant Head Trainer Caroline Warr as she departed for a semester abroad in the USA! Her shoes were quickly filled by Tayla Lewis, who has been responsible for managing the rehabilitation group over the season and ensuring injured umpires return to their pre- injury level in a safe and timely manner. Tayla has also joined the AFL trainers crew alongside Alyce Newman and myself.

Being part of the WAFL Umpiring Trainers team not only allows trainers to assist the association, but it has also seen opportunities for the association to give back to the trainers. One instance being when AFL field umpire, Luke Farmer, organised an evening of professional development for the team. We were lucky enough to participate in a physiotherapy pilates and ultrasound workshop. This experience was greatly appreciated by the current and aspiring physiotherapists and exercise/sports science students.

All in all, 2016 was an exceptional season and we cannot wait to see what 2017 brings!

PRE-SEASON WRAP Ash Moore

My initial expectation was that pre-season training would be solely dedicated to increasing individual fitness levels. However as the phases progressed my knowledge regarding our core values began to improve from wanting to do the right thing to understanding the importance of exhibiting the right actions to better reflect these values.

I recall being corrected during a training session where I still had this preconceived idea to just build fitness. Although my intent was well placed and no disrespect was intended my actions did not represent this. By following instructions and participating with group activities I could better demonstrate respect and teamwork, significantly more important behaviours than the pursuit of personal gain.

We have a wide range of personalities from varied backgrounds all striving to be aligned with the same fundamentals and I found this very unique and impressive. I also found the inclusive culture of helping and encouraging each other to be very unique and impressive as well. I began to realise that by adhering to the directions given, better group results could be achieved, which installed a significant amount of trust in the panel.

I felt a strong sense of appreciation towards the coaches, trainers and fitness coaches for the helpful and encouraging manner in which they imparted valuable knowledge and expertise without asking for anything in return. From these actions I found the most satisfying aspect to my first pre-season to be my progression from working towards personal gain to being able to offer more to the group.

HARRY’S NIGHT AT THE RACES Jordan Fry

Harry’s Night was once again held in April in order to recognise the outstanding contribution that our trainers make to the continued growth and success of the WANFLUA, as well as honour the late Harry Jardine. Harry was a goal umpire with the WANFLUA for a number of seasons before further serving the association as a trainer and was known for often cooking up a feast for the running umpires.

In previous years, Harry’s Night has seen variety of different themes for the night. In 2012, the first Night at the Races was introduced, before it moved to a trip to the high rollers room with a casino-themed night in 2013. In 2014 it moved back to the races for a second time, while last year the night took the form of a Murder Mystery evening. Triple Montgomery Medal winner Gavin Statham, five-time State boundary rider Graham Daniel and former AFL goal umpire David Shawcross were this year’s inductees into the prestigious WANFLUA Hall of Fame.

The trio were formally inducted into the elite group of former umpiring greats during a cocktail event at Bells Function Centre in August. Each inductee was presented with a caricature in front of an audience which included their respective families, current and former umpires.

Daniel, who umpired 195 games – including 6 AFL Statham had to suit up in more than 200 games before games – over a career spanning 17 years, fondly getting his first crack at a WAFL Grand Final in 2007, recalled his League debut at Claremont Oval in 1974 the same year he won his first Montgomery Medal. FOOTBALL MATCH SOUTH VS NORTH OF THE RIVER Jordan Fry

It wouldn’t have been a 2016 football match without rain and that certainly was the case at Shark Park in early October for the annual North v South Umpires clash.

After an early hiccup when the original ground, South Oval at Curtin University, was torn up and unplayable, the game was quickly moved and played in conditions that were more suited towards swimming.

Led by a dominant midfield possessing the likes of Hunt, Worobec, Kirk-Williams, Hennessey and Edinger, South was able to get away to a fast start, kicking the opening two goals of the game. North, however, was able to get back into the game by kicking two of the next three goals, capped off with a brilliant diving mark and conversion from Titterton, to only be down two goals at quarter-time.

However, after quarter time it was all South. With the physical presence of Hayes and Dalgleish in the forward 50, as well as small forwards Jones, Dugan, Hale and Grygorcewicz, South capitalised on their midfield dominance and kicked away. Everything In a losing effort, Daniher was outstanding. He stopped seemed to be falling the way of the South, with even a many forward runs from the South team and was a kick off the side of the boot from Worobec fallling into beast around the clearances. PRE-SEASON MEDALLISTS

Ross Capes Medal – Matt Adams Matt’s ability to excel in all key areas of umpiring throughout the 2016 pre- season made him the standout winner of the Ross Capes Medal. He was the only person to rank in the top four in each of the weekly pre-season bounce tests and What’s Your Decision quizzes and also the 3km time trial. As an AFL rookie, Matt was then given the chance to officiate in a NAB Challenge game and he showed his ability to perform at a higher level. He set the standard for others to chase if they wanted to become an elite WAFL umpire.

Ron Hall Medal – Michael Butler Michael joined the WAFL in 2014, and while he is not the most gifted runner or umpire, Michael gives 100% effort in everything he does, and with another good pre-season in 2017 should be pushing for League selection.

Merv Rose Medal – Steve Gaensler Steve demonstrated throughout the pre-season that his commitment to goal umpiring was at the highest level. This included fitness, on-field performance and leadership on and off the field.

PAGE 46 2016 YEARBOOK HIGH HONOUR AWARDS

John McKay Life Members Trophy – Ashley Coster WANFLUA Vice President, Ashley Coster, was the recipient of the John McKay Life Members Trophy in 2016. Over the past 12 months, Ashley went well above and beyond what is expected of the role of Vice President with his work on the RWWA Horse Guarding and the subsequent purchase and operation of the Match Communication systems.

His work on these ventures included the negotiations and the establishment of a contract with RWWA, organising training of members, allocating members to race days and providing each member with information specific to their assignment, not to mention guarding on every race day himself. Regarding the Match Comms, Ashley’s contributions included conducting negotiations and establishing a contract with the WAFC to ensure their financial contribution and support of this venture, sourcing quotes, liaising with suppliers, organising testing of the equipment prior to purchasing, training members in how to operate the systems, including writing supporting documents and PowerPoints, distributing and collecting the packs every Tuesday and Thursday and dealing with various equipment malfunctions.

It is clear that Ashley’s contribution of his time and skills has resulted in a significant and lasting benefit to every running member of the WANFLUA and that he is therefore a very deserving recipient of the John McKay Life Members Trophy.

Colts Umpire of the Year – Alex Paton Alex received a late call-up in Round 1 due to the injury of another umpire and took the opportunity with both hands. He impressed so much in his first five Colts games that he was appointed to his Reserves debutin Round 8. He was then given the opportunity to officiate in a National 18s game at Domain Stadium. Alex has a very good knowledge of the laws, works hard to get into good decision-making positions and has built strong rapport with players. He brings a massive amount of energy and enthusiasm to the group.

Rising Star – Jason Yazdani Jason clearly demonstrated his passion and self-motivation to achieve the highest level of football. In his second season on the WAFL panel he was promoted to League football after Round 5 and became a regular senior umpire. He was also selected to umpire in the 16s-National competition. Jason umpired the 2016 Colts Grand Final.

MOST IMPROVED MEDALLISTS

Brett Rosebury Medal – Justin Power Justin’s 2016 season is a prime example of what happens when you dedicate yourself to improvement. Justin struggled with his fitness during the pre-season, but worked relentlessly to improve instead of being content with his fantastic decision-making and bouncing results. He clearly benefited from being part of the AFL Scholarship program and was appointed the emergency umpire for the State Game. Justin made his League finals debut in 2016 and was later selected for the WAFL Grand Final. He will be an AFL rookie in 2017.

Greg Smith Medal – Clayton Gardner Clayton made the transition from field to boundary in 2014 and has taken time to grasp the concept of what is required. To his credit, Clayton has worked hard this year on areas the coaches felt he needed to improve, such as his positioning, and also his knowledge and understanding of boundary umpiring. His fitness also improved considerably and he is a worthy winner of the Greg Smith Medal.

David Shawcross Medal – Steve Gaensler Steve started and ended the season with the same level of commitment in all areas of goal umpiring. His dedication to umpiring and support and encouragement of the team was evident. His on-field performance and off-field contribution made him a natural selection for League football and he was rewarded with an appointment to the 2016 Reserves Grand Final.

PAGE 48 2016 YEARBOOK UMPIRE OF THE YEAR MEDALLISTS

Montgomery Medal – Nathan Williamson Nathan came of age during 2016 to emerge as the State’s elite field umpire. His professionalism ensured he was well prepared for every game and he challenged himself to set a work-rate that no one else could match. Most importantly, his decisional accuracy was elite, bouncing at 91% for the season and was third fastest in the 3km summer time trial. Nathan also umpired a NAB Challenge game during the pre-season, then the State Game and had a wonderful finals series. The AFL has recognised Nathan’s efforts by giving him a contract for 2017.

John Devine Medal – Sean Moylan Sean has always had the ability to umpire at a high level. In 2016, he changed his mindset from previous years and this enabled him to be more relaxed in games and not put unnecessary pressure on himself to umpire really well every week. The gap between his very good games and not so great games also narrowed, allowing him to complete an outstanding season on the boundary.

Bill Carter Medal – Brody Payne After a disappointing finish to 2015, he returned with a great deal of hunger and passion in all areas of goal umpiring. His commitment was clearly demonstrated in his on-field performance that earned him the State Game and then the 2016 Grand Final.

STATE GAME Darryl Sinclair

Front Row: Adam Reardon, Nic Saltmarsh, Mark Worobec, Nathan Williamson, Michael Washbourne Back Row: Justin Power (Emergency Field), Brody Payne, Kyle Sinclair, Sean Moylan, Dylan Geeves, Sam Hunter (Third Scorer)

This season Western Australia hosted Tasmania in Our boundary umpires Sean Moylan, Kyle Sinclair and warm conditions at Steel Blue Oval. Michael Washbourne managed the warm conditions remarkably well and went unnoticed. The Sandgropers were simply too strong for the Apple Islanders and held an unbeatable lead at half-time. Given the one-sided contest, goal umpire Brody Payne concentration powers were put to the test and Our umpiring team were fantastic with field umpires his performance was outstanding. Nathan Williamson and Mark Worobec putting in strong performances. This was Nathan and Mark’s first Our six state representatives serviced the game and taste of State football and they managed the game represented the WANFLUA with aplomb and they competently. Both umpires moved sharply and their should be proud of their performance. bouncing was perfect.

STATE 18’s Bayley Lamont

AFL National Umpire Talent Camp, Melbourne.

In June 2016 Ben Laycock, Dilon Jane and I were selected to represent WA in Melbourne at the NAB 18’s Nationals Championships. The week involved interacting and umpiring with a group of Umpires from all states as well as training with the Melbourne based AFL Panel.

Each of us were allocated 2 games with the first game held under the closed roof of Etihad on a freezing Melbourne Friday, this made the inside of the Stadium feel like the inside of an Esky.

The second game saw us travel to Skilled Stadium in Geelong. The experience of running on different grounds and with different umpires was invaluable to us all to help us develop as umpires.

The games weren’t the only focus during the week as we also had volunteer sessions at the Sacred Heart Mission Kitchen helping to prepare meals for the homeless, helping at the Boots for All, sorting old footy boots for underprivileged kids and also mentoring young umpires at grounds around Melbourne. The week was a great opportunity to learn and develop our umpiring skills.

From this Dilion and I were selected to umpire the Curtain Raiser Game before the AFL Grand Final between the best 17‘s from the Championship. This was a great experience along with being able to attend the Grand Final. The Umpire Talent Camp presented us with a fantastic way to improve both our umpiring and life skills. Thanks to the AFL for such an awesome opportunity.

PAGE 52 2016 YEARBOOK STATE 16’s Dan Johanson

In July 2016 myself, Curtis Snadden, Caylem Priest, Michael Butler, and Jason Yazdani were honoured to be selected to participate in the NAB Under 16s National Championships. It was a fantastic week away on the Gold Coast where we took part in training and coaching sessions, team dinners, team building activities and of course umpired a couple of games of football.

Living away from home for the first time for most of us and living with fellow umpires from the different states was challenging at first. By the end of the week we had made some good mates who we will endeavour to catch up with when the time presents itself.

The way the week was run was fantastic. It felt like we were living like AFL umpires on the road. The level of professionalism required and demanded by the coaches was elite. It was amazing to have former AFL field umpire Stuart Wenn coaching the fieldies alongside Adam Davis. They are a wealth of knowledge, but also absolute ripper blokes, and we had many a good chat with them over the many team dinners throughout the week.

For myself I tried to just be a sponge and soak up as much knowledge as possible. The week showed me the dedication, hard work, and professionalism to not only make it at the next level, but also to succeed. It gets pretty tough the further along you get, and there is a lot of talent from all over the country, especially from Victoria, and South Australia (not so much New South Wales). But what the week showed me was that the group of WAFL umpires that were sent over to represent our group, the WANFLUA, and our state as a whole, are right up there with the best in Australia.

I hope that each of us took as much out of the week as we did and then used the knowledge we gained to further develop our games. To those lucky enough to be selected to represent WA in 2017 take the opportunity with both hands and make the most of it, because it is a very special time of the year.
