The offense erupted for six runs in the first inning and reached double digits by the fourth on the way to a 12-1 victory before an announced 18,119 and their biggest run total at Camden Yards since they scored 15 against the St. Louis Cardinals on June 17. Chris Davis did most of the damage, with a fluke two-run home run in the first and a grand slam in the fourth to set a career high with six RBIs. The grand slam was the eighth of his career. “It was one of those nights when we just kind of fed off of each other,” Davis said. “We’ve been looking for that for a while. Obviously, you try to get out there and score as many runs as possible — as an offense that’s your job every night — but it felt good to see one through nine hitting tonight.” It all accrued to the benefit of starting pitcher Dylan Bundy, who gave up a quick run in the first inning, then settled in to enjoy a rare night of lavish run support. He was coming off an 11-day hiatus intended to freshen him up for the stretch run and – like Chris Tillman the night before – seemed to benefit from the rest. Bundy looked fatigued in his final two outings before the All-Star break, giving up 11 earned runs in just nine innings, but manager Buck Showalter was already planning the long midseason break before those two games. He bounced back to give up just four hits over six innings in his 13th quality start of the season. Miguel Castro took over at that point and pitched two hitless innings. Zach Britton finished up in a nonsave situation. It took Bundy a couple of innings to settle in. He had the bases loaded in the second before working out of a jam that might have changed the complexion of the game. “The first three innings, I just felt off,” he said. “I can’t even explain what was off, but something was. That’s how you get out of it is just going out there and staying in the game and trying to figure out things that work and make adjustments on that day.” Davis returned from the disabled list Friday and has been in the starting lineup in each of the past five games, but he had just one hit in his first 14 at-bats since losing more than a month of the season to an oblique strain. “I think as a hitter, anytime you’ve been working hard for a feeling or just working with one thing in mind, you like to see the result,” he said. “Obviously, that’s not always the case, but I’ve taken a lot of swings the last couple of days just trying to get my timing back and was able to get some good results tonight.” The Orioles added a run in the sixth inning on an RBI infield single by Manny Machado and another in the eighth on Seth Smith’s 11th home run of the year and second of the series. Helping hand Rangers center fielder Carlos Gomez thought he was going to come down with Davis’ long fly ball in the first inning, but the ball bounced off his glove and over the center-field fence for a two-run homer. It wasn’t exactly Jose Canseco head-butting the ball over the wall, but Orioles fans are not picky when it comes to lucky breaks these days. Trey Mancini also hit a two-run shot in the first to complete the six-run rally. Rude awakening Bundy came back from the 11-day break and was greeted by Rangers leadoff man Shin-Soo Choo with a home run into the Orioles bullpen behind right-center field. It probably felt like one of those here-we-go-again moments, but Bundy dispatched the next three batters in order and the Orioles offense went medieval on Rangers starting pitcher Tyler Ross in the bottom of the inning. Jones still leads On the face of it, the decision to move Adam Jones to the leadoff spot Friday doesn’t look so good. Sullivan / MLB.com July 19, 2017 BALTIMORE -- Chris Davis homered twice -- including a grand slam -- during a career-high six-RBI game as the Orioles' offense overwhelmed the Rangers during a 12-1 win on Tuesday night. Baltimore, trying to climb out of the American League East basement, is still in the mix for a playoff spot along with a Texas (45-48) team that has now dropped three in a row. "More than anything, it's just kind of that easiness. You can relax a little bit. Any time your offense has a game like tonight, I feel like everybody else can kind of take a deep breath and not stress so much," said Davis, of what the game could do for team morale. "I was proud everybody swung the bat tonight and we didn't give at-bats tonight. We stayed in there, and we got a positive result." After Shin-Soo Choo put Texas up with a leadoff homer to begin the game, Baltimore scored 12 unanswered runs. Most of those were charged to Rangers starter Tyson Ross, who lasted 3 1/3 innings and allowed nine runs (seven earned). "Tough way to play a baseball game," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "Obviously we were challenged from the first inning." Davis and the offense ensured the effort held up for a "W," striking first in a six-run first inning - - including Davis' two-run homer -- and again with his fourth-inning slam. Trey Mancini also had a two-run homer in the first inning and Seth Smith went deep for the second consecutive night in the eighth. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED The grand salami: With the Orioles up, 6-1, Davis put the game out of reach with his second multi-homer game of the season, a grand slam off Rangers right-hander Austin Bibens-Dirkx. The O's first baseman, who returned from an oblique injury on Friday, has always been a streaky hitter and could be on the verge of a hot stretch.

    Padding the Stats: A Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations Evan Hsia1, Jaewon Lee2 and Anton T. Dahbura3 Department of Computer Science Johns Hopkins University Abstract This paper presents the concept of Meaningless Game-Situations (MGS) in Major League Baseball (MLB), defined as situations in which a team has a 95% chance or greater of winning the game given the score at that particular inning in the game. We determine the run differentials for each inning that yield a 95% chance or greater of winning the game based on 2013-2016 MLB statistics and look at individual batter performances under MGS. We argue that including a split for MGS in major baseball statistical references should be considered. I. Introduction Hope springs eternal, especially in the game of baseball. But should it? Perhaps the absence of a game clock in baseball, unlike other major sports, creates the illusion that anything is possible, and in particular that one’s team can overcome even the largest of deficits, even late in the game. And, indeed, significant comebacks from behind are possible, but are so unlikely that in some cases they’re considered to be historic. For instance, in the game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies on June 8, 1989 the Pirates scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning. The Pirates’ radio broadcaster, Jim Rooker, proclaimed that if the Phillies were to come back from the 10-run deficit he would “walk home”.     SPORTS SATURDAY, MAY 6, 2017 Machado leads Orioles to win BOSTON: Manny Machado hit a long three- run shot for his third homer of the series and the Baltimore Orioles capped four tense days at Fenway Park with an 8-3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night. Machado hit a 466-foot drive over the Green Monster during a five-run fourth inning. Seth Smith had four of Baltimore’s 17 hits. In a four-game set marred by beanballs, brushbacks and racial rancor, the finale was a sedate affair decided in the fourth when the Orioles turned a two-run deficit into a 6-3 lead. Tyler Wilson (2-1) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings while making a spot start because scheduled pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez was forced to come out of the bullpen Wednesday. Boston right-hander Kyle Kendrick (0-1) made his season debut and allowed six runs and eight hits in four innings. Dustin Pedroia homered for the Red Sox- the first of the year for the 2008 AL MVP. NATIONALS 4, DIAMONDBACKS 2 Max Scherzer struck out a season-high 11 to bounce back from his worst outing this season, helping Washington to the victory. He also was 2 for 3 at the plate, driving in Washington’s first run with a sec- ond-inning infield single that pitcher Braden Shipley could not pick up with his bare hand.
