HISTORY The central depot for the first railroad linking California to the eastern states arrived in Oakland on November 8, 1869 at Broadway and 7th Street. Hotels, restaurants, barber shops, drug stores and other services for travelers sprang up in surrounding streets, and (what we now refer to as ‘Old Oakland’) became one of the most dynamic and diverse neighborhoods in Oakland. During the late 1800s Old Oakland was the place to be. It was here that City parades began and ended. It was home to the City’s best hotels, offices, stores, elegant restaurants and fine established businesses operated by wealthy entrepreneurs. Today, Old Oakland includes everything that makes a neighborhood complete: brick-lined sidewalks, beautiful architecture, tree-lined streets full of outdoor cafés, great restaurants, boutiques, coffee shops, galleries, bars, hotels, diversity and ambiance. BART and AC Transit accessible, with an authentic neighborhood feel and occasional block parties. LOCAL STANDOUTS • Spectacular Swan’s Market – showcases small, local businesses with some of the best food and wine in the Bay Area. Includes Miss Ollie’s, B-Dhama, Super Juiced, The Cook and Her Farmer, Hen House and Cosecha Café • Orginal Trappist – one of the highest rated beer places in the world • Friday Farmer’s Market – open year-round, features farm-fresh produce, food trucks, flowers, jewelry, clothing, crafts and live entertainment • Marion & Rose Fine Goods – boutique shop filled with handcrafted goods • Ratto’s – historic grocery store (dating back to 1897) and deli with outdoor seating, imported Italian food and gift items
