30th March 1843 Copy Certificate of Chargeability to (re William Nicholas & family)

This is to Certify that William Nicholas his wife and three children on the twenty fifth day of March instant became chargeable to the parish of Madron –

In token whereof I John Scobell the presiding Chairman of the Board of (Common Guardians of the Union by which Board the Laws for the relief of the Seal) poor at that time were and are still administered in the said parish have signed and I Edward Hearle Rodd acting as the Clerk of the said Board have countersigned this Certificate and we have applied the Common Seal of the said Board hereunto at a Meeting held this thirtieth day of Match 1843

Who saith as follows – The Certificate of Chargeability of William Nicholas his wife and family hereunto annexed was prepared by me at a Meeting of the Board of Guardians of the Penzance Union on the day it bears date – and the Signatures of the Chairman and acting Clerk was (sic) placed by them and the Common Seal of the Union affixed thereto by the Chairman in my presence at the said Meeting

Cornwall The Examination and Deposition of William Nicholas now residing in TO WIT of the parish of Madron in the said County, Laborer taken on Oath before

us two of Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace of and for the said County this Sixth day of April One thousand eight hundred and forty three

Who saith as follows – I am now about thirty two years of age. My parents names are Michael and Ann Nicholas – My father now resides at Lesbew in the parish of in the said County – about eight years since I married Alice my present wife in the parish Church of Sancreed aforesaid by whom I have three Children born in lawful wedlock viz. Mary Jane aged about Seven years William aged about five years and Richard aged about one year. I am now with my said Wife and family chargeable to the said parish of Madron – when I was Sixteen years of age I went to learn the trade of a Shoemaker with John Ellis then residing in the Church Town of the parish of Saint Just in in the said County Shoemaker – I was present when my father made the bargain with John Ellis that I should serve him for four years and my father was to pay him Four pounds as consideration money – my father paid Ellis Two pounds when I went to live with him – after I was with Ellis for two years my father paid him Two pounds as the Balance of the Money to be paid for learning me the Trade or business of a Shoemaker – I resided with John Ellis for three years and a half and during the whole of that time I generally slept and had my meal there – the reason I left Ellis before the Expiration of the four years was that I had a quarrel with his Children - and he desired me to leave – there was no Indenture or written agreement between us as to my Service with Ellis – I have done no Act save as aforesaid to gain a Settlement in my own right

6th April 1843 Examination of Michael Nicholas of Sancreed (re William Nicholas & family)

Cornwall The Examination and Deposition of Michael Nicholas now residing in TO WIT of the parish of Sancreed in the said County, Laborer taken on Oath before

us two of Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace of and for the said County this Sixth day of April One thousand eight hundred and forty three Who saith as follows – I am now about fifty eight years of Age and the father of the pauper William Nicholas who is now residing in and chargeable to the parish of Madron in the said County. When I was about twenty five years of age I married Ann my late wife in the parish Church of Saint Buryan in the said County. After our Marriage we resided at the village of Bolankan in the said parish of Saint Buryan where my said son William was born in the month of June thirty two years since. When I was about twenty three years of age I went to live with William Rowe late of Bolankan aforesaid Farmer as a yearly Servant at the wages of Ten Pounds per annum. I lived with William Rowe under that hiring for about two years and during the whole of that time I slept and resided in his Dwelling House at Bolankan aforesaid. I received my Wages during the time I was in his Service.

6th April 1843 Removal Order Madron to (William Nicholas & family)

To the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Madron in the CORNWALL said County, and to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the TO WIT parish of Saint Buryan in the County aforesaid and to each and every of them.

UPON the Complaint of the Churchwarden and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Madron unto us whose Names are hereunto set, and Seals affixed, two of Her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace, in and for the said County of Cornwall (and one of us of the Quorum), That William Nicholas Laborer with Alice his wife and their three Children viz. Mary Jane aged about seven years, William aged about five years and Richard aged about one year did lately come to inhabit in the said Parish of Madron not having gained a legal settlement there, nor produced any Certificate owning them to be settled elsewhere; and that the said William Nicholas, Alice his wife and their three Children are actually become chargeable to the said Parish of Madron We, the said Justices, upon due proof thereof, as well upon the examination of the said William Nicholas upon Oath as otherwise; and likewise upon due consideration had of the premises, do adjudge the same to be true, and we do likewise adjudge that the lawful settlement of the said William Nicholas, Alice his wife and their said three Children is in the said parish of Saint Buryan We do therefore require you the said Churchwarden and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Madron or some or one of you to convey the said William Nicholas, Alice his wife and their said three Children from and out of your said Parish of Madron to the said parish of Saint Buryan and them to deliver to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor there, or to some or one of them together with this our Order, or a true copy thereof, at the same time shewing to them the Original: And we do also hereby require you the said Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said parish of Saint Buryan to receive and provide for them as Inhabitants of your said parish according to the Statutes in such case made and provided. Given under our Hands and Seals, the Sixth day of April in the Year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and forty three

7th April 1843 Notice of Removal Order Madron to St Buryan (William Nicholas & family)

Parish of Madron in the County of Cornwall

In the matter of William Nicholas a Pauper

To the Overseers of the Poor of the parish of Saint Buryan in the County aforesaid

TAKE NOTICE that the above-named William Nicholas Laborer now residing in this Parish, has with Alice his wife and their three Children become chargeable to the said Parish of Madron and that an Order of Justices has been duly obtained for their removal to your said Parish of Saint Buryan as their last place of legal settlement (a Copy of which Order, and also a Copy of the Examination and Certificate of Chargeability on which the same was made, are herewith sent); and Take Notice, that unless you appeal against the said order, and, within twenty-one days from the date hereof, duly serve Notice of such Appeal, said Paupers will be removed to your said parish of Saint Buryan in pursuance of the said Order.
