SAINTSAINT ANTHONY ANTHONY OF OF PADUA PADUA Edwardstown Catholic Parish Address: 832 South Road, Edwardstown, South Australia 5039 Email: [email protected] Telephone: 0499 486 699 (message bank checked regularly– Website: www.edwardstowncatholic.net please note change to Parish Phone Number ) Facebook Page: : https://www.facebook.com/stanthony.edwardstown 12 / 13 June 2021 11TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR B/1 Parish Priest LETTER TO PARISHIONERS ON THE FEAST DAY OF ST ANTHONY Father Phillip Alstin Dear parishioners, Parish Secretary Today's solemnity is for the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time which takes precedence over the feast of our Robyn Grave beloved St Anthony of Padua, which happens to fall this year on the Sunday. Sundays are the Lord’s Day, the day of Resurrection, the first day of the week and has therefore its own Scripture readings and Parish Office Hours Tues - Fri 1:45pm - 4:30pm Propers quite apart from the saint's day. Even so, we acknowledge St Anthony on his special day in the Phone No: 0499 486 699 liturgical calendar and ask ourselves: what is it about Anthony we love and how can he help us face the [email protected] ordeals of our time? Parish Finance Council In answer to this question, we need to begin at the beginning, when Jesus Our Lord was conceived in the Geoff Walles 0419 810 590 womb of His Blessed Mother after she said 'yes' to the Archangel Gabriel. When Our Lady began the 130km walk to her cousin Elizabeth, the 5-day journey on foot, both women were 'with child'. So we Parish Pastoral Council begin to understand what God had planned for humanity, how this plan to save us would come to Kevin Mark fruition. St Anthony’s School By the 12th century, when St Anthony was preaching the fulfilment of God’s plan in sending us His Son Principal: Mr Stuart Baker for our salvation, the world had grown accustomed to the gentle persuasion and influence of the APRIM: Mrs Monica Doherty Church’s pro-life stance. Beginning with the end of the cruelty in the Roman amphitheatres, the end of Telephone: 8115 7500 infanticide (exposure to the cold unwanted infants), gradually attitudes changed, especially towards women and slaves, in particular. The Church later made herself responsible for the sick and poor and Mass Times religious houses and monasteries became centres of support. Men like Anthony, Francis and Dominic, Tuesday 9.30am and women like Clare of Assisi, knew this pastoral concern of the Church, should never be neglected but Wednesday 9.30am always understood as the sacrificial love Jesus spoke and lived. Thursday 9.30am Friday 9:30am St Anthony today would be leading the way in: pregnancy care and the support of expectant mothers, Saturday 9.30am abortion prevention, and post abortion healing support for those who have had an abortion. He would Dies Domini/ The Lord’s Day be completely supportive of maintaining the dignity and worth of all people, especially women and Saturday 6.00pm children. He would be speaking out against pornography in all its forms and abuse of any kind, including Sunday 9.30am the demeaning of people because of their race, culture and religion. He would support those under the influence of substance abuse. He would want us to care for the earth and be people of prayer and Sacrament of Reconciliation gratitude. Before and after Holy Mass and Wed 6:30pm In preparing to attend the funeral of our lovely neighbour next week, I considered how precious she was, in a life so far removed from all the usual clap trap we go on with these days. As I feed daily upon the 24-Hour Adoration turbulence of world events, Phoebe saw through the futility of the mass media. She was not politically correct. She did not engage in meaningless pursuits, never went overseas or holiday for that matter. She Starts 7:00pm Tuesdays loved her own backyard and all creatures who graced it. The youngest of a large family, most of whom 9:30am Mass (Wed) we had the pleasure of knowing, our lovely neighbour lived a simple uncomplicated life. Having made the 6:00pm Rosary (Wed) loving sacrifices necessary in caring for her aged parents and terminally ill sister, she was now the last to 6:30pm Vespers (Wed) leave for eternal life. And here's the thing, her death was as gentle and lovely as her life, a person whose Concludes with love drew those she knew to her. And because she left all things to God daily in her prayers, she knew 7:00pm Benediction (Wed) everything was in His hands including her beginning and now her end. At 101 years of age and knowing Contact for Adoration Phoebe for only 33 of those years, we were greatly blessed. Danica Rusov 0411 132 223 St Anthony would rejoice in this dear soul, her life and death. He would especially champion her right to Geoff Walles 0419 810 590 die in peace without 'assistance'. It was the generous love and support of her from her niece and nephew who gave her the caring assistance to the end.
