Clearwater Country Club Newsletter April 2021 Clearwater Country Club Newsletter April 2021 The coronovirus pandemic has effected golf in many ways. In the last twelve months playing golf has shown quite an upswing. From new golfers coming to the game, buying equipment, and taking lessons, we look forward to golf continuing to ride this bump for years to come. Plans for greens renovation this summer are still on schedule. We plan on doing the entire front nine greens and also the short game area. Two temporary greens will start on May 19 and if all goes according to plan, we should have all front nine greens sodded by July 1. A large turnout signed up for the Men's and Women's Club Championship this year. I want to thank all of the members who participated and congratulate all the winners and runners-up in each flight. Dahl Flynn and Lisa Hartley both defended their titles in the Championship Flights. Congratulations to all who participated. We recently made a change in our Golf Course Superintendent. Derek Queener will now be in charge, while Edgar Perez is the foreman. These two individuals have always been dedicated to CCC. See you around the club, Greg McClimans, P.G.A. The number of contestants continued the upward trend of Front Office ext 101 the last few years and reached 46 this year after 32 in Bar & Restaurant ext 105 '20, 17 in '19 and 16 in '18. The number of contestants on the ladies side tripled this year! Both of the defending champions repeated. Dahl Flynn won his match 2&1 over 2018 Champ Chris Georgopulos for his third title in a row and Lisa Hartley won her match Drink Recipe of the Month: 4&2 over newcomer Peggy Taylor. This win was Lisa's third in a row and eleventh overall! Tillinghast and opened for play on Sept. 8, 1923. Tillinghast, who also designed Winged Foot’s East Course, competed in two U.S. Opens and eight U.S. Amateurs between 1902 and 1912. Gill Hanse supervised a renovation of the West Course and that work was completed in 2017. He had previously renovated the East Course. Trenham 1980 to 1989 1980 The Section had another first as the new Senior PGA Tour held its first event at the Atlantic City CC in June. 1981 Dick Smith, Sr. won the 60th Philadelphia PGA Section Championship at the Cavaliers Country Club in October. 1982 Dick Smith, Sr. won his fourth Philadelphia PGA Section Championship at Huntingdon Valley C.C. in September. 1983 Charlie Bolling won the South African Open in late January. 1984 Rick Osberg tied for third in the PGA Club Professional Championship in October. 1985 Ed Dougherty won the PGA Club Professional Championship in October. 1986 In December Dick Smith, Sr. was elected secretary of the PGA of America at the national meeting in Indianapolis. 1987 The Philadelphia pros defeated the Middle Atlantic Section to make it 12 wins for Philadelphia against 6 losses. 1988 The Philadelphia PGA Section Championship prize money was $100,000 for the first time. 1989 In April Jimmy Booros won on the PGA Tour at the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic. 1980 A new decade began with golf booming. The PGA Tour purses were rapidly increasing and most of the tournaments were televised. There were concerns that there was too much golf being shown on TV. Playing the PGA Tour was a distant thought for most club pros. People were retiring earlier and more women were taking up the game so the rounds of golf were increasing each year. Senior golf was becoming very popular and the Philadelphia Section was in on another first, as the Atlantic City Country Club would host the first official tournament of the new Senior PGA Tour.

    ������ ��� � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � ������� ����� ���� ����������� December 2006 Three Inducted into Florida Golf Hall of Fame On Friday, November 17, the FSGA inducted three deserving men into the Florida Golf Hall of Fame at the 2006 Annual Dinner at Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club in Tampa. Gary Koch, Bob Rankin and Bill Baker were honored as the second class of inductees into the Hall of Fame. Gary Koch began his golf career early on in 1969 winning the Florida Open at the age of 16. From 1968-1970, Gary won three straight Florida Junior Championships and won the US Junior Championship in 1970. He then captured the Florida Amateur in 1972 and went on to the University of Florida where he was a three-time first team All American and a member of the 1973 NCAA Championship team. In 1975, Gary joined the PGA Tour and won six events over 15 years. Now on the Champions Tour and part of the NBC golf announce team, Gary also keeps busy with his golf course design and development business. In 1992, the Governor of Florida named him the “Ambassador of Golf.” Bob Rankin played college golf at Ohio State University and won the 1955 Ohio Amateur. After moving to Florida, Bob won the Florida Amateur in 1969 and Mid-Senior in 1972. Other FSGA Championships include the 1989 Senior Four-Ball Championship and 1992 and 1994 Senior Championship. He won Gasparilla twice, the Florida State Senior Golf Association Championship three times and US Senior Challenge Championship four times including three con- secutive years. Bob, a founding member of Cypress Run Golf Club in Tarpon Springs, was inducted into the Ohio Golf Hall of Fame in 1996.
