Gary Hoffman joined the Jackrabbits in January of 1980. He was defensive coach in 1980, then moved to the offensive line last season. A veteran coach, he has had stops at west Lyon Community SchOol in Inwood, la.; Sleepy Eye and Farmington high schools in Minnesota; plus Sioux Falls College, Sioux Falls Washington and Augustana College, all in Sioux Falls, sinte graduating from westmar College in 1966. He was head coach at Sioux Falls College for three years and counted among his players Rick Danmeier, now place kicker for the . He was working for Gopher Athletic Suppy before join­ ing the SDSU staff. A 1962 graciuate of Danube, Minn., High School, Hoffman earned his Master's Degree from the University of south Dakota in 1971. Hoffman and his wife, Kathryn, have two children.

Larry Ireland joined the SDSU staff during the summer of 1981, and was named coor­ dinator of recruiting after Haensel became head coach last November. A graduate of Scotland High School, Ireland attended Yankton College where he was all-Tri State con­ ference defensive back three times. After graduating from YC in 1968, he earned his Master's Degree from the University of South Dakota in 1969, then coached and taught at Pierre and Gregory before becoming head football coach at Hot Springs in 1973. His teams won Black Hills conference championships in 1974 and 1976, and he was named south Dakota Football coach of the year in 1974 by members of the south Dakota High School Football coaches Association. From there Ireland went to Mitchell for two years before becoming an assistant coach at Augustana in 1978. His overall record as head coach shows 43 victories against just 29 defeats and one tie. Ireland and his wife, sandy, have three children.

BRAD ERICKSON ...... RECEIVERS

In his seventh year on the Jackrabbit staff, Brad Erickson coaches the receivers and is also head swimming coach for men and women. He has guided a string of standout wide receiver candidates including former all-conference performer Lionel Macklin and current standout Mike Ethier. In swimming, his 1979 team won the North central con­ ference championship for men and his 1981 women's team also won a conference title. over one three-year span, the SDSU women's team won 20 of 24 duals. Erickson is a 1974 graduate of SDSU where he won three NCC swimming titles, helping SDSU rise from an also-ran to an NCC title contender. He was the first SDSU swimmer ever to qualify for a national championship meet. Erickson was a graduate student at SDSU during the 1974-75 school year, then spent a year at the Rapid City YMCA before returning to SDSU. Erickson and his wife, Jenny, have one child. Erickson is a native of Arlington, SD.

The newest member of the Jackrabbit staff is former all-NCC nose guard Don Charlson. A native of Sioux City and graduate of Sioux City Heelan <1973). He was starting nose guard for SDSU for three seasons <1975-77> before earning his Bachelor's Degree in 1978 and adding his Master's Degree in 1979. After leaving SDSU, he served two years as defensive coordinator at Yankton College, then became head coach at westmar college in LeMars, la., last season, guiding the Eagles to a 5-4 record, winning five of the last six games. WNAX Is a member of the Roy H. Park Broadcasting group. on the air 24-hours a day, WNAX Is a 5,000watt station which covers much of a five state area . It is located at 570 on the A.M. dial. "Voice of the Jackrabbits" Norm Hilson will again do the play-by-play with Jerry Oster providing the color commentary. Hilson has been south Dakota Sportscaster of the Year five times, three times as picked by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and one as selected by the south Dakota High School coaches Association. HIison has been with WNAX for 20-pIus years since giving up a disc Jockey Job In the Twin Cities. He is a graduate of Brown Broadcasting Institute In Min­ neapolis. He Is a native of Valley City, ND. Hilson travels about 15,000 miles annually broadcasting sports events, in­ cluding all SDSU football and basketball games along with an area prep "Game of the Week" plus district, regional and state prep tournaments and action throughout the football playoffs Including all five of the championship games. And even when SDSU home games are a trip for Hllson--lt's 270 miles round trip from Yankton to Brookings. WNAX is the only radio station which has orglnated play-by-play broadcasts of every game played In the history of the state high schOol girls basketball tournament. In addition to SDSU and high school events carried on WNAX, the station Is a member of the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings radio networks. This fall, WNAX will also carry five Yankton games along with a cou­ ple University of Nebraska·games. In fact, on Dec. 4, WNAX could set some sort of record for continuous sports broadcasting. That day they will do play by Play of the final round of the girls state basketball tournament, then pick up the SDSU men's basketball game from Bozeman, Mont., a game which has a 9 p.m. tip-off In the central time zone; then follow that with the university of Nebraska football game from Hawaii.
