Combing for beach trash, Sarah Johansen recognised the familiar figure of Dr Dylan Turner, the oncology registrar at Christchurch Hospital who cared for her mother, Heather Patterson. He was unaware his patient had died while he was on leave. ‘‘I didn’t expect to see Dylan there,’’ she said. ’’I thought, I’m not going to approach him because having family members of patients coming up might be a bit awkward.
