A serendipitous encounter at Sustainable Coastlines’ New Brighton beach clean-up last week resulted in a young volunteer who came to honour the legacy of her mother who died of cancer two weeks earlier stumbling across the ’’compassionate’’ doctor who treated her during the final gruel- ling weeks. Combing for beach trash, Sarah Johansen recognised the familiar figure of Dr Dylan Turner, the oncology registrar at Christchurch Hospital who cared for her mother, Heather Patterson. He was unaware his patient had died while he was on leave. ‘‘I didn’t expect to see Dylan there,’’ she said. ’’I thought, I’m not going to approach him because having family members of patients coming up might be a bit awkward. No earthquake can stop the Waiau Wonder Rally and this year it was all about giving back to the host. Hundreds of riders roared into the North Canterbury township over the weekend for the annual Wonder Rally hosted by the Waiau Lodge Hotel and Christ- church’s Plains Motorcycle Club (PMC), raising more than $15,000 for Waiau’s earthquake regener- ation. PMC president Greg Johns said the club was proud to give back to the community that always welcomed them. ‘‘This year, everything is being donated to the school pool. But we’re putting the word out that any of the other organisations or charities in Waiau that are look- ing for funds can contact us.’’ Johns said PMC helped kick the rally ‘‘back into gear’’ along with previous hotel owner Blair Allpress. ‘‘The rally had been here at Waiau for many years before but it started to die off. It was called the Wonder Rally because people wondered if it was going to be on.’’ The rallies were usually a fundraiser for rural fire brigades – the reason being obvious. ‘‘We do a lot of riding in these sorts of areas, and if you arse off it’s them that’s going to come and rescue you,’’ Johns said. Bowranda Patio Roof

The Unique Bowranda patio roof allows you to create another room outdoors. The Bowranda can be installed as a roof only or the finishing touches added with Roller blinds in acrylic awning fabric, sunscreen mesh fabric or clear or tinted PVC providing the protection that you require from sun, wind, rain and UV.

The Bowranda patio roof is constructed of powder coated aluminium and stainless steel fixings to ensure it will withstand coastal conditions. Eliminates 99% of UV whilst maintaining ambient light. This is important as it provides protection from the sun without darkening the area, including the adjacent interior.

The square profile of the roof line provides a pleasing aesthetic as it conforms to the lineal nature of residential architecture.
