Beatty played with John Onstott, Billy Eisenberg and Garey Hayden. Despite trailing 60-5 after the opening quarter, the tough Beatty squad never quit, pulling to within 15 IMPs in the final quarter. A missed game and a slam swing ended their hopes of an upset, however. Beatty and com- pany actually won the second, third and fourth quarters, but their cumulative gains amounted to only 14 IMPs. Four of the Nickell team’s Spingold victories -- the consecutive wins from 1993 through 1996 -- were with Bobby Wolff instead of Soloway.
