By Lynn Berg Dorothy Case is not a snow bird, even though she is here at the tournament from Anchorage AK. She plans to return home on Tuesday after spending a few days with her physician brother, who lives in Orlando. But she came here to play bridge, arriving Monday and staying for the week. Dorothy, who worked for 30 years for the school system in Alaska, learned to play bridge five years ago. This is her first NABC. She is here not because it is in Orlando, near family, but because she has just retired and it’s the first NABC since her retirement: her brother’s being nearby is “a bonus,” she says. Playing on Wednesday evening, Dorothy said she was “tired but excited.” She has played with pick-up partners all week, winning the Flight C in a 74-table Swiss (“Wow!” she says), and also doing well in the I/N room. Her husband, a non-bridge player, was off on a field trip to “swim with the manatees” while Dorothy played bridge. She was excited about playing with Canadian Pro Ken Gee on Thursday, and planning to stay on and pick up more partners for the final days of the tournament. Many players around the country think the NABC is all about the big national events and platinum points. But 199er players like Dorothy who come to an NABC know that there’s something for every level and interest in Orlando.

To the Management of the Marriott World Resort with Gratitude

Ladies and Gentlemen:

We cannot adequately express our appreciation for the reception you have given the American League and the thousands of its members during the North American Bridge Championships these past 10 days. Your physical plant is awesome, your organizational skills unsurpassed and your entire staff superb, from top management to the telephone operators. We would especially like to commend the following: Peter Kacheras, Hotel Manager; Bill Elgan, Conventions Manager; Bill Hurst, Sales Manager; Tim Speller, Senior Event Manager; Bill Adams, Senior Event Manager; Judy and the staff on the phones, and Trina and all the staff on the front desk. The fact that we have singled out a few does not diminish the extraordinary quality of the entire organization. After many years of national championships, we do not recall your equal anywhere in the nation. We are grateful and thank you. Most cordially yours, Carolyn Raphaelson and Jayne Thomas, Tournament Co-Chairman Marlene Passell and Bette Cohn, Entertainment Co-Chairman District 9
