The Boston Red Sox Sunday, April 1, 2018 * The Boston Globe Xander Bogaerts stays hot, lifts Red Sox over Rays Peter Abraham ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — It was only a week into spring training when new Red Sox hitting coach Tim Hyers watched Xander Bogaerts taking batting practice and knew something had changed. Bogaerts was driving the ball into the gaps with seemingly every other swing. There was a purpose to what he was doing. “Xander had the right goals,” Hyers said. “I had talked to him a couple of times before spring training and the things he wanted to do and the adjustments he wanted to make, I couldn’t have said it better.” Bogaerts asked for guidance in how to accomplish that, but the framework was there. Working with the coaches, he modified his stance to feel stronger in his lower half so he could generate more power through the hips. That allowed him to more easily get the ball in the air, something Hyers helped emphasize by showing Bogaerts video of the aggressive swing he had as a hot-shot Double A prospect in 2012 and ’13. That Bogaerts could grip the bat how he wanted helped, too. He played the second half of last season with a badly bruised right hand after he was hit by a pitch on July 6. He hit .232 after the injury with scant power. Bogaerts too often took pitches down the middle and when he did make contact, the ball usually stayed on the ground. “We don’t ever know how that affects a player,” Hyers said.

The Boston Red Sox Saturday, April 18, 2020 * The Boston Globe Fenway Park is ready to play ball, even though we are not Stan Grossfeld The grass is perfect and the old ballpark is squeaky clean — it was scrubbed and disinfected for viral pathogens for three days in March. Spending a few hours at Fenway Park is good for the soul. The ballpark is totally silent. The mound and home plate are covered by tarps and the foul lines aren’t drawn yet, but it feels as if there still could be a game played today. The sun’s warmth reflecting off The Wall feels good. The tug of the past is all around but the future is the great unknown. In Fenway, zoom is still a word to describe a Chris Sale fastball, not a video conferencing app. Old friend Terry Francona and the Cleveland Indians would have been here this weekend and there would’ve been big hugs by the batting cage and the rhythmic crack of bat meeting ball. But now gaining access is nearly impossible and includes health questions and safety precautions and a Fenway security escort. Visitors must wear a respiratory mask, gloves, and practice social distancing, larger than the lead Dave Roberts got on Mariano Rivera in the 2004 ALCS. Carissa Unger of Green City Growers in Somerville is planting organic vegetables for Fenway Farms, located on the rooftop of the park. She is one of the few allowed into the ballpark. The harvest this year all will be donated to a local food pantry.

  • If White Sox Right-Hander Hector Noesi
NOESI TURNS IN FLAWLESS CACTUS LEAGUE DEBUT By Scott Merkin / MLB.com GLENDALE, Ariz. -- If White Sox right-hander Hector Noesi pitched as well for the Mariners as he has against the Mariners over the past year, then the right-hander might still be pitching for the Mariners. Over two starts with the White Sox in 2014 against one of his former teams, Noesi allowed one unearned run during 14 innings. Noesi picked up right where he left off in Saturday's Cactus League debut by retiring all six Seattle hitters faced at Camelback Ranch, throwing 18 strikes among his 28 pitches. But Noesi doesn't consider it extra motivation when facing the Mariners. "It's not motivated. I was telling some friends in the training room that I should pitch to every team like I pitch to them," said a smiling Noesi. "I'm gonna take that for this year because it's not that I have a feeling for them, but I always try to go there for them because I don't want them to say, 'Oh, that's why we put him on waivers,' you know. "I want everybody to see that it's not. You have to learn and get better and better every time. It's not going to be that easy." Those past struggles with the Mariners and briefly with the Rangers seem to have helped Noesi develop with the White Sox. The team's fourth or fifth starter recorded three outs by ground ball and three by fly ball Saturday, while working on getting the fastball inside to both right-handed and left-handed hitters as stressed during recent side sessions by pitching coach Don Cooper.

  • Pitching Development
Pitching Development Sections of this document: This document is structured around the core components of a good pitching delivery. Each section of the delivery will include 4 things: 1. Written description of proper technique 2. Suggested drills to reinforce either individually or with the team 3. Relevant links to supporting content online (preferably youtube videos to demonstrate the point) 4. Common pitfalls with players, things to look out for, suggestions on how to communicate with the player If you’ve watched a major league game, it is obvious there is more than one way to skin a cat when it comes to pitching deliveries. Funky deliveries abound and any pitching guide needs to recognize a couple of things: 1. Every pitcher is different and will have some elements of their delivery hard-wired into them (I would suggest because of their physiology) that will be difficult to change. Case studies of really good pitchers whose delivery you probably wouldn’t try to copy: a. Clayton Kershaw – double leg kick b. Alex Wood – initial arm path and front side direction c. Madison Bumgarner – arm swing and cross-fire d. Chris Sale – where to start? 2. What does the perfect delivery look like? “Perfect” is relative to each pitcher, but for those who find that answer maddeningly unsatisfying I recommend looking at Youtube videos for: Mariano Rivera Pedro Martinez Jose Quintana Matt Harvey Max Scherzer 3. There are some elements of the delivery that are “negotiable” (e.g., starting position), while others are not (e.g., closed front side) 4. You as a coach will need to focus on the “non-negotiable” elements of the delivery while trying to get a feel for how hard to push on the “negotiable” elements.
