Building for Art’s Sake World-class museums no longer stake their reputations on art and artifacts alone; the museum building itself must be viewed as an architectural treasure. Along with surging visitor numbers and swelling collections, this trend is driving a spate of major museum projects in New York, New York, USA; London, England; and theEd ge Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Te projects expand, The Louvre Abu Dhabi, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, is move or build new branches of some of the world’s leading muse- slated for a December 2015 opening. ums—and face challenges ranging from unusual building sites to allegations of labor abuses. Te €400 million Louvre Abu Dhabi designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, slated for a December 2015 opening, and the US$800 million Guggenheim Abu Dhabi designed by U.S. architect Frank Gehry, scheduled to open in 2017, are prime examples. Branches of the original Guggenheim and Louvre museums in New York and Paris, France, respectively, the proj- ects are central components of the UAE government’s planned “cultural district” on Saadiyat Island. Because the two museums will be surrounded by water on three sides, engineering hurdles are substantial. Te largest challenge facing Saadiyat’s three museum proj- ects—the Zayed National Museum is scheduled to open in 2016, with assistance from the British Museum in London—is putting to rest international concern about widespread abuses of migrant workers, including poor living conditions, unpaid wages and forced labor. “I therefore call on the UAE government, but also on all companies involved in the Saadiyat project—including [the] Louvre, British Museum and Guggenheim—to ensure that any form of mistreatment is addressed and that all migrants can fully enjoy their human rights,” Barbara Lochbihler, chair of the European Parliament’s subcom- mittee on human rights, said in December 2013.

TRAVEL Burj Al Arab: The only 7-Star Hotel in the World by Engr. Chin Mee Poon, FIEM, P. Eng. ON our way back from Scotland, my wife and I stopped over at Dubai for three nights to see how much the place has progressed since our last visit in 2002. Dubai is a tiny emirate situated near the tip of a promontory of the Arabic Peninsula that separates the Persian Gulf from the Gulf of Oman. It is the second largest of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, one of the richest Arabic countries. Before oil was discovered in the 1960s, Dubai was poor and its people lived a nomadic life in a desert environment. In less than half a century, the desert land on both sides of Another first is, of course, the well-known Burj Al Arab, the Dubai Creek has been transformed into a large oasis of often touted as the world’s only 7-star hotel. Dubai’s Museum Types: A Structural Analytic John Biln and Mohamed El-Amrousi This is a pre-print version of the following article, published in print form and available online: http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/berghahn/armw/2014/00000002/00000001/art00007. Biln, John, and Mohamed El-Amrousi. “Dubai’s Museum Types: A Structural Analytic.” Museum Worlds: Advances in Research 2 (2014): 99-112. Abstract Dubai is often characterized as a city of artificiality and repackaged public spaces – a city without a past. The old historic Dubai has essentially disappeared, lost in the shadows of iconic resort projects and popular shopping malls. This article asks the following question: how do Dubai’s museums function in relation to an urban field for the most part bereft of historical fabric, and in which the history that is made visible within the public realm is largely fictional or highly sanitized? We argue that to make sense of the ways history is represented and circulated in Dubai’s public spaces, the traditional categories of ‘museum’ should be extended to include both large-scale history-themed malls and small heritage houses. Taken altogether, Dubai’s museums and museum-like institutions constitute a conceptually complete and closed system that manages to ‘resolve’ the apparent paradox of an urban context characterized by absence and historical loss, in which, paradoxically, expressions of historical fullness are everywhere. The rapid urban development and commercial repackaging of public space in Dubai has resulted in a city of overwhelming artificiality. Iconic projects such as the Palm Island, Burj al-Arab, Burj Dubai (now Burj Khalifa) have collectively given a compelling image to Dubai’s global pretensions.
