YORK REGION DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD SCHOOL YEAR CALENDARS 2018-2019
Background
Ontario Regulation 304, School Year Calendar, Professional Activity Days, requires the Board to prepare, adopt and submit to the Ministry of Education, a proposed school year calendar for the schools under its jurisdiction.
The regulation indicates the conditions governing the structure of the school year. The major conditions are as follows:
minimum number of schools days 194 minimum number of instructional days 187 maximum number of Professional Activity days 7 maximum number of examination days 10 Christmas Vacation – two (2) complete weeks including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day Mid-Winter Break – five (5) consecutive days commencing on the Monday next following the Friday preceding the 14th day of March
Rationale
The proposed school year calendar is similar to the calendar being considered by York Catholic District School Board. Consultation has occurred with Community and International Education Services, York Region - Ontario Principals’ Council, Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario and Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation, and they have provided input.
Other Greater Toronto Area (GTA) boards will continue to have variation in the scheduling of Professional Activity (PA) Days, examination days and selected holidays to meet their local needs. For the 2018-19 year, we are able to accommodate for the Municipal Election on October 22, 2018 with one of the Board-directed Professional Activity days in most schools.
Keswick High School, Markville Secondary School, Maple High School and Sutton District High School propose a modified school year that begins Monday, August 27, 2018 with a mid-term break the week of Monday, October 29 – Friday, November 2, 2018. All other aspects of their calendar are the same as the system calendar.
Bill Crothers Secondary School will also follow a modified school year. Bill Crothers Secondary School starts Tuesday, August 7, 2018 and will have Thursday, August 30, 2018, Friday, August 31, 2018, Friday, October 5, 2018, Monday, October 29 to Friday, November 2, 2018, Friday, December 7, 2018, and Monday, April 8, 2019 to Friday, April 12, 2019 as holidays.

This report supports the stewardship of Board Resources by demonstrating professionalism and accountability of high standards of practice in all board operations.
Timeline:
Immediate – Ministry Regulations require submission of modified school year calendars by March 1, 2018. As per past practice, all calendars will be submitted by this date.
Recommendations
That the York Region District School Board approve the following recommendations regarding the 2018-2019 School Year Calendar.
1. That the 2018-2019 school year for elementary and secondary schools operating on a regular schedule shall consist of 194 days with students commencing school on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 and include the following:
a) the designation of 187 Instructional Days commencing Tuesday, September 4, 2018 in the School Year Calendar 2018-2019; b) the last school day for secondary students be Wednesday, June 26, 2019 and Thursday, June 27, 2019 for elementary students; and c) the designation of seven Professional Activity Days in the School Year Calendar 2018-2019.
2. That Keswick High School, Maple High School, Markville Secondary School and Sutton District High School (early start secondary schools) operate on a modified version of the regular schedule commencing school one week earlier on Monday, August 27, 2018 and taking a one-week mid-term break commencing Monday, October 29, 2018 to Friday, November 2, 2018. The last school day for early start students will be Wednesday, June 26, 2019.
3. That Bill Crothers Secondary School (balanced calendar) operate on a modified version of the regular schedule commencing school on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 and have Thursday, August 30, 2018, Friday, August 31, 2018, Friday, October 5, 2018, Monday, October 29, 2018 to Friday, November 2, 2087, Friday, December 7, 2018, and Monday, April 8, 2019 to Friday, April 12, 2019, as holidays. The last school day for Bill Crothers students will be Wednesday, June 19, 2019.
4. That the school holidays be as follows.
