Primarily a figurative painter, his works responded to the world around him and his own life experiences, and they often reflected critically on society. During his career he played an active role in art politics, particularly in the 1940s, writing influential articles about the direction of art in Australia. He also held prominent positions within the art community, including President of the Contemporary Art Society in the late 1940s and again in the 1960s. Tucker grew up during the Depression and began his career as a young artist in the late 1930s, in the years leading up to the outbreak of World War II. At this time, his world was defined by financial insecurity, social inequality and war, and these concerns became the catalyst for much of his painting.

    When the Australian expressionist painter Gil Jamieson died last year at 58, he had completed a passionate journey away from and back to himself. The journey finished where it had begun, in his home town of Monto. He had originally left the small Central Queensland town for Melbourne in the late fifties to begin a career which has yet to be fully appreciated . Though he is represented in the Australian National Gallery, Canberra, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Queensland Art Gallery and elsewhere, including numerous publications, his distaste for the politics and limelight of the art scene kept him on the publicity periphery over the past few decades. Patronage and the admiration of fellow artists and critics was how Gil Jamieson and his public tended to find each other. A self promoter he was not. The work must speak for itself, he insisted. But because the work was always so powerful and engaging, it somehow always found people to speak for it. I have been lucky enough to have been one of those people over the past decade, as a journalist and a friend. I met Gil in Monto in 1979 and soon developed a friendship based on mutual artistic understanding ... and misunderstanding . He thrived on a dialectic of challenge and response and though often aggressive as an intellectual adversary, he always kept a keen sense of humour . ~ 58 I wrote and published verse and my new found friend soon began to refer to me as 'a poet with a liquidity problem'. The fact that writers tended not to make much money out of journalism or creative work was not important, he insisted.

His father, an Irishman transported for an agrarian offence, settled as a farmer after his release, but was continually hounded by the police and is supposed to have died as a result of ill treatment by them. His widow was left with eight children. It seems that the Kellys were a marked family, and Ned grew up with a deep sense of in­ justice, and a personal hatred of the police and their method. In April 1878, Ned and his brother, Dan, went bush to avoid arrest. Joe Byrne and Steve Hart accompanied them. From April to October they gold-mined at Stringybark Creek, where three of four policemen, sent to hunt them down, were killed. Sergeant Kennedy, fatally wounded, being shot by Ned. Within a week an act of parliament outlawed the gang. In December they robbed the Euroa bank of £2,000, and in February 1879 the Jerilderie bank in southern New South Wales. Armour for the four and a helmet for Ned were forged: an informer, Aaron Sherritt, was shot dead by Joe Byrne, his former friend.
