Arrived in the colony 1857 on the sailing ship "Marion"which was built in 1834 in Calcutta. Master of the ship was P D Blyth it left London 21 September 1856 arrived Port Adelaide 19 January 1857 via Plymouth 8 October 1856. "Willunga Place of Green Trees" A small township, including a small Wesleyan Chapel, and having a population of about a hundred people, sprang up about the quarry. Many of the quarry men who worked there came fromt he Delabole quarry in Cornwall, while other hailed from Anerican quarries.

The original home "Seaview" in Mary Street Willunga is still standing and is National Trust

Jane married John ALLEN son of Joseph ALLEN and Mary Ann COMMON on 12 Jan 1857 in St Stephens Church, Willunga, South Australia. John was christened on 6 Oct 1833 in Roche, Cornwall, England. He died on 2 Mar 1917 in Willunga, South Australia.

Arrived 1847 Duchess of Northumberland Occupation Draper, Farmer, Slate Quarry Owner Residence Adelaide, Willunga Religion C/E "Willunga Profile" On his return from the gold diggings in Victoria, John Allen, who had bought the Delabole slate quarry, later secured Waverley Park where he became a producer of lambs on a fairly large scale. The property remained in the Allen family until his grand daughter Miss Maude Allen, bequeathed it to the Willunga District Council. It is now known as the Herbert Allen Memorial Park in memory of her father. A golf course and other recreational facilities ar being established there now. A large photgraph of the house in its park setting hangs in Australia House in London. Sampson Dawe owned and operated this quarry from the 1840's until 1855. He had named it after a famous slate quarry in Cornwall. The new owner was John Allen, of Waverley Park, Willunga who sold it in 1860 but 12 years later bought it back from the Delabole Slate Co of Adelaide. During the company's period of ownership, a small village was built at the quarry. When back in control, John Allen supplied large quantities of roofing slate for many Adelaide buildings including the G.P.O., the Town Hall, the Museum and the Bank of Adelaide. Mr Allen gained a number of certificates of merit at the Sydney and Melbourne International Exhibitions in 1879 and 1880 and at the Adelaide Exhibition in 1881. Mr Allen sold the property in 1903 and it has not been used for quarrying again. "

"Life must be a sort of eathly paradise to Mr and Mrs John Allen, of Waverley Park, Willunga, who celebrated their diamond weddign in the Willunga Agricultural Hall on January 12 in the presence of more than 100 guestsThis wonderful old couple - for he is 83 , and she is 86- who have trod life's pathway together for 60 years, are spending their remaining years in the peaceful and beautiful seclusionof their picturesque home at Willunga, Mr. Allen is a find type of the old school of English gentlemen, broad minded and generous in the widest interpreetation of these words, and gifted with the noble trait that if he could not do anybody good he would do them no harm. His wife possesses a lovable personality, strongly developed by her constant endeavour to think more of others than of herself. She is gifted with exuberant spirits, and a desire tolive, characteristic of an unselfish temperament. Many people can recal happy times spent at Waverley Park. " A Good Record" Curiously enough, Mr. and Mrs. Allen were born in the same county (Cornwall); they came to Australia in the same ship: and married 10 years after their arrival. Born in Roche, Cornwall, in 1833, Mr. Allen journeyed to this province in the ship Duchess of Northumberland, in 1847. Coming to Adelaide, he joined Messrs. Adam and Archibald Jaffrey's drapery establishment, Waterloo House- on the site of Miller Anderson Limited's present premises in Hindley street. He stayed there for four years, when the lure of the gold fields attracted him to the Ballarat diggings in 1852. Three months' prospecting there brought him good luck, and he returned to South Australia,

Ten years ago the venerable couple made a short trip to England, just before the celebration of their golden wedding. Mr. Allen has always taken an active interest in local movemnents. He was amember of the School Board of Advice for 25 years and has been associated with the local agricultural society, recreation ground, and the Anglican Church. he is still a trustee of the Oddfellows' Lodge and is also one of the oldest justices of the peace. "Fruits of Hard Work" "To what do you attribute your good health?" a representative of The Register asked the old gentleman on Friday night. "Hard work" was the laconic answer. "I travelled between Willunga and Adelaide as a carrier of slate from my own quarries for 45 years, in addition to directing farming operations. When on the road I looked after myself. If it was raining. I always carried a dry suit of clothes to put on in case of emergency I consider I have led a useful life." Ther is no doubt about that. Mr. Allen enjoys good health, except for occasional slight attacks of gout. "Paying Homage" It must have been a memorable event for the aged hosts on Friday evening to have witnessed their old friends gathered around them. Nobody enjoyed the function more than they did. As the guests entered the hall, husband and wife - as happy as they were 60 years ago - went through a long succession of handshakes, and received innumerable congratulations. After the reception, the Rev. T. Wood was appointed Chairman for the evening. Mr. H Allen, in (sic) behalf of the family, thanked the quests for having paid homage to their esteemed parents. A musical programme was then provided by Miss Marjorie Ware, and Messrs. Robert Lawrance, J.J. Sharp, and George Ware. Miss Lawrance was the accompanist. Dancing was also idulged in. "Enthusiastic Toasts" At supper, after the loyal toast had been honoured, Mr. Wood proposed the health of Mr. and Mrs Allen. The toast was enthusiastically observed. Ten years ago, he said, they had met for their hosts golden wedding, and that period had passed rapidly. Their presence was a guarantee of their respect for Mr and Mrs Allen. who had always conferred great benefits upon the community. Mr Herbert Allen in responding for his parents, expressed their delight at the sight of so many old friends seated at the table. He was sorry that Mr Vinrace Lawrance and Mr W P Dunk two of his father's associates had not been able to attend, but they were pleased to have Mr H C H Denton, Mr Sharp two visitors to his fathers place, and Mr J M Snoswell, who could remember his father better than anybody else present. Messrs Frederick Allen and Hurtle Allen aslo replied. Mr Robert Lawrance who has returned to South Australia after an absence in England of 24 years, spoke for his father Mr Vinrace Lawrance After such a long absence he had take the first opportunity to visit Mr and Mrs Allen's home where he had spent so many happy days. He hoped the old couple would live for years to enjoy good health. At the instance of Mr Denton the health of te Boys at the front among whom are sons of Messrs G Ware and Frederick Allen was honoured.

Francis Reed had a small property at Mundoora and use to go out working, His sons, Tom & Newton also used to go out working and his daughter, Frances use to live with Grandma Chapman.

19 Mar 2013 Descendants of Thomas REED Page 10 Mark and the twins, Lily & Rose were at home when their mother died, they were 10 years old and their sister Frances and Aunt Agnes Willsmore took them to Grandma Chapman to live until they left school. Tom and Newton Reed took up land at Mitchellville near Cowell and built a house. The girls then went and lived with them. Francis Reed did not work on the farm, but did in busy times. Francis Reed died when the twins were teenagers. When the first World War broke out, Mark enlisted, and went overseas and was killed in action in france in 1916 aged 24 years Newton also enlisted and was in the 9th Light Horse Regiment. In 1963 Lily Watson and Rose Farnworth from Bessenham West Australia (the Reed twins) came over to South Australia, for a holiday and stayed with Mable Hunt (Mrs John Grant) and they also visited Cliff and Len Reed and families at Willunga.

Francis married Harriet CHAPMAN daughter of William CHAPMAN and Rhoda Harrison HART on 2 Jul 1879 in Registry Office, Morphett Vale. Harriet was born in 1852 in Cambridge England. She died about 1905. She was buried in Keilli Cemetery near Mundoora. They had the following children:

He was admitted 16 Nov 1916 died 25 Nov 1916. He was suffering from Multiple Gun Shot wounds, and was unable to withstand the effects of continued pain and Septicaemia. 20. John Thomas REED (William, William, Thomas) was born on 29 Dec 1852 in Camelford, Cornwall, England. He died on 13 Dec 1924 in Yeelana, South Australia. He was buried in Yeelana Cemetery.

John Thomas Reed came to Australia with his parents when he was 3 years old, on the sailing ship " Marion" this ship was wrecked shortly afterwards. His parents were engaged in farming in the Willunga district. When a young man, John Reed took up land near Johnburgh. However after a series of dry years he was forced to leave his wife and young family and go mining at Broken Hill and Western Australia. In 1907 he went to Eyres Peninsula and took up land near Yeelanna, where he was one of the pioneers of the district. He had an uphill fight in clearing the mallee scrub, but he suceeded and in 1924, he had one of the best crops in the district. He died on December 13th 1924 at age 72 years and was buried in the Yeelanna cemetery, by the Methodist Minister the Rev Barret.

19 Mar 2013 Descendants of Thomas REED Page 11 For some time his widow, lived on the farm with her daughter Eva, then later moved to Black Rock and Johnburgh living amongst relations before finally settling at Peterborough where she lived for several years until her death on Jan 25th 1942, age 84 years and was buried in the Orroroo cemetery near her Mother, Phillippa Arthur. The Methodist Minister Rev Redden officiated at the graveside.

John married Grace ARTHUR daughter of John ARTHUR and Phillipa KENT on 12 Aug 1880 in Primitive Methodist Church Orroroo South Australia. Grace was born on 15 Aug 1858 in Callington, South Australia. She died on 25 Jan 1942 in Peterborough, South Australia. She was buried in Orroroo, South Australia. They had the following children:

Eva Reed never married, but looked after widowed mother for many years. After her mothers death Eva lived by herself for several years, then sold her home at Peterborough. Then lived with her widowed sister Mrs Mabel Lang at Yongala. Eva died suddenly ath the age of 85 years and was burried by the Methodist Minister Rev Baker at the Yongala Cemetery.

21. Jane Elizabeth REED (William, William, Thomas) was born about Sep 1854 in Camelford, Cornwall, England. She died on 20 May 1940 in 18 Anglo Avenue, Parkside, South Australia. The cause of death was Varcinoima Vontriculi 4 months Vomiting and Inanitium. She was buried in West Terrace Cemetry.

The following was found on the back of a photo of Jane it is written by my grandfather Andrew "My mother whom as a child with her parnets and grandparents came from Penzance Cornwall in 1856 in the sailing ship "Marion". Departed Plymouth 9 Sept 1856 arrived Pt Adelaide 19th January 1857 (more than three months on the sea). Parents William & Eliza Reed took up farming & named the property Delabole after a quarry in Cornwall.

Jane married (1) Charles MANSFIELD son of Henry MANSFIELD and Sarah Ann MAKEPEACE on 25 May 1873 in Wesley Chapel Delabole near Willunga. Charles was born on 5 Jun 1848 in Sandy Bay Hobart Tasmania. He died on 2 Jun 1881 in Adelaide South Australia. He was buried on 5 Jun 1881 in West Terrace Cemetry.

Birth Cert No 813 Charles Mansfield is also recorded as the father of Andrew Charles Sellstrom/Mansfield. The reason for this was that after Jane asked Sven Sellstrom to leave as he was already married, she went back to using Mansfield and so did Andy.

Left home with his brother Hans and joined a ships crew, the ship being named the Peter Dickssen 13 October 1860. Sven absconded from the ship on 3 March 1861. Sven Sellstrom married Jane Watt 15 August 1864 Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland. Sometime after 1877 he left Scotland and arrived in South Australia where he worked as a Sailmaker he met Jane Mansfield nee Reed and they resided in the village settlement at Gilles Street, Adelaide. Jane and Sven married 28 November 1883 at the minister's residence Hurtle Square Adelaide, in the presence of Hugh Handley, occupation bootmaker residence Nelson Street Adelaide and Amelia Hubbard, occupation dressmaker residence Surflin Street Adelaide. Sometime after the birth of their son Andrew, Jane found out that Sven was already married and sent him packing. His reply was that he had been seperated from his first wife for over 5 years. Jane replied "things are not done like that here" The last she heard from him was a letter he sent from Melbourne offering to send money for Andrew. Sven called himself Sven Laurentine Sellstrom but on his birth certificate he was Sven Laurentius Sellstrom. May have arrived in Port Lincoln. Newpaper cutting "Mrs Thomas Hunt spent her youth, near Willunga and in the earliest years she attended the Sunday School at Delabole Quarries. Undoubtly much of the christian sentiments goodwill and activety for the Church as in her life was the result of the good seed sown in early years. After her marriage and her coming to Myponga there was evident in the interest in the work of God from the begining of her residence in the neighbour. During thirty yearrs that interest continued and was apparent in the Myponga Church and the Circuit, with which it connected our sister attended Stone Laying celebrations at Myponga and contributed towards the building. Besides contributing and working for the welfare of the church, she was latterly amember of the Church, she having joined during the early patern of the Rev E A Petherick. She was ever so bright and cheerful,always ready to say the kind word to be helpful and sympathetic to those who were in need. her illness there the result of a seizure lasted for several weeks during which time was increasing weakness but apparently little or no painl feature which cannot but be conobing to the friends.

Albert & Tony Reed had a farm at Hundred of Brooker on the West Coast and later moved to a dairy farm at Bowral NSW. They then moved again to South Australia on a dairy farm at Johnburgh after several years, they moved again to Orroroo in retirement and then to Adelaide. Albert Reed still lived in his own home, with his married daughter Thelma and her husband, who looked after him until his death in 1966 at age 85 years.

Mabel Reed was born at Johnburgh and was educated at the Johnburgh School. After her marriage to Hubert Lang they first settled at Yongala on the "Way Side Farm" and remained there most of their married life. They had a family of three sons Ross, Harley and Wallie. When 2nd World War broke out, Harley and Wallie enlisted in the AIF and went overseas. Harley died in the Middle East, Gaza. When the war ended Wallie returned to Yongala and continued farming, Ross lives at "Hill Grange Station" Nackara.

When the first World War broke out in 1914 Walter Reed enlisted and was the 730th man to enlist in the 3rd Light Horse, and they left for Gallapolli, and he was wounded in some part of the War and was in hospital when the war ended in 1918. Walter didn't arrive home to Australia until 1919, till things sttled down in the Middle East. He met Ellen Elizabeth Stevenson and married her in 1920. After their marriage Walter and Nellie, first settled at Port Lincoln, then later moved to Tooligie Hill, and Peachand district and took up land and was farming then for several years. There were three sons of this marriage. After the death of his wife Walter Reed and his son Alton lived together on the

Walter married Ellen Elizabeth STEVENSON "Nellie" daughter of Henry STEVENSON and Mary on 25 Sep 1920 in Kent Town Methodist Manse Norwood South Australia. Ellen was born on 4 Aug 1894 in Birmingham England. She died on 29 Oct 1948 in Port Lincoln Hospital. She was buried in Port Lincoln Cemetery.

Ellen was born in Birmingham England, the second daughter of Henry and Mary Stevenson. She was educated at the Rea Street Council School and went to work at Birmingham Food Supply in July ,1906. Ellen came to Australia in 1911/1912, worked at Millswood, returned to England 1915- 1916, worked at Drew Lane Muntions till Nov 1918, returned to Australia.

68. Francis Lancelot REED (John Thomas, William, William, Thomas) was born on 12 Mar 1895 in Wallaway SA. He died on 16 Aug 1963 in Cummins Hospital. He was buried in Cummins Cemetery.

In 1912 Francis came to work on his father's farm near Yeelann and worked there for several years. after his marriage to Sylvia they moved to Cummins and Frank worked in the Cummins bakery for several years, then they moved back to Yeelanna dn Hundred Brooker districts farming. Then in the 1930s they returned to Cummins where Frank worked on the SA Railways, L Rough Engineering Works and lastly at M S McLeods Ltd until his sudden death. There are three sons Bob, Jack (twins) & Bill and three daughters Annie, Marjorie and Grace. When the 2nd World War broke out, the three boys enlisted in the 2nd AIF and went overseas on active service. When they were in the Middle East Bob & Bill were wounded through the war and in hospital. When the boys were sent to Tarakan in the islands Jack was burnt with acid and was in hospital. When the war ended the boys all came home to Cummins and lived for several years, Bill moved to Port Lincolnto live and then moved again to live in Adelaide and worked for the Adelaide Gas Co. and Jack lived at Kapunda and worked at the Foundry and Bob lived in Cummins and worked for the Council.

Richard was the third child of Robert and Elizabeth (nee Savage). He was a great worker for sport and his achievements throughout his life are set out in the following newpaper report taken from a scrapbook owned by the late Doris Gilbert: "After a long illness, Mr. Richard Edward (Dick) Correll, who was well known and respected in Adelaide sporting circles, died at his home, Anglo Avenue, Parkside on Tuesday. He was born at Woodside on 17th October, 1867, and was the son of Mr. Robert Correll, one of the founders of the Onkaparinga Racing Club. He was educated at Pulteney Grammar School, and for thirty-three years was associated with Harris, Scarfe Limited and later with the Government Produce Department. In his younger days, Mr. Correll was a good footballer. He played with Port Adelaide from 1890 to 1898 and then joined Norwood Club, and also served on the committee. He did not allow his interest in football to flag, and acted as secretary of the Veteran Footballers' Association. He was an enthusiastic worker on the the committee of the Charity Carnival. He was the first secretary of the Hardware Assistants' Athletic Association. Cricket also attracted his attention, and he won a trophy for the best bowling average in the Lyric Club for a season. Mr. Correll was well known in racing circles, being a familiar figure at the Victoria Park race tracks. For the past ten years he reported

His interest in the Onkaparinga Club was also great, and since 1920 he acted as clerk of scales for the coming meeting. More than one hundred of the old comrades on the football field and sporting friends of the late Mr. Correll were present on Sunday afternoon at the Mitcham Church of England cemetery where Mr. J. H. Gosse (President of the Norwood Football Club) unveiled a memorial headstone placed over his grave through the efforts of the Veterans' Football Association". Master Lawrence Mansfield, a boy of sixteen, hearing the child's cries, jumped in, but being heavily handicapped with his clothes and boots, and having some distance to swim, he was nearly exhausted by the time he reached it. Notwithstanding the difficulty he had in keeping himself afloat he struggled bravely to save the child. By the time help had arrived, they had given over struggling and were sinking. Captain Henderson, of the James Comrie, hearing the cry. 'Child overboard,' lost no time in having a boat, lowered, and reached the spot in time to save the two boys. Too much praise cannot be given to Master Mansfield for his heroic conduct, and also to Captain Henderson and his crew for the smart manner in which they got the boat out.”

Clarrie owned a fruit block at Winkie SA. At about 4 years of age whilst on a picnic Clarrie fell in the river out of a boat and was saved from drowning by his brother Lock Mansfield. Clarrie said that his long curls saved his life as he was dragged up by his hair and was pronounced dead by the local policeman but his mother resucitated him and the family story goes that the next time someone drowned the local police officer locked up the body as he was not going to be proved wrong twice. Captain Clarence Rumball received a Military Cross. 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He made several reconnaissances of unknown ground under heavy fire, and by his quick appreciation of the situation and prompt action greatly assisted in the success of the operations.' The raid on Gaba Tepe, 4 May 1915. "A small support party under Lieutenant Rumball, of the 10th Battalion, moved along the beach before dawn to cut the Turkish wire, in hope that Leane's party wold be able to return to the Allied lines by this route." Obituary "The death of Mrs Violet E R Stevens wife of Robert Oliver Stevens of Strathalbyn, occured in Adelaide on Sunday last. The late Mrs Stevens who was only 52 years old, had been ailing, for little time, and her removal to a city hospital was advised but to no avail. The Funderal took place at Strathalbyn on Tuesday. Besides her husband two sons, Lesile and Harold survive.

The Murray Clifton Reed collection of slate working tools Willunga Courthouse Museum. Cliff Reed began as an apprentice in 1919 at age 15. He was a third generation Willunga quarryman whose family were living in Willunga by 1863: the three-legged stool had been used by his father and grandfather before him. Cliff was associated with a number of prominent buildings around Adelaide, in particular the Royal Adelaide Hospital, for which he made 25,000 shingles in 1933.
