Good News Lutheran Church | Mount Horeb, Wisconsin Fifth Sunday after Pentecost | July 5, 2020 1217 Springdale Street | GoodNewsLC.org | 608-437-4646 Pastor Jonathan Bauer | [email protected] | 608-772-7500 Student Assistant Sam Schulz | [email protected] | 608-963-5602 Welcome and thank you for joining us for worship today! We are honored that you are with us. We pray that the word of God you hear will strengthen your faith and increase your love for the Lord! If you are a guest today, know that we are thankful you have joined us and hope that you will join us again soon. The gospel (or good news) is not just information about what Jesus did to save sinners. It is also the power God uses to work faith in our hearts and transform our lives. Therefore, Lutheran worship places the gospel in central focus in an order of service called the liturgy. In the message and meal (Holy Communion), in specially selected Scripture readings, and in carefully crafted songs, prayers, and creeds, the liturgy proclaims the good news about Jesus from start to finish. Lutheran worship is also designed to include the participation of the entire assembly (including children). For your ease and convenience, the order of service is printed out in the following pages. If a song is not found in this service folder, it can be found in the red hymnal located on the chair in front of you. Parts marked are spoken or sung by the minister, and parts marked and printed in bold are spoken or sung by the congregation. • If you are in need of restrooms, there are two in the back of the sanctuary, one on either side of the kitchen. • If your child needs a moment to be quieted, a children’s room is available on the far right side of the sanctuary. • Hand sanitizer and disposable masks are available in the entryway. • Guidelines for seating are posted in the entryway and on the projection screen. 2 May 31: Unity better than uniqueness June 7: Cooperation better than credit June 14: Forgiveness better than outrage June 21: Direction better than determination June 28: Confession better than catering July 5: Bond better than blood Our recent, temporary isolation is a wonderful reminder that isolation was never Jesus’ intention for his people. Rather than being stranded as individual Christians, Christ has woven his people into the beautiful, ornamented fabric that is his Church. As members of that Church, we are far better together than we are alone. This week we see how being joined to Jesus may mean being separated from things that are near and dear to our hearts. When Jesus is our source of righteousness, we naturally cast aside any competing source. Far from this meaning that following Jesus is a net loss, however, Jesus points us to all that we gain. Only he can deliver the righteousness we seek and the reward that comes with it. God of all power and might, you are the giver of all that is good. Help us love you with all our heart, strengthen us in true faith, provide us with all we need, and keep us safe in your care; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Hasten to save me, O God. O Lord, come quickly to help me. Praise be to God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: let us worship him. 5 6 God of all power and might, you are the giver of all that is good. Help us love you with all our heart, strengthen us in true faith, provide us with all we need, and keep us safe in your care; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 7 The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? Hear my voice when I call, O Lord; be merciful to me and answer me. Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, O God my Savior. I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands. They were inscribed on both sides, front and back. 16 The tablets were the work of God; the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets. 17 When Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, “There is the sound of war in the camp.” 18 Moses replied: 8 “It is not the sound of victory, it is not the sound of defeat; it is the sound of singing that I hear.” 19 When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain. 20 And he took the calf the people had made and burned it in the fire; then he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it. 21 He said to Aaron, “What did these people do to you, that you led them into such great sin?” 22 “Do not be angry, my lord,” Aaron answered. “You know how prone these people are to evil. 23 They said to me, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.’ 24 So I told them, ‘Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.’ Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!” 25 Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock to their enemies. 26 So he stood at the entrance to the camp and said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me.” And all the Levites rallied to him. 27 Then he said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.’” 28 The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died. 29 Then Moses said, “You have been set apart to the Lord today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day.” The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! 9 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn “‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— 36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’ 37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. 10 40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to you, O Christ! 11 In the morning, O Lord, we call to you. Be merciful to us and hear our prayer. Father, we thank you that you have freed us from our captivity to sin, death, and Satan, and that we now belong to Christ. Help us always to serve you in the new life of the Spirit. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Father, we thank you for all you do to provide us with our daily bread. Be with all who work to grow the fruits of the earth that you have given us for food.
