Parent and Child

2. Baby Basics

Baby Basics exists to provide essential equipment, clothing and toiletries free of charge to families who are unable to provide for themselves.

Requests must come from a professional who works alongside the family and not directly from the individual in need. If you identify a family who is in need please follow this process: • Ask them if they would like to receive items from Baby Basics • Identify specifically what items are needed • Email or call your local Baby Basics team to make the referral

You will be asked for the following information: • You: Name, agency and your contact details • Your Client: Name, due date of baby, gender (if known) and items needed • Any other information you think is important for us to know • The team will be able to let you know if the items needed are available and will give you an indication of how long it will take to prepare • You will be notified when the items are ready for collection • Make arrangements with the Baby Basics team about collecting the items. Items must be delivered to the client by the referrer or other professional • Baby Basics is unable to offer a delivery service.

Our aim, where possible, is to have items ready to be collected one month before the baby is due, giving the family time to sort through the items given and feel confident that they have what is needed. It really helps us to have referrals in as early as possible. One of the core items that we put together is a Starter Pack – a Moses basket packed with new-born clothing, bedding, a towel suitable for a new-born, nappies and other toiletries for both mum and baby. Please note that although the Moses baskets themselves are second hand we always replace the mattresses with brand new ones.

6. Norfolk Area Send Strategy

Feedback on Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Strategy

Norfolk County Council are setting out their plans for the next 3 years to acknowledge the achievements and successes to date but importantly to be honest about the many challenges that they face to improve SEND provision across the county.

Overview We have been working over the past year with our parent/carer groups, health service, education providers and teams across Norfolk County Council to put together an Area SEND Strategy.

The draft Area SEND Strategy we have put together outlines our visions and plans for SEND over the next three years. We now want you to give us your feedback on the priorities and themes that have been identified. Once we have your feedback we will take your comments on board before publishing the Area SEND Strategy on the Local Offer in September. We will review our strategy regularly and make sure it changes and adapts to the on-going feedback we receive, including any national changes. The actions outlined in the Strategy will help us to continue our ambition over the next three years to support inclusion, improve services and change lives ……together.

Please read our draft Strategy and then click on the 'online feedback' link to gives us your views.

13. Adult Mental Health Services

Transforming Adult Mental Health Services in Norfolk and Waveney

Since mid-2018 The Norfolk and Waveney Health and Care Partnership have been working with partners, service users, carers, professionals and the voluntary sector to review the services and support that is available across Norfolk and Waveney for adults with mental health issues. The final version of the Norfolk and Waveney Adult Mental Health Strategy is available here.

This has now given us a clear steer on the areas we most need to focus on and the improvements we need to make. It has also shone a light on those services which are working well, providing valuable insight into how services could be delivered in the future. An update on our progress since producing the strategy is available to read here.

14. Five Year Plan for Health & Care

Every day we make choices that affect our own health and wellbeing, and many of us spend time caring for other people too - our partners, children, parents and friends.

As a result, we all have lots of experiences of caring for others, and being cared for.

We are working together to develop a five year plan for health and care in Norfolk and Waveney. We need you to turn all your experiences into good ideas about how we can improve the health and wellbeing of people living locally.

Join our online conversation to share your ideas about how we can make Norfolk and Waveney a healthier place to live, and to see what other people are saying too.

Your ideas might just save a life, so get involved and tell us what you want to see in our five-year plan for health and care. Jump back to start

15. Rural Stress & Depression Help

YANA: Help for those in farming who may be affected by stress and depression.

Farming is usually a good way of life, but it is a demanding and stressful occupation. So, it’s not surprising that many people involved with agriculture can feel isolated, depressed or unable to cope as well as normal. 1 in 5 people in the UK will experience a problem with depression so it is important to know that you, or the person you are concerned about, are not alone. Those who work in agriculture are often reluctant to seek support for depression, stress or anxiety. However, talking about your problems and seeking appropriate help can make it easier to cope and improve your quality of life.

Remember that depression is an illness not a weakness.

If you are involved with agriculture or farming in any way and are feeling low or if you are worried about a member of your family, a colleague or a friend, YANA can help. Remember, you don’t have to struggle by yourself - good help is available. If you are very seriously worried about the mental state of someone go to our Concerned about someone page NOW. Don’t hesitate to take action.

YANA can offer specific help for those involved in any way with farming or agriculture in Norfolk, Suffolk and Worcestershire - but wherever you live and farm you might find these pages useful.

YANA: Confidential support to those in the farming community: You can talk to someone at YANA An answer service is available out of hours or, if you prefer, email us - we are here to help. Depression is an illness – NOT a weakness

16. Central Norfolk Bereavement Care

Norwich and Central Norfolk

What is Norwich Cruse? Cruse Bereavement Care Norwich is part of a national charity which supports the bereaved. It is an independent organisation of committed people who care about and understand the needs associated with bereavement. Cruse is often the only place people have to turn to when someone has died.

Cruse Bereavement Care offers sympathetic, compassionate and confidential support by selected, highly trained volunteers. After a death we are here to talk to you and pass on useful information which may be of help. We can offer one to one support to those who still need help further down the line. However long ago the bereavement, we may be able to help.

Norwich Cruse offers: • One to one support • A Telephone Enquiry Line to find out about our services and other bereavement support available to people in Norfolk. Messages are checked regularly, and we will call you back as soon as we can. • Advice and helpful leaflets and information. • Monday Morning Group; a social support/coffee group aimed at older people who have been bereaved in the past. Please ring the Cruse office before going along for a first time. • Training and outreach work for other individuals/organisations who deal with bereaved people.

What is Cruse One to One Support? Cruse offers an opportunity to talk about anything that is related to a bereavement. Your volunteer is not there to offer you advice, nor to make judgements about you or what you say. He or she is there to listen and will try to understand your feelings and situation.

How do I get in touch? Phone us on 01603 219977 and you can speak to someone on our enquiry line who will take your details. If there is no one there when you call you can leave a message and we will phone you back as soon as possible – we do check messages regularly. Or you can email us at: [email protected]. https://www.cruse.org.uk/get-help/local-services/eastern-england/norwich-and-central- norfolk

Domestic Abuse and Victim Support

19. Recommissioning Victim Care Service

Organisations which can help victims of crime cope and recover from what they have experienced are being offered the opportunity to provide a victim care service for Norfolk and Suffolk.

From 10 July, Norfolk PCC Lorne Green and Suffolk PCC Tim Passmore are encouraging bids to provide a victim assessment, support and referral service across both counties. Since 2015, Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) have been responsible for commissioning support services for victims of crime in their force

For the last four years, victims of crime in Norfolk have been benefitting from PCC- commissioned support services designed to assess their needs and ensure they have access to support to cope and recover from the impact of the crime. The current service model – the Norfolk and Suffolk Victim Care service – was launched by PCC Lorne Green in April 2018, with the existing contract is due to end on 31 March 2020.

The new £3.15 million five-year contract, which will be managed by the Norfolk and Suffolk PCC offices, will secure a service available to all victims of crime, with enhanced support on offer for those who are vulnerable, affected by serious crime or persistently targeted. It will also provide referrals to specialist support services as appropriate.

While the service will respect a victim’s choice whether or not to report the crime, it will ensure the victim is aware of their right to report and how to do so, and support victims through the criminal justice system. PCC Lorne Green said: “Supporting victims and reducing vulnerability is one of my key priorities as Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner. “We owe it to victims of crime to ensure the support they need is available. If your organisation can help us in delivering that vital support, we’d like to hear from you.”

Who can apply and how? Organisations that can demonstrate they meet the necessary criteria and are able to deliver a service across Norfolk and Suffolk are eligible to apply. Partnership bids will be accepted; however, one partner must take the lead and administer the contract/funds on behalf of the partnership. Full details are available on the Bluelight EU Supply Portal at https://uk.eu-supply.com. All correspondence, including application and clarification questions will be managed through the Portal. The deadline for applications is Thursday 15 August 2019

21. Free Trees

The Woodland Trust want to make sure that everybody in the UK has the chance to plant a tree. So, we’re giving away hundreds of thousands of trees to schools and communities

Our online application form for March 2020 delivery will reopen on 27 August 2019. If you cannot wait until then, tree packs can be purchased in our shop all year round.

Who can apply? • Schools across the UK, plus nurseries, colleges, universities and outdoor learning centres • All kinds of different groups such as resident associations, sports clubs, parish councils, scouts, guides and many more. You don’t need to belong to an official organisation. You could even set up a group for the purpose of planting, but you must be not-for-profit. The most important thing is that your group is willing to take on the planning, planting and care of the saplings. What are the eligibility criteria? If you’re applying as a school your trees should be planted on either the school grounds, land the school has arranged regular access to or in an area that is publicly accessible. If you’re applying as a community group, the land needs to be accessible to the public. You should also make sure your local community are aware of your plans to plant and are happy for you to go ahead. The community involvement needs to be more than just being in sight of a public footpath or an annual open day. We are unlikely to award trees which will be planted on private land such as large gardens or paddocks, unless there is genuine public access.

Before you start you’ll need to: • Know the six digit grid reference for the land you wish to plant using the grid reference finder • Have permission from the legal landowner • Read through our short list of FAQs. They are packed full of important and useful information which will help your application. http://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/plant-trees/free-trees/

29. Norfolk Assistance Scheme

Norfolk residents can now turn to the new and improved Norfolk Assistance Scheme (NAS) in times of crisis.

Launching on 1 July 2019, the new scheme provides essential holistic support throughout the application process and enables more Norfolk people to access the scheme through reused and recycled awards.

If you apply for help and are successful, you’ll also receive a voucher to use with one of our partners to get essential household items.

Our partners are local charities focused on helping Norfolk people, delivering goods across the whole of the county and providing high-quality, pre-owned items. Awards can also be made in crisis situations for small amounts of cash or fuel.

How the scheme works You must be a Norfolk resident aged 16 or over to apply for the scheme and you’ll be asked a set of questions to check if you’re eligible for an award. You may be eligible if you: • Receive an income-related benefit • Have dependent children • Have a disability or mental health problem • Are fleeing domestic violence • Need help to remain in the community • Are part of a planned resettlement scheme You’ll be assessed to discover whether an award is due, how much you’ll get and what form it will take. If you’re not eligible, you’ll be directed to alternative sources of local help. See our Norfolk Assistance Scheme policy for more details about the scheme.

How to apply You can apply online for the Norfolk Assistance Scheme and we’ve provided some guidance to help you fill out the form. Apply for the scheme online If you apply online and haven't been contacted after 10 days, contact your support worker or the NAS team on 01603 223392 (Option 5). To apply for the scheme by telephone, call 01603 223392 (Option 5). You can also make an assisted application through a network of approved partners. 30. Opportunities for Care leavers

The Rees Foundation is a registered Charity (1154019) founded by Jan Rees OBE in October 2013. The idea for the Rees Foundation came about many years ago when Jan Rees OBE and Rupert Bertie started talking about their ambitions to set up a charity for care leavers. Following over two years of research, discussions and planning the Charity was launched and has continued to evolve and develop.

The Rees Foundation’s philosophy is a strengths-based model championing services to, with and for care leavers and care experienced people and communities. Our aspirations and ambitions are high to achieve the best possible outcomes for care leavers and care experienced people and communities.

Rise Up is designed to equip young people with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to make positive change happen in their communities. We’re interested in helping individuals who are passionate about Human Rights issues; anything from housing rights, to refugee rights, to LGBTI rights and many many more.

Our aim is to empower and educate young people to become effective campaigners on the issues that matter most to them. So that together, we can Rise Up.

We will be looking for 16-24-year olds to take part and are encouraging applications from marginalised groups, without existing access to resources, funding or training. Starting September 2019, it will consist of four weekends over the course of a year at our London headquarters (expenses will be covered).

The applications are now open, it is a short application which can be completed via video or writing and we welcome applications in pairs! We hope that this will help applicants feel supported at point of application and try to ensure as few barriers to entry as possible.

With this in mind, we are heavily relying on people and organisations to actively encourage young people they know to apply. It would be fantastic to reach as far and wide as we can!

Please share this within your networks and beyond and do get in touch should you need any further information.” http://www.reesfoundation.org/201819-plan

Training for Professionals

35. Solihull Approach Foundation Training

Two Day Solihull Approach Foundation Training

The Solihull Approach is a widely used approach to working with parents, children and young people. We are delighted to be able to offer this training to our partner agencies so that we can all share similar language and ethos when working together with our Norfolk families.

The approach brings together psychodynamic theory and child development to provide the professional with a framework for their conversations and work with parents, children and young people. Use of the approach takes the emphasis away from the behaviour or child as the problem and reframes the work within the parent/child relationship.

There is NO COST for people to attend this training however it is essential that your organisation purchase at least one Solihull resource pack which supports the two-day training and helps embed the approach into practice afterwards. Depending on your role and the age of the children you work with; The first five years resource pack is £77, and the school years resource pack is £76. Your organisation can purchase these manuals by clicking on this link http://solihullapproachparenting.com/order/#resource_packs

Unfortunately, we are not able to offer this training to anyone who has previously attended the two-day training course. Two-day trainings will be available throughout the year, booking is essential. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis and fill up very quickly,

From September 2020, all primary age children will learn relationships education and health education, and all secondary age children will learn relationships & sex education (RSE) and health education. These guides are to help parents know more about these subjects and are related to the guidance Relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education.

They have also produced some guides that schools can issue to parents https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/relationships-sex-and-health-education- guides-for-schools

43. Data Analysis in Childrens Care

Data visualisation in children's social care (Coram) While local authorities are producing some good quality analysis about children's social care from the vast amount of data that is collected, data visualisation could help make predictions about the future, particularly in smaller local authorities. This is according to new Nuffield- funded research published by Coram. A key insight from the research was that people tend to engage with and better understand data portrayed as a map. Dynamic maps that show movement present a great deal of information in a more accessible and impactful form and were found to be an effective way to gain a clear picture of children’s journeys through the social care system.

44. Serious Case Review

NSCB Have published the report for the Serious Case Review which concerns two babies from two different families both of whom died when they were less than two months old whilst sleeping with parents who were under the influence of alcohol and other drugs. The circumstances leading up to the deaths of the babies have been considered separately and individually nut one Serious Case Review Panel and one lead Reviewer has undertaken this work so that common themes can be identified, and one set of recommendations produced.

For full details of the report please see https://www.norfolklscb.org/people-working-with-children/serious-case-reviews/

53. Caring Dads Programme

Caring Dads Programme: information for Referrers

The Caring Dads Programme is an intervention for fathers whose parenting is abusive or neglectful. It is designed to help them replace parent-centered with child-centered parenting strategies. Caring Dads is unique because it sits at the intersection of perpetrator and parenting programmes. It addresses the abusive behaviour of men and teaches them strategies for modifying that behaviour. And it teaches men the skills necessary to build positive and respectful relationships both with their children and with their children’s mothers, whether or not they are still a couple.

Why we need this programme:  The focus of almost all of child protection work continues to be the mother, even when she is the victim of domestic abuse.  Fathers, especially those who are non-resident, are too often not engaged by professionals as a resource for the child.  There is no programme in Norfolk for abusive or neglectful fathers outside of the criminal justice system.

The Programme:  Caring Dads is an18 week course for up to 12 fathers. It meets one evening a week for two hours and includes a mix of group work and 1-2-1 sessions.  The Programme is suitable for fathers, step-fathers or other male carers of children of all ages. The men must have regular contact with at least one of their children. The Programme is not suitable for sex offenders.  Caring Dads is a Coordinated Case Management Programme. Referrers are a vital part of its success and are required to work with the men they refer for the duration of the Programme. The involvement of the mothers of the men’s children is equally important. We stress the importance of the mothers’ involvement with Leeway throughout the Programme. Referrers will receive weekly updates on the group and will be kept informed of any concerns the facilitators may have about the clients they have referred. Referrers are expected to tell the Programme about any changes in the family’s situation.

When and Where: The next Caring Dads Programme will run for 18 weeks between Tuesday, September 10, 2019 and January 14, 2020. (There will be no meeting on December 24 or December 31.) It will meet from 18.30 to 20.30 at The Men’s Shed, 43-51 Pitt St, Norwich NR3 1DE.

Please send all referrals to [email protected] NO LATER THAN TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3. For further information, please contact Mark Bond-Webster, Coordinator, Caring Dads, Norfolk, on 07817 570 471 or by email at [email protected] Jump back to start
