  • Western Cape Jazz Legends
Western Cape Jazz Legends Foreword The Western Cape Jazz legends which unveiled on 17 March 2011 pays homage to the rich jazz heritage of the Western Cape. The publishing of the Western Cape Jazz Legends Booklet gives a wider audience access to an appreciation of the contribution of these musicians who often plied their trade under the most difficult circumstances and with very little material reward. The short biographies are informed by existing literature and interviews conducted with family members. The list is by no means comprehensive but it does indicate our resolve to give homage, to acknowledge, to preserve and to promote the rich musical heritage of the Western Cape. Documenting our musical history not only ensures that the impact of the role of these legends on the musical landscape of the Western Cape is captured for posterity, but also that their stories serve as a source of inspiration to aspiring musicians. This booklet represents an important step towards the building of a socially inclusive Western Cape. These Jazz Legends united us around our common love for music and the unique sounds of Cape Town Jazz. Let’s celebrate their achievement and resolve that we will continue to build on this initiative to acknowledge our musicians who created musical melodies which filled us with joy, often leaving us in awe of their amazing talent and with a deep sense of self-worth and cultural warmth. Dr IH Meyer Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Western cape Government. Western Cape Jazz Legends 1 2 Western Cape Jazz Legends IntroductIon The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has embedded in its vision, “… A socially cohesive and creative Western Cape.” The arts and culture component of the department has embraced this vision and the Western Cape Jazz Legends project is reflective thereof.

  • (Title of the Thesis)*
1 A 'new experiment in local government' The Local Health Commission: A Study of Public Health and Local Governance in Black Urban Areas in Natal, South Africa, 1930 - 1959 by Mary Susan Caesar A thesis submitted to the Department of History In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (May, 2015) Copyright ©Mary S. Caesar, 2015 1 NHSC interview with the LHC, 9 August 1943, LHC Minutes, Vol. 1, 1 November 1941-31 March 1943 i Abstract The Local Health Commission (LHC) was established in 1940. Its significance lies in the fact that it adopted a public health-based approach to local governance and that it delivered health and welfare services to residents of the neglected black and multi-racial urban areas. Even though its mandate was the antithesis of the goals of urban apartheid, the LHC expanded its scope after the National Party came into power in 1948. This dissertation is firstly, an institutional history of the LHC. Secondly, it examines the ways in which black urban residents practiced in municipal institutions by demanding that the LHC not only fulfill its mandate but, that it also amend its programs in order to meet their needs. A third and final theme of this dissertation is the role of Advisory Boards in addressing the public health crises specifically, ways in which the ABs held the LHC accountable. By exploring the LHC through these three themes, this dissertation addressed larger historical questions: firstly, the role of white liberal bureaucrats in the development of public health and urban governance in South Africa and secondly, the nature of black people’s participation in state institutions before 1994.

  • Streets, Skollies and Coons in District Six
Streets, skollies and Coons in District Six On narratives and identity related toan area of forced removal in Cape Town, South Africa Jonas Ursin‑Holm Lea Dissertation for the Cand.polit degree University of Oslo Department of Social Anthropology March 2007 ii Abstract In post‑apartheid South Africa there has been an ongoing process of renegotiating history since the abolishment of the white minority rule. South Africans are coming to terms with who they were, are and are becoming. As a part of the nation‑building project the Truth and Reconciliation Commission facilitated the narration of the gross violations of apartheid. Hence, former silenced voices could present their versions of the past. Critics, however, have called for a more positive shared history for the rainbow nation to build on. In this thesis I focus on another set of memories ‑ the memories of District Six. The multicultural urban area of inner city Cape Town was destroyed during apartheid and the residents were forcibly removed as a result of the Group Areas Act of 1966. Today the residents have the possibility to return following the land restitution process, and District Six has come to national fame as a symbol of hope. I look into the narratives of the former residents as they are presented on various arenas. In narrating their lives people are positioning themselves in history and in the same time negotiating identity. My focal point of study has been the District Six Museum, where the different representations of the past, as told by the former residents, have been organized to make up a pattern of “district sixness”.
